ZFL Pro-Bowl Starting Rosters

"Thumbless Jackson walked to the center of the field for the coin toss. It was a familiar place for him, the center of a barely thawed tundra in Anchorage, Alaska, home of the ZFL pro-bowl. How long will it be familiar? For the first time, his election to the pro-bowl squad wasn't unanimous. Rookie Johnny Rotten got a vote, and already the hounds of the media are ready to crown Rotten as Jackson's successor.

But for now, the familiar is still comfortable. Jackson knows he goes into this game with Rajah Saleem at running back, a unanimous selection. Milwaukee's Bulldozer will be there, too. Perhaps the most familiar--he'll be throwing to his two favorite targets, Jackson Jackson and Luke Jackson.

But in front of him, an unfamiliar line. Little Rock's Keith Slapinski will be blocking for Saleem, while Milwaukee's No Sacks Allowed will guard his blind side. Right in front, a pair of mammoth guards that give Thumbless peace of mind, Birmingham's Another Troy and Chicago's Tom Sanders. Thumbless is disappointed the familiar Fort Sumter isn't in front, but he knows he'll be well protected with the guards that have come today.

Defensive captain Superman joins Thumbless at midfield. He has some old friends here, too, including unanimous selection DT Hera and safety Odysseus. But he'll be asked to share the flat with MLB Ell Capone and guard the middle with CN DT The Poopsmith. Superman is focused on the run today, because he knows ZFL sack leader Strong Mad and stud Another Atlantis will have their radar focused on Sizzlack, and behind him, Knoxville speed demon Deion Jackson. Yes, Sizzlack is going to have it tough. Superman smiles at the thought. The defensive captain looks around for friends, and finds one more. Bruce Handily. Now Superman laughs, laughs hard. Oh, yes, the West is in trouble."

*****
"Across the field, the cool hand of QB Moe Sizzlack is tapping nervously. Oh, Sizzlack is used to this kind of pressure, and he has unanimous selection and friend Ralph Wiggum guarding his flank, but Sizzlack remembers all too well. He remembers how much trouble rookie Lothar Dirtpounder had last year in the pro-bowl. Today, Lothar is in the backfiled again.

Before he goes out on the field though, a pair of pals come and pop him on the shoulder. FB Rashaan Salaam smiles, "I got your back, man. And I'll make sure the pup gets some holes to run through." On the ohter side, unanimous selection Manfred von Richthofen says, "I'll tell you the same thing I tell Paddy O. Just get me the d#&$ ball." Then the ManChild flashes his killer smile and flexes a bicep reminiscent of Shannon Sharpe or David Boston. This freak is a receiver?

Sizzlack has little to worry about from his O-line, however. He has some dynamite players in front of him. Wiggum and Freddie Prinze, Jr. on the tackles, Lone Star and unanimous perennial all-star Erik Flamebeard at guard.

Kicker Steve McLaughlin joins Sizzlack to take the field for the coin toss. McLaughlin isn't sure whether he's comforted or unsettled by the snarls coming from the man next to him...

Defensive captain Ray Lewis growls as he takes the field. He'll be leading a defense that includes members of the Margarita Monsters and the Military Middle. It could be really ugly for the East. And Lewis loves it.

How good could the Military Middle be if Lewis instead of Sectoid Commander were at MLB? We find out today. Unanimous selection Colonel Joseph C. McCormick III and DT Captain Bipto will provide the front. Toby McGwire and former pro-bowl MVP All Pro are more than capable on the ends. Behind him, Lewis has Ray Liotta and Master Hu Li. Oh, yeah, Lewis is feelin' it.

But then, there's the kid. Sure, the kid did well this season, better than anyone expected. But is he ready for this game? Rookies don't usually do well at the ProBowl. But Lewis is confident. Whenever OLB Pops made a mistake this season, Lewis could cover him. He'll do it again. Heck, with the Military Middle in front of him and Liotta behind him, Lewis isn't going to have much to do! Might as well do what he's done all year--dominate."

This actually goes back to what hyperion007 was saying on the "Paddy O is overrated" thread on the FOZ board (Front Office ZFL). That thread ran about 2,300 posts long, worse than the Kurt Warner thread. Some said "just look at Paddy's numbers." Other said, "look at his wins." Still others said it was just the line, or just the system, or that his receivers make him look good. Of course, about 700 of those posts were from some fanatic named Coffee Warlord, but still...what a debate! We may never find out just how good (or bad) Paddy O really is, but the question remains...would Manfred be even more dominant if he played in a different system?

