Hearts of Iron banned in China
As reported earlier, China has begun to control content of games sold in that country. One of the first victims of this scrutinization is the PC game Hearts of Iron, which is now banned there.
From China Daily, "'China has banned a Swedish-made computer game for "distorting history and damaging China's sovereignty and territorial integrity,' the Ministry of Culture (MOC) said Friday."
"The PC game, 'Hearts of Iron', was accused of distorting historical facts in describing the Fascist regimes of Japan, Germany and Italy during World War II."
"Moreover, 'Manchuria', 'West Xinjiang', and 'Tibet' appeared as independent sovereign countries in the maps of the game. In addition, it even included China's Taiwan province as the territory of Japan at the beginning of the game."
I was a beta tester for Hearts of Iron and one of the areas I contributed to was the map, including actually doing the scripting for that map. Apparently, China didn't appreciate our use of the Japanese created puppet state of Manchukuo, or the defacto independence of Sinkiang or Tibet that our source maps indicated. (Not noted is that the game starts with the Communists and Nationalists at war in China, or the fact that China was originally given claims on all of these areas (they may have been removed in later versions for gamebalance, I forget))
I just thought it was cool to hear I had damaged China's sovereignty, simply by beta testing a game :p
