Of the games that I like to play - sports text sims and strategy - the players can be broken into two broad categories.

The Grand Strategist looks at the game as a whole and how best to win the game. He focuses on getting the best armies (or players) and letting the computer handle much of the tactical work.

The Tactician enjoys outmaneuvering his opponent. He feels that the best way to win the game is to win every important battle. As such, he'll never let the computer take control, preferring to move his armies or call his own plays.

To relate it to our favorite game, the Grand Strategist enjoys the player acquisition process most and rarely calls plays or changes the game plan. The Tactician worries less about his personnel since he controls as much of the game flow as he can stand.

I admit that I am a Grand Strategist and have been for several years. But which do you prefer?

Tactician--but with some GS thrown in.

I enjoy the gameplanning more than player acquisition.

I'd have to say I really enjoy both elements, although I'd lean more toward the Grand Strategist.

Tactics...and if that doesn't work, then turning out as many military units as possible to overwhelm the enemy.

Grand Strategist.

I view tactics as a tool to accomplish strategic goals, as might be expected of someone weaned on chess.

I've always found this interesting, ever since I learned about it in a class in college called War: Theory and Practice
