Jr Bremer
Jerry Stackhouse
Reece Gaines(very talented.. just had a bad luck injury wise and is fairly cheap)
and work out a deal with dallas and ny to take away a top salary.. since charlotte can release any player before start of the year and not take any sort of hit money wise.

Anthony Johnson
Qyntel Woods
Gerald Wallace
Eric Piatkowski
Brian Skinner (if he doesn't opt out)
Bo Outlaw or Lorenzon Wright (both decent big men who have fairly reasonable salaries)
Aleksander Povolivc
That's seven guys. They'll get a couple of picks to eat another couple of contracts. Throw in their own picks and they'll have plenty of guys to play.

what a pile of shit.
do they have to take anyone?
The Bobcats only get 66% of the cap, which is about 28-29million. They have to take at least 14 players. They can exceed the cap in selecting players from the expansion draft. They can also cut anyone they select without a cap hit.
Based on only having $29million. The Bobcats would have trouble selecting a Jones, Grant, Outlaw, Stackhouse, or Wright. The only way they take one of these players is if they are given a draft pick (current or future) with them or if they have a trade in place with another team were they would take on an expiring contract.
I think they will select young players like Qyntel Woods, Reece Gaines, and Aleksandar Pavlovic.

Brandon Hunter is the slam dunk of all slam dunks to get picked in this draft, along with Woods. I also think they'll take Jeff Trepagnier.
Some of the guys you mention are good performers for the price, but their ages make them very unlikely. Bo Outlaw is one of my favorite players. But, with an expansion team, it all about youth, so every minute he plays will stop a young guy from developing. I don't see them taking anyone over 26 or 27, unless they are being bribed to take a bad contract (i.e. Campbell).

They'll grab an older guy or two as role models. Let's be realistic, they know most of the guys they pick aren't going to be there when they finally do make the playoffs. They need a mentor or two for the young guys they'll pick up in both this draft and the real one. Outlaw would be a pretty good fit to do those things IMO.
Whattya think of Kiki? He looks good to me...
He's doing a great job. This year is the key year though. A ton of cap room to play with still. We need to add a couple of key parts.
Guaranteed contracts are a scourge.
No doubt about it.
Chucky Atkins overpaid for a backup, which he is on any good team. He also is an awful defender.
Outlaw is overpaid.

Chucky Atkins overpaid for a backup, which he is on any good team. He also is an awful defender.
Outlaw is overpaid.
Two things:
1) Atkins won't be on a good team were he to be picked by the Bobcats.
2) Outlaw only has two years remaining on his deal. Juwon Howard was paid 20+ million a year during his couple year stint in Denver. He was a good soldier and role model for the youngsters during his time here. Bo could do that for 1/4 of his contract.
The Bobcats only have a salary cap of 29million. Bo would take up about 1/6th of the cap. If I'm the Bobcats I take a lot of young players and if I do take high salary players in return I want a future pick from the club I'm taking them from.
MikeVic
06-20-2004, 08:31 PM
I'd think they should take a PG that isn't young. If you have a PG that can read the defense and distribute the ball to the young guys on the team, that improves the whole team.
I only wish the Raptors could get a PG that could do that. :( I don't think Jalen Rose or Alvin Williams are the answer.
Quickly looking through at other vetern point guards I see cheaper alternatives that could provide similar skills of Chucky Atkins. Also quickly looking through I noticed the contracts contain this past years salaries still so in looking at it Chucky would make 4.2 million next year.
On a side note if the Bobcats select a RFA they become an UFA.

Maybe so, but you need some veteran leadership somewhere. The cap of 29 million only lasts a year. It'll be up where everyone else is next year. Considering they will be a taking a ton of lower cost, young (under 4 year players), they will have room for a mid level (5 to 7 million) salary player this year.
I'm not saying it will be Bo Outlaw, but I do think it will be someone like him. (hard working energy guy who can help with coaching the kiddies at practice)

I believe there's already a deal in place for the Bobcats to take Jahidi White off Phoenix's hands for a first-rounder.
After him, I think Q. Woods, Troy Bell, Juan Dixon, and Gerald Wallace are locks.
The Knicks supposedly will give up Othella Harrington for a player that Charlotte would draft (maybe Fizer), and there's another deal I read about that involved Houston sending Piatkowski to some team, and that team returning the player (can't remember the team or player), both through Charlotte in the draft.
BTW, its sad to say this as a quasi-Knicks fan...but Memphis' unprotected list may have more talent than the entire Knicks roster.

Rumor here in Phoenix is that Charlotte will take Jahidi White off the Suns hands for a future first (probably the lottery protected one they have from Cleveland) and a few million. That will give the Suns over $16 mil with which to sign a FA this offseason (Kobe?).

...and there's another deal I read about that involved Houston sending Piatkowski to some team, and that team returning the player (can't remember the team or player), both through Charlotte in the draft.
This is from the New York Daily News:
Here's one on the table: Looking for a backup point guard, Houston gets Kevin Ollie from the Cavaliers via Charlotte, with the Rockets sending Eric Piatkowski through Charlotte to Cleveland. The Cavs signed Ollie to a $15 million deal last summer, then hardly played him. After making fewer three's than any other team (three per game) last season, the Cavs have identified long-distance shooting as one of their needs. Piatkowski will help in that area.

Dola -
Don't forget, after the draft Charlotte can waive any player taken and they would come off of their cap. They would only be responsible for the salaries to those players. So, Charlotte could draft a guy like Jahidi White, get $3 mil and a first from Phoenix, then waive White and his salary would not cost against the 2004 cap. They would be essentially buying a first round pick for a couple million. They could do the same with guys like Campbell and Laettner as well.

