I was wondering about how the salaries were initially assigned to players that are drafted. I knew that there was some kind of slotting system but I decided to see what kind of variety was included and if it took the player picked into account.
I had the 8th pick in the draft. After much deliberation I took rookie punter Desmond Parker. He is ranked as a 0/0 and the only skill he has that isn't at 0 is kick holding and he is considered 100% developed. Every team needs a kick holder so I grabbed him.
His agent, Shawn Finch, who is a very stubborn negotiator ( 94 ) managed to ink a 6 yr $77.1 million dollar deal.
He gets 8.4m this season alone and his SB is 21.6 million. I guess the player taken doesn't play into it much.
It's kinda funny because a couple of weeks ago I'd tried to run an empty cupboard but the trouble was, if I tried to release everybody in yr one I couldn't field a team literally in season 2 due to dead cap space. I tried more than once. There is no expansion team to play so I can't start that way and I thought, hey if I allocaton draft only scrubs maybe I can cut them all and still field a team. That's why I tried this experiment and apparantly it won't work either.
I know some people are running empty cupboards but I can't see how? Maybe I've just been real unlucky??
Started over same game and with the 8th pick took K Kevin Sanderson. He's a 7/11 but represented by Melvin Gomez, an 8 negotiator. I got a similar but slightly smaller deal. 5 yr roughly 57.5 mil deal.
Started yet again and took 7 yr vet RCB Richard McNew. He's also represented by Melvin Gomez ( 8). He's the highest ranked corner at 85/85. Identical deal that Gomez got Sanderson.
It's a small test but it looks like the player's skills may well have zero influence on the initial contract. It's all the slot and the agent.
