I bought one of his games before I knew who he was.. (Wasn't big into usenet untill recently.) It *seemed* to be the answer to be my dreams, everything I wanted in a game... Untill I tried to play it. ;) Had a few bugs, nothing major. Went to his site to check on any patches and decided to check out his forums. Deleted the game and vowed never to purchase a damn thing even remotely associated with him ever again.

I really don't know much about the whole Derek Smart history, and certainly not enough to take sides, but I will say that I think it's unfair to judge the man on just that thread. That's jumping in to the middle of a long story, and you're only seeing a tiny fraction of the whole situation.

I have no idea how it got to be the way it is, but there definitely are a gang of posters that swarm all over the guy at any chance they get. Not accusing anyone here of such activity, but if you look around the web, you'll see the same people ripping him and his game at every opportunity. It's like a personal vendetta to destroy the man. It is fascinating that he has generated so much hatred that a certain core of people seem to devote incredible energy to hunting the guy and his games.

Whether that hatred is deserved or not is something I have no idea about. As can be seen in the linked thread, he definitely comes in swinging at times. I've often seen him reply to sincere criticism with what I would consider condescending, flippant replies. And no matter how much you get provoked, it really strikes me as unprofessional to reply the way he did in the linked thread. On the other hand, I've seen him answer countless questions on his game quickly and well, seen him give free copies of his game away numerous times over on Gone Gold, and seen him explain his thinking in elaborate, thoughtul posts.

I've no idea what to make of the whole thing, but it makes for good "car accident" watching.

Yep, because that's what Derek can't stand. He can attack, but he can only defend against those that attack with his style. If you jab him while seemingly keeping the high road, you just bug the ever-livin' shit out of him. Which was the whole point once I saw his first post.

Anything I can do to show how bad of a businessman he is to prevent people from buying his products, I'll do. As long as it's legal. :)

GoneGold is usually pretty strict about what you can post. But they'll let Derek get away with this shit time and time again because they want the "prestige" of DS posting over there.

GB, you are way too magnanimous. I've been watching this moron's Usenet rantings for a decade now, and he was this bad at the beginning.

Yes, they egg him on, and I'm sure some of them do it for fun. But it takes a certain type of maladjusted personality to not know when to quit.

What amazes me though is the degree and amount of rage that gets directed at him. Someone types "Derek Smart" somewhere on the net and within minutes a couple of dozen people with spittle flying are ripping him a new bunghole. It's hilarious.

Coming to the party late and reading some of the history from Sabotai's link, it strikes me that his "crimes" don't justify the "punishment" he gets today. Again, I realize I'm only seeing part of the picture, but why do people hate him so vehemently? Did he kill someone?

To be totally honest, though, going only by his actions over at Gone Gold and trying to be as impartial as possible, I have to feel sorry for the guy for what happens over there. Sure he's at fault for a lot of his responses and sure he comes off as a hardass at times, but it seems like there are a crew of people that spend too much time trying to destroy any thread he starts. In every thread I've seen him post over at GG, he gets baited and attacked almost immediately, usually by a handful of posters. I shake my head when I see him launch salvos right back about half the time, but man, the guy can't start a single thread without someone tyring to ruin it.

from my personal experience with him

well for the original (i think) battlecruiser game that was before 3000 basic story:

1-buy a game that looked great (he posted his own reviews for the game on usernet groups)

2-by advised that a patch is coming (beta patch is working great and takes care of alot of problems)

3-try in vain to get money back(you have been playing the game for a few weeks and now you want your money back?!)

4-try to find status of that beta patch or get a copy of it(told to buy newer version of the game)

i don't know the details of his life or anything but i would dehydrate before i bought a bottle of water from this freaking guy, he got me once, once!

LOL...yep, so true. Once on Usenet awhile back, I got accused of being a crony (or a sycophant I can't remember) for standing up and pointing out that the attackers were nearly as bad as Smart himself. Being an complete ass to someone who's already an ass doesn't make the other person more of an ass, or you less of one. :) or something like that.

After you've been here for several months and been in no flame wars that I am aware of, I began to assume this.

Of course, I would find it amusing if the real Derek Smart (as opposed to you, the pretend Derek Smart) showed up in this thread to defend himself. SkyDog would ban him in about 5 minutes, and well, I'd enjoy reading the transcripts of his testimony during the lawsuit.