In other news, Portland has reported rejected Albuquerque's trade offer of retired RB Martin "Team Discovery Channel" Prince and a bag of Doritos (Big Grab) for the, ahem, Manchild. The Isotopes absolutely refused to include a bag of Funyuns, as well. But one could only dream.

Nevstar, them's fightin' words...I love it!

Outlook from the coach of the western pro-bowlers, the coach of the San Antonio Margaritas:

"Even though we face an outstanding offense, even though their offensive roster is filled with stars like JJ and Tom Sanders and Rajah, etc., I have complete confidence in our defense. Ray Lewis is the most competent and capable captain I have ever seen. With the Military Middle in front of him, Lewis and company should shut down the running game and press on the pass.

Offensively, we're going to have use our components well, play like Cincinnati played this year, mixing it up and getting every playmaker a touch. We won't shy away from giving Lothar the ball, not at all, but we can't ignore the power running of Salaam. Sizzlack has a pair of incredible receivers to throw to, and, frankly, I think Ashton Kucher may be the most underrated all-star here. Our offensive line is awesome; so we just have to spread the rock around and keep everyone in the game. I see a win for the West, 21-14."

Outlook from the coach of the eastern pro-bowlers, the coach of the Birmingham Olympians:

"The ZFL probowl isn't about how good you are, but about exploiting the other team's weaknesses. I know we have the talent to match the west, but we won't beat them unless we isolate the weaknesses and abuse them.

The first couple of places we're going to look for weakness are Lorthar Dirtpounder and OLB Pops. Lothar struggled last year, and Pops is a rookie now. They might play above and beyond, they might beat us, but they are the first ones we'll put in our sights. Rajah Saleem is fast enough to get to the outside...will Pops be able to wrap him up? Superman will spy on Lothar...will he be able to go anywhere?

Of course, I've got a few more tricks up my sleeve, but I'm not giving them all away. I see the east winning, 28-14."

ZFL ProBowl predictions

Pat Summerall: "Looking at the two squads, the West clearly has the superior defense. Their offensive line is absolutely outstanding, no weaknesses. With Sizzlack to guide them, I just don't see the East matching up. I predict West, 35-14."

John Madden: "Well, I've gotta disagree. You take a look over here at Superman, and you draw a line to over here, and Pow! Then, zap, you gotta figure the turducken will Bam! on the Bruce says I'll kick your butt and then you know he means Handily, cuz' I mean, when I was with the Raiders we always said, that POW! and Boom!"

Pat: "So, you're taking the East?"

John: "You better believe it. East, 30-17."

Pat: "John, that score isn't possible in the ZFL."

John: "Well, it's a contract year, so you gotta figure."

Pat: "Yeah. Somebody has to."

ZFL ProBowl Results

"The Bowl begins with the East having possession on their own 20. On the first play, true to his word, the Eastern coach looks to exploit OLB Pops. Rajah Saleem sweeps left with Guard Tom Sanders pulling. But the West was ready for it as DT Captain Bipto crashes through the hole left by Sanders and drags down Saleem, who was slowed as Pops and Ray Lewis crowded the corner.

The East manages a first down on a pass to Jackson Jackson, but little more. The West takes their first possession in excellent field position.

On the First play, the west comes out in a power I, with Lothar Dirtpounder deep behind FB Rashaan Salaam. East linebackers Ell Capone and Superman come streaking in, keying on Lothar, but the quick handoff goes to Rashan Salaam instead! OG Lone Star demolishes East DT The Poopsmith on the pancake KRB, and with the linebackers fooled into watching Lothar, Rashaan Salaam sprints into the secondary untouched! Deion Jackson gives chase, but it's all over all too quick...33 quick yards on the first play, and suddenly, the West is up 7-0. Touchdown, Salaami! Whoa. Nobody saw that comin'.

The East takes over at their 40, down suddenly and a bit shaken. They move the ball slowly, as DEs All Pro and Toby McGwire are holding the edges against Rajah. Jackson Jackson pulls in a couple more grabs--he appears to have the edge over CB Master Hu Li--but the drive stalls when MLB Ray Lewis seals the hole against East FB Bulldozer.

On the next West possession, the western all-stars move the ball effectively. Keeping OLB Superman off-balance by mixing up Salaam and Lothar runs with tosses into the flat and a post to Manfred von Richthofen. This drive dies in the redzone when safety Odysseus slaps a pass away from Ashton Kucher.

Once again, the East attempt to get to Pops, but the Western defensive squad is playing a solid front. There's nothing up the middle, and Ray Lewis is covering his teammate well.

