I'm running GK training and have finally gotten one of my two trainees to a sellable point; popping a 20 y/o outstanding this past training cycle. My other trainee is a 19 y/o excellent at this point.

At what point should I sell the 20 y/o? Outstanding is a pretty good break point, and one I'm comfortable with, but should I sell him now at the tail end of the season at 20, or at the start of the season (albeit a year older)? The third option is to keep the 20 y/o as my main GK, sell the 19 y/o when he eventually hits outstanding (next season, I think), and move on to a different training program?

I dont like to train anyone past 20. I try to gain maximum profit from my training program which means training only young players. i suggest sell him, and buy a 17yo who is at least passable (which should be cheap this time of season). normally i would say its ok to buy a skilled 18yo if the price is right, but this late in the season only buy 17.

also, i suggest pulling goalies from your YS, especially early next season, you may hit the jackpot. if you do get a young, skilled guy from your own YS, then sell your oldest trainee (or if one recently popped sell him) right away and start training that new gem. train for at least 2 seasons till they are 19/20 again and you should make a killing when you sell them :)

The formidable-outstanding step is the first one at the plateau of maximum training return for keepers, from what I can see (maybe even still a hair below what you can get going e.g. brilliant-magnificent). Training young players helps you maximize your return, but skill level is also a consideration. You won't necessarily be forgoing money by training past 20.

If you're considering a switch in training, a couple of things go into your planning. First, how soon do you want to switch, and second, how soon do you need cash to upgrade your team?

I'm pondering a similar decision myself (except my current 20-yo is magnificent, and my other trainee is 18 and about to hit outstanding). What I've about settled on is, if I promote, I sell the 20-yo and upgrade at forward and possibly defense; if I don't, I keep my current players, keep the current 20-yo as my keeper forward (he'd be good enough for at least division III and possibly division II, were I fortunate enough to advance that far), sell the 18-yo at the end of next season at the next step after magnificent, and switch to either scoring or winger training.

It being a seller's market right now, I'd wait until the new season. You're not going to lose much money in the 20 to 21 year age difference, and with everyone having money from the renewal of supporter fees, promotion bonus, etc, you'll see a better price on him. But if you're going to sell him, I'd definitely purchase a new trainee now, and start him on the rotation (ie, stop training the Outstanding guy); I think that getting a new trainee one extra week of training is worth more than the added price you'll get for selling an Outstanding + 1.
