im currently training playmaking b/c i run the 3-5-2 but im started to think i dont have the personnel to run that formation and many of the players i already have are decent at defense. this coupled with the fact that HT is toning down playmaking's importance makes me think i should switch to the
4-5-1 and train defense. my question then is if i train defense in the 4-5-1 would all my players except forwards get defense training? or just the central defenders and wing backs? any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Just Central Defenders and Wing Backs.

2. If you want to train midfield then get the personnel to do so. Since you have a new team sell your good non-midfielders and buy some trainees with the money. You're in the lowest division, you don't have to worry about relegation. Train based on what you want to do, not what your team looks like right now.
3. You don't know what the depth of the changes are to midfield, or what the impact will be. It's hard to make decisions based on assumptions. When selecting training, I'd think more in terms of how you want your games to flow. If you like 1-0 scores then train defense. If you like 4-3 train offense. If you want to see 60% possession then train midfield.

thanks for the heads up, i also figured out i can still train the same number of guys with playmaking and just do the 4-5-1 instead so my defense isnt so porous. any other suggestions?

Defense doesn't work all that well as a strategy. There's something to be said for keeping up a 4-5-1 for when you need it, but I certainly wouldn't recommend using it as a primary formation unless you're training defense.

a large number of the people in my league use the 3-4-3 with lots of success, esp. against my 3-5-2. until i get enough cash for some better scorers, i figured the 4-5-1 would give me my best chance of winning some games.

you will still get screwed fairly regularly, at least in my opinion. I always have the feeling that defense is way underrated versus offense. I would think that your best shot at winning against a 3-4-3 would be to kill them in possession...
welcome aboard by the way :)

dola,
I also used to play 4-5-1 until my lone forward was once injured, then in another game got redcarded. Having only one forward in there kills your three attack ratings, not only the central one...

Just get some young PM'ers and keep training Playmaking and use the 352, you'll own them in midfield in a season or two after they pop a few times.

In lower leagues, say V in Canada and VI in USA, a good midfield is often good enough to have fairly good results in league play...
