on the screen in hattrick that shows your players stars and formation, there is a field called something like "team experience".
how does this factor into your match? does it just help prevent confusion from new formations or does it actually improve ratings or something else?

Team experience does a couple of things for you. First, you are correct, in that the higher your team experience, the lower the chance of confusion when using an unfamiliar formation. Also, from the rules...
"Nervous situations". - Very important or dramatice matches, might mean that inexperienced players loose their grip on the game. This gets worse, the more they lack experience. Only the team with the lowest amount of experience will be subject to this, during the match.
Also note that your team captain has a greater effect on your team experience rating than any other player on the field. The experience and leadership ratings for the captain are both taken into effect (but don't ask me exactly how much of a modifier there is for the captain).

So if I read the rules section you quoted correctly, only the team with the lower total exerpience can have a "inexperience event" in a match?

That's my interpretation as well. Of course, if both teams have a "poor" team experience rating, there's no way to easily tell which team has the lower experience. Like anything else, I'm sure there's a "high poor" and a "low poor."

I don't know how much of a differential is needed for a bad experience event, but the effects are really ugly when it happens. See some qualifiers from last season (e.g. Indy's loss to G's Goons) or the U.S. Open Cup final.
