CM: Coaching a National Team

I was offered the job of Coach of the English National Team at the beginning of my current season, and I accepted. However, a match was just played without me coaching. I didn't realize the match had passed until I saw the results. Do I have to do anything in particular to make myself coach the matches?

Are u sure it was the National team and not the Under 21? I wish I could get offered a job like that myself....

Yes, I'm positive. The wierd thing is I missed that game and one friendly was cancelled when I first became coach, but I was just asked to submit a squad for an upcoming World Cup Qualifying game. Hopefully, I actually get to coach this game.

Dola. I was offered the job after winning the European Championship, the Premiereship, and the England League Cup with Manchester United. I was offered the Man U job after two very successful years with Hull.

Not bad....I've had some good success with Barcelona, won the Spanish League 3 straight years (followed by the recent 2 runner up finishes) as well as winning the UEFA Cup as well as the European Championship. No such offers though

Managing at international level in CM is great, you don't get to do it a lot (at least, not if you don't manage big clubs much) so it is always a treat. Some of my best memories in the game come from my times at the helm of Ireland and Portugal. Ireland especially, including a heart-breaking loss in the World Cup 2006 quarter-finals on penalties to Spain, after we dominated the match. Good times.

Well, I don't know why the friendly was cancelled, and the last game was played without me, but I'm now coaching my first international game! :)

Back in CM2, I landed a job managing Northern Ireland. Since then, I've only landed an international job once...in CM00/01 managing Czech Republic. I lasted a year and a half, during which I had decided to resign from the club team I was managing (Stevenage Boro). They sacked me when the underachievers failed to qualify for the Euro Cup. It took me a while to land a new job after that. Apparently failed Czech national team managers aren't worth much. It was off to Serie C for me.

Well, the start of my international career was not very illustrious. 0-0 tie against Switzerland on my pitch.

My team outshot them 16-1, but their keeper stopped every shot, and our midfielders didn't play creatively enough.

I lucked into the Mexican job one year and made it to the Semi's before losing 1-0 in extra time. 2 years later, I found myself the head of the English national team where I won the WC and then 3 years later, I took over Brazil and lost in the Championship. That was all while managing Sunderland.

Try taking a real team, like Ourense to the top, or even the middle, or even last a season. That I'd respect. ;)

I have taken Tamworth from the dregs of the Conference to the EPL. The funnest part? I actually won the FA Cup in my championship First Division year, so the same season I first got to the EPL, I was also already in the UEFA. :)

That is always a fun bonus. Great work there, but Tamworth is a cakewalk next to Ourense. ;)

Straight shot, although I have used some borrowed tactics which makes it not as thrilling an accomplishment. I am working on developing my own, but I am still learning some things. I like to think that my acquisition of my type of players has also had a big hand int he club's success.

Conference was a runaway. Third Division I just managed to eek out of having to be in the playoff, finishing in third because Lincoln lost a home match it shouldn't have. Second Division was the toughest and represented a mid-stream tactical switch for me. I was in the middle of the pack halfway through the year when I finally found a tactic that seemed to fit my players (a variation on the diablo tactic). It enabled me to make a run at the end and just get intot he playoff in seventh place. Then I won throught he playoffs to get to the First Division.

In the First Division, I started off strong, fell off badly by December, made a tactical adjustment all my own, and then my team came back and eventually won the First Division going away. I also made the adjustment just in time to make a run in the FA Cup, where I was fortuntae to play D2 or lower clubs the first three rounds I played. I didn't meet a quality opponent until the quarters against Man City, and by then, I was really rolling in the First Division. Toughest match was against Newcastle in the semis. I barely escaped that one with a 4-2 win that was much closer than that (we scored three goals in the last 20 minutes, and escaped some greta chances by Newcastle--Ameobi scares the crap out of me...). The FA Cup final was kinda anticlimactic, since we were facing fellow D1 Crystal Palace, a middle-table squad. It was the first time a D1 team made the Cup since real life, sometime in the late 90s, and I didn't go back far enough to see the last time two D1 teams faced off there.

The odd thing? My board kept refusing to expand the damn stadium! They wouldn't do it until we reached the EPL. I am talking 4000 or so. Ugh. We are now adding 2500 or so, but that's still probably as much as one-fourth of the next smallest stade in the EPL.