On the West's next drive, it's all about the offensive line. An unexpected tackle trap enables Freddie Prinze, Jr. to blow Superman out and make a lane for a 16-yard run by Lothar. OG Lone Star blows up The Poopsmith again, and Lothar picks up 12. On third and goal, Moe Sizzlack drops back--his protection has been flawless; the O-line is a brick wall--and floats a fade over Deion Jackson. WR Manfred von Richthofen uses strength and positioning to go up and get the rock, and now it's West, 14-0.

In the second quarter, the East finally got a break--a big one. Though it hadn't been successful, the East tried the sweep again. Guard Another Troy pulled left, Bulldozer put down the block on Colonel Joseph, and Another Troy locked on to Ray Lewis. Lewis came up to make the play, but ended up bug squash on the Another Troy windshield. This left Rajah to squirt around the outside, with only Pops between him and a big gain. Rajah gave a shake'n'bake and turned on the jets. Pops' knees didn't stand a chance. Rajah raced past him and shot down the sideline. WR Luke Jackson (quietly known in the league as one of the better run-blocking wideouts) sealed up safety Ray Liotta. Rajah faked inside to freeze Liotta then ran around Jackson, down the sideline, and into the endzone. A 53-yard TD flash, and the East pulled to within 7.

The spark became a momentum shift. The second quarter belonged to the East. OLB Superman nailed down the outside and raced in for a sack, CB Deion Jackson shut down the passing game, and safety Odysseus cleaned up the spare parts. The offense started to roll, as Thumbless timed routes just right to his familiar targets, Luke and JJ. With time running out, Thumbless hit JJ on a 17-yard toss...touchdown! 14-14 at the half.

In the West locker room, coach of the Margaritas looked at his team. "I've had my chance to play with all the toys on this team," he said. "You guys are all brilliant. But there's one place I know we can win, if we stick to our guns and beat them where we've got the advantage. This means some of you won't see the touches you saw in the first half. But if you follow me, I know we can beat these guys. Whaddaya say? You want to play for egos, or do you want to play to win?"

The team answered in the second half. From the gun, the West's powerful linemen pounded the opposition. In Margarita fashion, the West rammed the ball down the East's throat and put the clamps on defense. Freddie Prinze, Jr., Ralph Wiggum, Erik Flamebeard, and Lone Star came out of the lockerroom grinnin'. When they plowed the way for Lothar Dirtpounder to put the West up, 21-14, their grins got wider.

On the East's next possession, DE All Pro spun out of No Sacks Allowed's grip and slammed into QB Thumbless Jackson just as Jackson was releasing the ball. The pass wobbled, ducked, and safety Ray Liotta adjusted on the fly. Liotta ran the INT back to the East 4 yard-line before he was pushed out by JJ.

A couple of plays later, Erik Flamebeard provided the push, and FB Rashaan Salaam provided the punch. West is up, 28-14.

The East was getting pushed aroundd in the trenches. Thumbless was starting to feel some heat. So the East pulled out some tricks. On second and 8, Rajah Saleem took the toss, then danced in the backfield before throwing the ball to FB Bulldozer, who had snuck down field. Only heads up play by safety Ray Liotta saved a TD. But a few plays later, Tom Sanders blew up a hole just big enough for Rajah to run through. The East is back, 21-28. But is there enough time for a comeback? They've got to stop the West and then mount one more drive before this is over.

The West, however, had no intention of ever giving the ball back. Pounding away, left, right, and up the middle, the West slowly made their way downfield. Though Lothar Dirtpounder only averaged 3.1 yards per carry, Rashaan Salaam topped 100 yards rushing and nailed some key first downs. As time ticked away, the East had to hold the West, who had hammered to within 16 yards of the endzone.

The West lined up the in the I, and with only 2 yards to go for a first, Sizzlack turned to hand off to Lothar. FB Rashaan Salaam put a block on Ell Capone, and Lothar Crashed into the line...

...but Lothar doesn't have the ball! Thumbless kept it on the play-action! After popping Capone, Salaam released and drifted up the center...Thumbless turns and tosses a floater over the middle...Capone is scrambling back...Superman is taking the angle...

...and Salaam pulls it in! Superman crushes him, but he holds on! Touchdown! The West goes up, 35-21, and that's how it stays! The West wins! West wins! 35-21.

MVP
"There were several solid performances in this game. For the East, WR JJ played solidly, as did OLB Superman. For the West, the entire O-line deserved the MVP award. But with 104 yards rushing, 41 receiving, and 3 touchdowns, it's hard to overlook FB Rashaan Salaam. With a nod to that O-line, 3 touchdowns is 3 touchdowns. MVP: EP FB Rashaan Salaam.
