Yay.. only 2 hours to go to my favorite time of the year.. I really think this'll be the year a 16 seed scares a 1 (st joe's perhaps?)

any late thoughts?

I really think FAMU will scare Kentucky.

St. Joe's is not as weak as you think they are.

I think Vermont will give UConn a game... looking back at all the major tourney upsets, they usually happen when a small-time team has a big-time scorer who steps up in the NCAA's and totally overwhelms the opponent. Taylor Coppenrath is such a scorer.

T-minus 2 hours and 7 minutes...

Time for me to get my ass down to Dallas and the UTEP hangout to watch the Miners game and have a couple of half-yards of beer...

This is going to be a great day... :)

I love just sitting here and watching 10 hours of basketball a day for the first weekend! It's like a religious experience. Unfortunately, this year it's tainted as I have a project due tomorrow so I'll be working the whole time I'm watching. Or at least most of the time :(

Taylor Coppenrath is such a scorer.

When he's not hurt. I'm not positive but I don't think he's played that much this season. Atleast I know he missed one or both games against us. But if he is playing...UConn better watch out.

LOL!! I am so pumped up I filled out 7 brackets. Yes indeedeedoodee!

Dangerous teams to lookout for today.

Manhattan
UTEP
Dayton
Arizona (these guys if they play as well as their potential....LOOKOUT!)

I can see Liberty beating St. Joe's....

It is time to dance boys!!

Agreed, this is by far my favorite sports time of the year. Just watching and waiting to see who the Cinderella teams are going to be this year (UIC) can make you a fan of the game.

albionmoonlight
03-18-2004, 11:12 AM
FAMU, based on what I saw in the play-in game, lives and dies with hustle and the 3. That means that, on their luckiest day, they can beat any team in the country. Of course, if this is any of the other 364 days of the year, then it's Kentucky in a walkover.

My favorite part of the Madness? How a gym full of people (most there to see some team who is not playing in the 15-2 game or the 16-1 game) will get a crazy rooting interest for some small school of which they have never heard if that school happens to be within 5 points when there is less than 5 minutes to go.

Also--does Duke ever have a close first round game? They always seem to be able to win by 30 as a 1 seed.

Ragone
03-18-2004, 11:24 AM
man look at all 15 people that showed up in raleigh for florida manhatten..

this reminds me to make my plea i make every year for the ncaa to put up a open court package to watch whatever game i want at home.. instead of being stuck with local coverage or going to some crappy ass bar

Manhattan leading by 7 at the half, so you're looking pretty good there. I had Manhattan, UTEP & Dayton making it out of the first round.

Arizona? This team has no heart, and even less of a bench. They'll be done by the end of the day.

St Joe's will have accomplished something if they make it out of the first weekend. I agree with Billy Packer. This team should have never been a #1 seed after getting blown out by Xavier.

Yeah, not good. Maryland is basically turning them into a jump-shooting team on the offensive end and is taking it to the hole on them on the defensive end and drawing fouls.

They might have been better than they were given credit for, but I don't think anybody had been giving them credit. ;)

Only team out of C-USA that I have going very far is Memphis. Bob Huggins will find a way to lose this weekend, maybe even today against a dangerous ETSU squad and nobody else just screams at me as being a Sweet 16 team.

It amazes me how some teams cannot manage the game in the last minute. UTEP made a hell of an effort, but really did not maximize their chances.

Maryland is a poor free throw shooting team (although they were making them at the end), so why not foul, go for 2, repeat. The way they played it, they only gave themselves 2 chances, when they could easily given themselves 4 chances. :(

Ragone
03-18-2004, 02:00 PM
yea, that was poor end game coaching by Utep.. who clearly didn't even expect to be in that situation in the end game..

Also laziness on the defensive end hurt utep.. alot of silly fouls that could have been avoided by proper movement and footwork..

I really do think they fumbled a good chance, particularly wasting 22 seconds on that last Maryland possession when it was obvious as heck they needed to foul (the possession started with 35.8 on the clock). They should have fouled in the backcourt for sure.

You know, the sick sadistic side of me hopes St Joes runs the table in that region because very few "knowledgable" sports fans have them that far, trying to look smart and guess where they will get knocked off. It's almost like cheering for the underdog.

They can't be too knowledgable if they don't consider St. Joe's a favorite because they are playing essentially "home" games the first two weekends. That said, I think I picked them to get knocked off in the sweet sixteen in one of my brackets. Seeing that in my office bracket, I picked them to advance to the final four, I guess that it's the FOFC bracket.

For as close as all of the games have been, the only game where I really felt the underdog had a legit shot of winning was UTEP (not including 8-9 games). Sure, Manhattan pulled the upset, but it was the worst kept secret all week. It was the pick that even the conservative bracket makers had. In the second half, BYU was in it, but not really. You knew Syracuse could just bang it underneath on them once they got in all the foul trouble. VCU kept Wake close, but it just didn't seem like they were ever going to win. Texas-Princeton was a 10 point game most of the second half. Even among the 8-9s, that Charlotte game was close for them but Texas Tech was always in control. The underdogs just never felt like they were in it. Most years, you can feel when that higher seed is in trouble, and only the Maryland game smacked of that feel.

61% of America picked Florida to win. America picked 2 upsets: Southern Illinois and Western Michigan.

61% of America picked Florida to win. America picked 2 upsets: Southern Illinois and Western Michigan. Go read all the regional reviews by ESPN, CNNSI, CBS, TSN, and any other outlet of so-called experts (I say that just because the NCAA tourney is so hard to pick). You have to pick a 12 over a 5 and a few other upsets. You know that by the end of the weekend, there will have been some upsets: picking those is the challenge. If you just fill out your brackets with all the top seeds, why do you even bother playing in pools. You won't win and you won't even have fun.

Remember. ESPN poll. Overwhelmining masses of stupid people. Even 40% of them picked that 12 over a 5.

I feel stupid in that I knew Florida was headed home early . I just thought that Manhattan was still not good enough to take them.
