I've had an account with UltimateBet for about six months now, and I'm still playing on the $50 that I originally deposited. Three days ago, I deposited $50 at PartyPoker, and I am down to my last $6.50 there already. I'm sure most of us online poker players have heard about the massive number of fish at PartyPoker, and I was taking them for a while, but I've taken so many bad beats in the past 48 hours that I'm going nuts. I feel like an idiot for losing all this money so quickly, and although I could afford to spend the $50 (albeit barely), I understandably wish that I hadn't. I'm headed to Las Vegas next week, and that money could've been spent better, I suppose. Obviously, I can't do anything about it now (except try to win it back, though that will be difficult). I just needed to vent.

Feel for you, but 50 bucks in Vegas doesn't last long. I'll be there next week too.

Well, it's all gone. At least it's not the fastest that I've ever spent $50, but it's close. I still feel like an idiot.

That's partypoker for you...I think you'd have to beat half the people there over the head with a shovel to make them fold. On the one hand, this makes the pots larger than they should be, but it also means you've got six half-wits waiting to see the river and it's REAL hard to beat those odds.
I feel your pain, as I like to fancy myself an above-average online poker player (oxymoron I suppose), yet when I go look at my deposit history I see an awfol lot of $50 deposits, and nothing to show for it. I can deny it for 23 hours of the day, but the sad fact is I'm the fish.

We all go through runs of bad beats. I went from $50 down to single digit numbers at PokerStars (have since crawled back into the teens) after a series of NL single-table tourneys loses from bad beats.

its rough. I've dropped down to .5/1 to hone my full game skills back up, and quick $50 swings are not unusual at all. You'll win in the long run if you're a solid player, but 50 big bets is not a suprising or unusual loss unfortunately.
Don't feel like an idiot for it, it's part of a normal swing :) And Partypoker *is* full of fish, espicially at the low levels, and that does mean you'll win more, but when you lose, you'll lose with the better hand and its annoying.

It's not real hard to beat those odds. It's actually quite easy. It can sometimes be hard to beat those odds in the short term though. That's why if you are a winning poker player you need a sufficent bankroll to keep your head above water durng the downswings.
$50 is not nearly enough to ensure that even a solid winning player will not go broke in the Party .50/1 game. Even a good player can suffer 100 BB down swings in that game. The general rule of thumb if you are winning player is a 300 BB bankroll should be sufficent for survivng the swings. That means you should have atleast $300 to play with.
Dropping $50 doesn't on it's own mean you are a bad player. However I have also noticed that many people who consider themselves good players don't really know how to play in loose passive games. They fold way too much because that is what all the books say to do. However many of the books are geared towards mucher higher limit games. They too often let the cards they are holding dictate what their action is going to be rather than letting the size of the pot be the primary factor.

You went from a 5/10 6 max game down to .50/1??? Radii you could beat the Party 2/4 game with your eyes closed. I guess trying to get adjusted back to full games without risking much money is a good idea, but I don't think you would have much trouble even while you are getting readjusted beating the higher game.

Man, it is not this board's week. I got busted out of a Sit 'n Go at Stars when I had 99 and he had KJ. He called my raise pre-flop, flop comes out 8-3-3 and he calls my all-in (not sure why, we were about even in chips). Turn is a 3. River is a 3. His King wins.

Thanks for the compliment :)
My win rate at .5/1 is pathetically low so far(barely 1 BB/hr/table) and I have had to make a large number of adjustments from things like not valuing AT nearly as much in most circumstances to making sure I don't overvalue 78s from any position just because there ar emore opponents. I'm about ready to start moving up again, I definitely can't play a win rate of $3-4/hr when i'm sitting on the bankroll i'm at forever, but it took me a long time to get my confidence back after the beating I took at the higher limits.

dola.
I've actually had a good past weekend at stars. Playing the usual tight/aggressive at $1/2, I won $150 over three days. Not bad.
Of course, I won $45 in one hand, playing the part as a fish. While two guys were capping each other's raises with sets on the flop, I called down with a nut-flush draw, with two cards to show. I caught my flush on the river, all the while calling all the raises.
Needless to say, they were quite upset at me.

I"ve noticed on money games everyone tries to play like sam farha.. i remember one beat that was so bad.. even the guy who beat me apologized hah he just had so much invested in the hand he didn't want to let go... he had a offsuit 9 10 and ended up with a flush on the river.. which beat my straight draw.. ugh.. oh well :)

You can play however you want. If people want to use their money to stay in I have no problem with that. I get sick of all the crying when you get beat by someone not playing to what you consider to be by the book.

Well i'm not crying because of a bad beat.. its the nature of the beast.. but reraising with a 9 10 offsuit when you got nothing but a potential pair or flush off the river is way too bold for me :)

I have been making a relative killing at the No Limit $10 buy in games at paradise poker. Last night I ran my $4 buy in up to just over $11. I got to a hand where I had 56 suited at the big blind. The table folded to the button, who raised the minimum. Both me and the small blind called. The flop came 566. I bet $5 and the button reraises me...all in $15. I called him. He turns over a pair of nines, and I am thinking this is my biggest rake so far.
The turn was an Ace...The river a 9.
It took a second to sink in...then all the chips went over to his seat, confirming what I was calculating.
Not a bad beat in the traditional sense, but it took the wind out of my sails.

Finally broke down and put 50 bucks in at Party Poker. Ain't looking good so far. Early couple pots, and other than that, I've been burned badly.

No offense, but if $50 is causing such stress you might not be ready for Vegas....

Agree 100%. Of course a lot of people (probably including myself) don't know what they are doing and end up losing in the long run. But if you are playing by the book on a .50/$1 and fold on the small blind because you don't want to risk a quarter than maybe poker isn't for you. I look at it as instead of playing $5 a hand blackjack, I play $50 at party poker and don't fold on some hands I may fold at a 3/6 or 5/10 table. It is kind of fun to win with a 4-9 or 2-Q and then watch people bitch because the books say I should never play with those hands.

No offense taken. It wasn't really causing me so much stress because of the money. Besides, I'm going to Vegas expecting to lose everything I play. That won't be a big deal. I just didn't start on PartyPoker expecting to lose $50 in three days. I was spoiled by the fact that my $50 on UltimateBet has lasted for half a year. If I had known that playing my regular style of play would blow through my $50 that quickly at PartyPoker, I would've put the money into UltimateBet instead. It was just a surprise to me.

Sometimes, it'll triple you up in 3 days. Also, UltimateBet has a reputagteion for being much tighter(and having better players) than partypoker. I don't know if that's really true at .5/1 or not, but in general that's what I have always heard. A strategy that is correct at a UB table may well not be correct(or will at least need some adjusting) at a low limit partypoker table, and the correct strategy at a low limit party table could likely lead to a pretty wide variance.

After he left, someone else commented, "uhh... isn't Party much looser?"
We all had a laugh and then congratulated the winner with a "vnh"
BTW, I would've lost that hand had I stayed in and chased/caught my full house on the river.
