I just wanted to spread the gospel. It's an amazing movie, really on another level compared to anything else I've seen this year or last.
You may have seen the trailer, you may have said, "eh, what's the big deal?" Well, it's hilarious, for starters. And not in a Dumb and Dumber way. But it's also tremendously touching and explores relationships and love in a more insightful and entertaining way than anything I've ever seen on screen.
I walked out of the theater stunned by its excellence.

I really enjoyed the movie as well. Charlie Kaufman is really on a roll with the movies he's writing lately, and it's a great breath of fresh air how smart and funny his movies are. Adaptation - Confessions of a Dangerous Mind - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind...not bad for a couple year's work!

And don't forget 'Being John Malkovich", another brilliant Kaufman script.

I also enjoyed this movie greatly. Very good movie for someone to see whos had a bad relationship experience recently.

Wretch. This is the same guy? I hated that movie- it was just downright stupid. But I'm hopeful as this movie looks a lot more interesting.

Mrs. Q and I went to see it today. Very, very clever - Kaufman's touch is obviously heavy here. I don't think it was as coherent a film as either Adaptation or Malkovich, but I did enjoy it. Jim Carrey was surprisingly good, though I felt this character could have used a little more depth. The real star was the story/script, though.
My best guess, though, is that if you walked out of Being John Malkovich saying things like "downright stupid," then this simply won't be your cup of tea. To each his own, I suppose.

I've wanted to see this. When does it come out on video? I was a big fan of Adaptation even though it got a little goofy at the end. I didn't like Being John Malkovitch as much as everyone else but still thought it was a solid movie.

I liked this movie too. And I generally hate Jim Carrey.

I saw this movie in the theatre, I was totally amazed. However my girlfriend and the other couple we went with merely thought it was "ok". With most movies that I really enjoy, but many people do not, I can generally understand what it was about the movie that made it appeal more to me than them. This one still has me stumped though, I can't understand what they didn't see in it.

The best or second best movie I saw this year- great movie. I actually went with my 11 year old cousin (who's probably smarter than most adults I know) and he enjoyed it as well- its a fairly celebral movie..

The end of Adaptation is what moved that movie (and screenplay) into the surreal, IMO. I laughed my ass off when I realized that earlier in the movie, the lead character had talked about the low-class modern screenwriter's ways of turning everything into a car chase with drug dealers. :)
I still haven't seen Eternal Spotlight but I am waiting for it to come out on video.

I just saw this right now... what a good movie. I'll definitely have to watch it a second time, and I don't do that with too many movies.

For the record, this movie really messed with my head.
But I can absolutely say it was the only Jim Carrey movie I've seen that I'll watch again.
Kaufman did a great job with the writing.

Very, very good movie. It really bothers me when Hollywood or the critics or whoever picks a movie like Lost in Translation to the be the poster child of the small independent film and get all the attention when it was really just a decent movie. Eternal Sunshine should be the one getting the accolades. Here's hoping it does.

I posted recently in the Books thread over in the dynasty section that one of my favorite authors, Rudy Rucker, has one of his books,The Master of Space and Time, set to become a Dreamworks movie starring Jack Black. After looking around a little more I discovered that the fellow that directed Eternal Sunshine, Michel Gondry, is also attached to the project. I gather this movie is still a ways off from entering production...IMDB lists it as in development with no start date set.

I guess saw it (Netflix) and WOW! I was bowled over. This could be one of my fav movies of all time. I have to watch again, just to see the links, but the message was great and the way the story was told was amazing. Carrey was just excellent in it. It was rumored that before Carrey said yes, Nick Cage was tagged for the role. I'm glad Cage didn't get it.

*MINOR SPOILER ALERT* (I guess)
Weird. I just saw this movie in the theater on Friday (things come slowly here in Belgium). I was going to search to see if there was a thread on it, but luckily the mountain came to Mohamed.
I thought it was a good movie. Cool ideas. Good script. Some solid themes (e.g., invetibility of our nature and our inability to escape it. Scorpion and the frog type stuff). And like the majority of folks here, I tend to dislike Jim Carrey, but thought he did a solid job.
The only drawback for me was the fact that the whole movie was about him fighting to keep this girl/relationship that I found rather annoying. Kate's beautiful and did a solid job with the role, but I found her character pretty annoying and a bit of a cliche it has to be said. Crazy, troubled girl with a zest for life. I think Sandra Bullock has played this role at least a dozen times. Not nearly as well as Kate, mind you.

YOU BASTARD!!!!
I have had this movie #1 in my que at net flix since Sept. and I am still waiting
:(
Who do you have to sleep with at netflix to get a recent release? Actually this is the only movie I have ever had troubles with. I emailed them and could only get a standard waiting list type answer.
I know I read somewhere that they are going to release a special edition in January. I wonder if it will be some kind of directors cut?
Actually the Special edition: STREET DATE: JANUARY 4, 2005
I have never seen where a movie was released to DVD and then rereleased to DVD only 4 months later. Sounds like a patch to me? Why in the world would any studio release 2 versions of the exact same movie at basically the same time? Othe than $$$.$$

Just wanted to chime in also. Outstanding movie, and I hope It does well come Oscar season. Michel Gondry should win best director, IMHO. Screenplay and then probably lead actor also deserve some serious consideration. But Gondry most of all.
If you watch the 'making of' feature that comes with it, you see how he's basically the anti-George Lucas. Everything about the movie was about making it look real, making it really happen on set, and going for as organic a look & feel as possible. Even down to the point where Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet did the voices for the children scenes live on-set as the scenes were being shot, rather than in some sound studio after the filming was complete. A lot of directors could take a lesson for two from him.

Just saw this based on the recommendations above. Thanks guys. I can honestly say I would have never watched this without this thread, and I'm glad I did.
Nice to see something different than the usual action Bruckheimer (sp?) retreads.
