View Full Version : It's over: Quitting tobacco

Well, since I started chewing in the military some 14 years ago, I've been a closet dipper for the last 5 years, only chewing when noone is around. I've tried everything from substitutes to quit programs, to gum, to internet help: http://www.quitsmokeless.org/. Nothing has worked, I have to have at least one chew everyday, mostly at night when I play sports games. My longest quit was 14 days. :(

I figured the only option I have left is to post a 100 day diary/dynasty here where I spend a third of my life. :)

I will quit as of Midnight tonight 04/25/2004 and post 1 post per day until I reach 100 days, which would be quite an accomplishment for me... and according to QS.org, the title of "Hall of Famer".

Wish me luck, there will a post everyday, much about nothing... but if I don't post, you will know I have failed yet again.

Todd

Edit: I had the wrong date.. as Monday, the 25th will be my first day. The weekends are the hardest and Monday is an ideal day to quit with work keeping me busy.

Good luck Todd! Please don't get the urge to do so as the Cardinals plummet from contention in the upcoming weeks and months.

:) Good luck again!

As a former smokeless tobacco chewer I wish you luck. I know how hard it is to quit, I haven't had one in...hmm, 4 years now? 3 or 4 years, something like that. I still dream about chewing, it's amazing how that stuff can get a hold on you.

Thanks, I'll need all the encouragement I can get. :)

If it's anything like smoking, you will think life will completely suck for about a month. After that, you will think about it for a few more months, but you will find yourself just thinking about it and not actually "wanting" to do it.

Then you will just dream about it like a million dollars, something that is completely unrealistic to achieve but you still want.

It will work out just fine and you get to keep your lower jaw and lip as a bonus. :D

I look foward to hearing from you more. Sounds like you have been through it before and made it. Congrats!

Good luck. You definitely have a challenge in front of you. I'm the same way. I think it's a psychological association with sitting in front of the computer since I'll watch TV and not want one.

Yep, what you really need is to do is change up your routine, as doing the same thing will be KILLER on trying to quit.

Best of luck to you, I just quit chewing myself a year ago, and it was hard, but obviously well worth it. My health and my wallet thank me. ;)

Try to take up some constructive to compensate as well. I took up running when I quit, and would just force myself to go exercise any time I was craving a chew. Just find something to take your mind off it.

Thanks Desnudo and Calis, it's really nice to see people giving me encouragement. :) Two hours until my last can goes down the toliet.

I just bought a Crossbow Platnium workout machine about 2 months ago, I think working out will help the craves... as least it'll make me lift more.

Oh how golf league this week will be interesting as my friend puts a chew in his mouth.

Day 1

Work went ok, but I'm home and ready for a chew. I guess I'll tackle a piece a gum. :(

Actually, the first few days are easy, it's the weekends I hate.

Thanks Corbes!

After two months, I went back to chewing every night and well, going on 33 - I need to quit for good.

After reading VPI's thread, I'm ready to get back on the horse.

Day 1 starts tomorrow, July 12th.

As of tonight, all chewing tobacco is gone from the house.

Good luck man! I'm not a tobacco person myself, but I know it helps motivate me to know that people are reading my weight loss dynasty, so here's a quick post to let you know I'm reading this one and cheering you on.

Good thing you got around a second attempt to quit here - a small suggestion though. Don't stop posting if you cave in, step forwards and acknowledge the mistake. It adds to the motivation to try to avoid the humiliation (as little as there can be on a message board) to confess in public.

Todd,

Chew and tobacco in general are more addictive than cocaine. Good luck with your efforts to quit. I'm not hoping you slip up again, but I want you to know that many people do slip up several times. People that restart usually say to themselves, "I F'd up, I might as well keep chewing for a few days or a few weeks (or even longer)." Even if you give into a moment of temptation, it doesn't mean that you have to give in for a few days or weeks, etc.

Good luck and I look forward to reading about your progress :)

Sorry, I always forget to check the dynasty forum when I'm quickly browsing. I pinched a dip last night at the demolition derby... I don't think you can live here unless you have a can ring in the pocket of your jeans.

One dip, one mistake... back to gum.

doing ok.. had one dip last night with an old can, but I spit it out rather quickly. It's tough working late hours.
