View Full Version : Quit Hating!
5/20/2004 Manually editing links
It seems that the latest reminder regarding cheating and following the rules was not enough to make people actually read the rules. The rules of Hattrick is really simple. One of the rules is that you are NOT ALLOWED to ...try to fetch information that is not available as links on the site, or posting data in the same way. If this rule is not clear enough, it means that you are not allowed to manually edit links to try and access information that you are not meant to be able to access. As stated in the rules, this might lead to disqualification from Hattrick.
Those who have not recently read the rules might want to do so: Rules regarding your behavior

ummmm.... people might want to stop using my HT-Arena Stats Maker. I am asking the GM if looking at XML output from matches is illegal according to these rules or not. I have a feeling they are going to tell us to stop.

Yeah, I was wondering if that would be considered altering links.
Or if they're talking about something else all together..

I think they are actually talking about a way to cheat or see information you aren't supposed to, like other team's players skills or something. I cant see why looking at match XML output is a banable offense. Actually, I have a feeling people have programs to scan the transfer wires for clowns and automatically bid the 10k max for 0 valued ones. It seems like the same people always get to them first. Anyway, that last one is just a theory.
But I bet this gets caught in the cross fire since they are just going to say "all" manual linking is forbidden. and there are no links to "&outputtype=XML"
So, Ill have to try and apply for CHPP again, but I'm sure I'll get turned down again.

Yeap, this is what I was afraid of, the dreaded generic answer. Straight from a GM email...
"It is not permitted to access hattrick at all through any sort of
manual link."
So looks like its the death of ht-arena stats maker. Sorry guys. I would suggest you stop using it.
The reason I didnt get chpp acceptance before was that I apparently wasnt offering the program to enough people, or that it didnt help enough people. I dont remember exactly how it was worded. The program is generic enough now that maybe I can get it passed if I try again.

fyi, i started working on a new version of ht-arena stats maker. (it probably wont be released until monday since i dont have a .NET compiler at home)
rather than fight for chpp again, im making it so the user will have to manually type in the text fields or select from combo boxes on a form. all the info to type in can be easily retrieved without any manual editing of links.
it will make the program a bit more of a pain to use, but it will still be usable and 100% legal then.

to use my program, you had to go to a particular match page and then type in "&outputtype=XML"
that is technically manually editing a link according to the GM's. i emailed them to double check. on top of that, i read that the xml output is only for chpp certified applications, which mine is not.

Although, if a CHPP-approved application retrieves it and saves it, it's OK for a non-CHPP application to use it. e.g. I haven't checked to see how many xml files (if any) Hattrick Buddy has left hanging around, but if it has left them, I would be able to load them up in your program without any repurcussions.

Ok, I finished the new version that does not use XML anymore and does not require you to use manual links. Ill send out PM messages with the link to download it to those that I know use it.

Also I know there are probably going to be a few questions on how to add matches now. Just PM me.
One big question is how to add players that didnt have stats before. Just select "Unlisted Player" at the top of the Player List. It will prompt you for all their information after you add them and their goals and cards.