If anyone has had an expansion, I have a question. I have reached and passed the date of the completyed expansion, but I am still drawing at the lower level (actually, even lower, as the expansion has deprived me of some of my original seats for the duration of the construction). Will I have to wait until the end of the current season for the stadium capacity to upgrade to the new seating? Seems odd to set a December completion date for an expansion, but not have it take immediate effect.

BTW, I am currently battling Man U atop the EPL after bringing in a lot of help, and I have won through to the quarters of the League Cup and through two rounds of the UEFA (no qualifying needed for me).

Now if only I could change the team name. The Lambs? Good Lord!

The topic of expansion bitterfies (it may not be a word but it should be!) me. After 30 plus years (in CM01/02, mind you), my board has promised me about 20 or so expansion. Not one of them have gone through. Damn the people protesting and blocking my expansion to Highbury! There are division two sides with bigger parks!

As an aside, will you guys ever consider giving us an option to move or some type of alternatives in such situation, Marc?

I can't speak to the issue of moving but if you are so inclined you can use an in game editor to uncap stadium size. It's fixed per each individual pitch.

Chief Rum, you likely already have the seats but didn't have the fans to fill them. This happens but it's not a drawback unless you need the money now, or are leaking money due to the new upkeep. Eventually you'll fill the seats assuming you stay up. :)

I noticed my expansion ( 16k seats ) didn't affect league matches at first but when I met Bayern in the Champs League all the seats were full. :) Now, I tend to use about 6k of those seats all the time and some of the other ten for big matches and all of them for the HUGE matches. I wouldn't ask for another expansion until I was regularly filling all but 4 or so k of the seats. I don't need it.

CR, check the Information Tab on the top of your screen and it'll tell you the state of the expansion. If it's done, you'll just see the new number of seats. If it's still being worked on, you'll see that. If it's still the old number it's a bug. :)

Yeah, I have been looking at all that. It doesn't all quite fit, although I will certainly keep my eye out for a change.

I started with just over a 4,000-seater in Lamb Ground, and at the Conference level, it was actually bigger than all of the other stadiums. And the people came to see the team, too. I had the best attendance by some 400 fans, and pretty much sold the place out.

Not surprisingly, this pretty much stayed the same throughout my advancement. I could pretty much count on 4060-4090 for every single home game in D3, D2 and D1.

Now, having finally gotten the board to do an expansion, I am listed as adding some 2500 seats to be completed by December 7 of the current season (2007-08). I am now around Christmas, 2007, so I am well past the due date. Do they have deadline overruns programmed into the game? :)

The expansion causes you to lose some seats during construction, so I am at 3500 or so every match now. Since I have pretty much consistently drawn 4000 per match every season at every level prior to the expansion, I am pretty sure the problem I am now seeing is not due to a lack of interest on the part of Tamworth fans--especially since the attendance figures I am getting now are pretty much in line with the numbers I was drawing in the construction-reduced Lamb Ground I have been playing in all year so far.

I have been keeping an eye on the Information screen a lot for this. It still lists the expansion, with a completion date that is already past.

If it's still being worked on, the date hasn't changed and is past due by three weeks. If it was completed on time, how come I'm not getting the expansion in place?

I appreciate the help, but I think I have run into something odd here. :(

I don't want to go in and edit it (not to mention my concern about doing that), so I hope the game will kick itself out of this lurch and give me my expansion.

You're really going to need those seats to compete well at that level. I hope it sorts itself out soon.

The stadium capacity issue is one of the biggest I have with the game. While an expansion from 4000 to 6500 may be realistic for a team such as Tamworth if it is stuck in the lower reaches of the league, a jump to the Premiership IRL would cause them, one way or another, to play in a bigger ground. I really can't imagine a Premiership team playing in a stadium with a capacity of less than 10,000, and even that would seem to be pushing it.

No idea why it didnt' let you coach the first game of your international career? weid.
We have done a lot of work on international managment/news for FM2005 though so its looking even better at the moment.

That should be fixed for fm 2005 :)

While that is great news for FM 2005 (which I am already certain of getting), does this mean this is a known bug that I am pretty much screwed over? Am I going to have to edit it to increase it? And is this a one time thing, or will I have to edit it every time the board approves an increase?

No it should get processed eventually.. however there is no general knowing when when "it" will be. You could edit it only to find that it gets done the day anyway, or you could not enter it and it will take 5 years to process.
