The company has named Chief Operating Officer Charlie Bell to be the new CEO.
Mr. Cantalupo was a McDonald's executive for 28 years, and was the CEO for the past 15 months. Reports in the business press say he improved McDonald's food and service, helping boost the share price more than 70 percent. He was 60 years old.
Last week, under Mr. Cantalupo's guidance, the company started an anti-obesity education campaign that the restaurant chain says will promote exercise and healthier food choices. Critics accuse the company of contributing to an obesity epidemic in the United States by serving fatty hamburgers and super-size servings of french fries.
McDonald's is the world's largest restaurant chain with 30,000 restaurants around the world that serve 46 million customers each day.
New CEO Charlie Bell is an Australian who started with the company cooking hamburgers at the age of 15. Now 43, he is credited with nearly doubling the number of restaurants in Australia during the six years he was in charge of the chain's operations in that nation.
