I'm looking at upgrading my current coach with an experienced player on my roster. The question I have is with regards to "Trainer type". I have three options; Defensive minded, fond of attacking, and neither attack nor defensive minded. What should I be evaluating when I make this decision?
My team currently plays the 3-5-2 and we train Playmaking. Our strength is in the midfield, but our offense and defense are both average. Anyone have any opinions on which I should choose? Defensive minded, fond of attacking, or neither attack nor defensive minded?
Thanks for the input.
I also train playmaking. I used to have a defensive coach.Changed for an offensive, but despite my defensive ratings dropping, I didn't see my offensive ratings climb accordingly. For the next one (2-3 seasons) I would go balanced.
I think Raven Hawk is pretty happy with his balanced coach

If your offense and defense are evenly matched then I would take an offensive coach hands down. Two simple reasons: offense beats defense in the engine right now. A team with a minor offensive advantage will beat the same team with a minor defensive advantage. Not only that, but it's cheaper to upgrade on defense than on offense. You can go out and get a keeper to improve your defense at all 3 spots, but it takes at least 2 strikers to do the same and, between the two, they will be more expensive than upgrading a keeper.

I switched from an offensive to a balanced coach a few weeks ago. I saw virtually no change in my offensive ratings but my defensive ratings went up significantly.

two words for you: GOAL DIFFERENTIAL...
That's the reason I like my offensive minded coach, that and what SI said: offense beats defense in the engine right now...

I wish I could remember where or when I read it, but it said something like...
Offensive Coach gives 15% boost to attack ratings
Defensive Coach gives 20% boost to defense ratings
Neutral Coach gives a 10% boost to attact ratings and 10% boost to defense ratings.
Im pretty sure thats what the numbers were, but I dont know where they got them.
If its true, I personally think a Neutral Coach might the best overall choice since you only give up 5% of the attack boost compared to an offensive coach to get an extra 10% in defense as well.
Unless you want every ounce of attack boost you can get, then go with a offensive one.

The way I see it, a defensive coach boosts defense more than an offensive coach boosts offense. Also, a defensive coach depresses offense less than an offensive coach depresses defense. I switched to a neutral coach as well, and I like it much better.

Well, I went with the balanced coach. Hopefully it will mesh with my current squad. I'm mainly doing it for the training, but I wanted to get some opinions from those of you who had hired coaches recently. Thanks to everyone for sharing your insight on the situation.

Balanced coaches rock..... Plain and simple. And don't listen to all these guys that say offense is WAY better then defense. Take a look around the ML and div II in the USA, you see just as many teams with badass defenses and average offenses as you see teams with badass offenses and average defenses.
Don't get me started or this could get ugly :)

Offensive coach. One simple reason: goalkeepers. It's incredibly simple to upgrade your defensive ratings. Trying to upgrade your offense is much more involved.
Plus, defense sucks to watch. I'd rather lose 4-3 than tie 0-0.

if you spent the same money on a good forward as you do on a good goalie then your offense would increase drastically.
My defense and my goalie combined might cost 2 million.... total! And its almost as good as the guy i played last week(my form is in the crapper and his is great also) and will play this week. He's spent 5.5 million on his goalie alone and 7 million total on his whole defense.
So i disagree completely.... this whole defense sucks thing is absolutely retarded. People just don't use it right. They field a divine defense with a passable attack and a passable midfield then bitch about losing???? and say defense sucks???
Plus its not all about defense versus offense here... its about bang for your buck. With an offense coach you gain 'MAYBE' 3/4's of a level of offense (i think its more like 1/2 a level) over a balanced coach. But you lose around 1 1/4 levels of defense.
I wasn't a believer until i did some research and im pretty sure most of the people arguing here haven't actually looked at teams with balanced coachs and compared.
Heres a quick and easy one to look up...... Using the USA's 2 national coaches......
Onion Patch has a balanced coach and TP has an offensive coach. There defenses are VERY close....
Airborne Penguins
Player rating and Team formation
Right Side Defence: supernatural - (14)
Central Defence: world class - (13)
Left Side Defence: magnificent - (12)
Onion Patch
Player rating and Team formation
Right Side Defence: supernatural - (14)
Central Defence: magnificent - (12)
Left Side Defence: outstanding - (10) (with a normal wingback, add 1-2 levels if played defensive)
Now TP has spent around 13.4 million on his defense.... wanna know how much Onion Patch spent??? 5.3 million....
There are plenty more just like this... Do some research. Look at DK's defensive ratings.... he does that with 3 outstanding defenders and a high solid goalie, he's almost got the same ratings TP has!!
anyway i'll shut up now....

Np man....
I think the problem with balanced coaches is that they're still new to HT. So alot people don't actually take the time to learn about them. I was the same way, then Masked and I got talking about them before we both switched coaches and i did a WHOLE bunch of research on them. In the end i just feel you get more bang for your buck out of a balanced coach. Offensive coaches were weakened quite a few times by the HT gods because almost everyone and they're mother had them. Now they do so much damage to defense that i can't justfiy having one. Now maybe in 6-7 seasons when i can afford a divine goalie and 3 Super-naturel defenders i'll get a offensive coach :)
Im not saying that balanced coaches are the best thing since sliced bread :) im just saying that people shouldn't just write them off like they do with defensive coaches.