I think Charlotte would consider drafting Johnson if it were not for the fact that he can opt out his contract this year. He could then sign with any team but the Pacers. I'm guessing the most likely Pacer to get drafted is James Jones.

Whats interesting about the NBA's expansion draft (if what I read a couple months ago is correct) is the Bobcats can draft a person like Brian Grant or Eddie Jones, release him, and then his cap number is off Miami and Charlotte's books. It should be interesting to see what type of deals are done to get them to take some bad contracts.

Stackhouse is a stiff in a team enviorment.. however in a offense where he is the focal point.. he might be okay.. but i see your point.. but his salary isn't so bad that it wouldn't be worth the risk..
But honestly.. every single team is begging charlotte to take a salary off their hands.. for a future 1st rounder.. i bet charlotte ends up with 3+ 1st rounders the next 2 years.. plus their own

My guess on the 14 picks the Bobcats will make.
Boston
Brandon Hunter - $366,931 $620,046*
Cleveland
Jason Kapono - $366,931
Houston
Eric Piatkowski - $2,458,500 $2,704,350 $2,950,200
Indiana
James Jones - $366,931 $620,046
LA Clippers
Keyon Dooling - $2,256,444 $3,073,277
Memphis
Troy Bell - $1,285,440 $1,381,920 $1,478,280 $2,267,681 $3,186,092
New Jersey
Tamar Slay - $512,435
New Orleans
Courtney Alexander - $2,178,841 $3,013,338
New York
Cezary Trybanski - $1,600,000 $1,760,000
Orlando
Reece Gaines - $1,127,600 $1,212,200 $1,296,800 $1,987,994 $2,779,216
Phoenix
Jahidi White - $5,394,125 $5,884,500
Qyntel Woods - $1,053,720 $1,172,160 $1,867,250 $2,690,707
Sacramento
Gerald Wallace - $764,600 $1,377,045 $2,022,879
Utah
Aleksandar Pavlovic - $1,107,960 $1,191,000 $1,274,160 $1,962,206 $2,798,106
Then again, it leaves them horridly thin up front. The Bobcats look to probably take only guys on expiring/small contracts. I doubt they will win more than 15 games next season.

What about Jerome Williams? I don't know what he did in Chicago (who notices Bulls games) but I remember him in Detroit playing like a junkyard dog...

Nice player, horrible contract.

I have no problems with Jerome Williams style of play but yeah, he just has too big and too long of a contract. If I were a contender who was one "dirty" player away he would be a great fit but on this Bulls team, well, he doesn't bring us much value.

5.4 mil isn't a lot when you consider that Penny's making more than 13 mil.

5.4 is an awful lot for a spot starter/energy player. The Bobcats wouldnt select him because they wouldnt want him as a cap anchor for their early seasons. JYD would be a nice player making about 3 million dollars a year, on a 2-3 year contract.

dola,
Penny's contract is horrible, but he had knee injuries that disrupted his career. If healthy, its possible Penny could be worth 14 million a season.

If I'm Isiah Thomas, I propose to Charlotte that if they take Penny, Houston and Shannon Anderson off our hands (then cut them) we'll put up the cash to pay them. In return, give me Jerome Williams & Scott Pollard for Othella & a #1 in 2006. Maybe they take it, maybe they don't but it's worth a look. Maybe think about sending them an unwanted center too...

Actually most all that you suggest is illegal according to the CBA. The Knicks are just screwed for the next several years, a fact that their fans will have to accept. But honestly I doubt the Knicks would ever be under the cap, so contracts like Penny, etc, dont hurt you as much as you'd think.
You cant trade penny, but he doesnt keep you from spending your MLE in other words. Eventually when the Knicks big contracts start to expire, the Knicks will have nice pieces to trade away to teams opting to clear cap space.

I believe Elden Campbell is out there. And he will likely get selected if the Pistons are willing to pay the bobcats 3 million.

Actually its not illegal when dealing with the expansion draft. They can work out a deal for Charlotte to take a bad contract or 2, then release them. It won't count against anyone's books. However, they can only take 2 players from any 1 team, I believe.

I've heard alot about that scenario on the sports talk radio recently.
I think re-signing rasheed and okur are big things...however...i think alot of people dont give Okur his props.

Yup, he's destined to be the Ralph Sampson of this decade. People remember Ralph as an injury prone bust. They don't remember the run to the NBA finals he helped lead them to in his second year or the fact he was a 20+ 10+ guy right off. Like Penny, he lost those finals and was hurt a year later. Never recovered.

They can take 1 player from each team, and all the players they get in the draft can be cut without penalty to the cap. But theres no way the Knicks could send them the balance of Houston's contract, for instance, as the monetary limit is 3 million.

Basically the Key to the pistons Keeping Sheed and Okur is for Okur to take the 4.5 exception. Otherwise it gets pretty complicated to league rules(if Okur takes a contract offer from somewhere else.)

It's not like baseball where the Yankees can pay off all of Mondesi's contract in a trade. In the NBA, the most cash that can be included in any deal is $3million.
Since I don't see the Raptors on there... I remember seeing they will put up Alvin Williams, Milt Palacio, and someone else...
Lamond Murray is the other POS the Raps left unprotected.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Stackhouse or Laettner get taken, if only because they have school ties (UNC and Duke). After all, part of the deal is to sell tickets and what better way than to bring some local "heroes" home to help build the new franchise? It'll generate some buzz and headlines in the local newspapers, at least.

Laettner
NONONONONONONO
Well, it would save me from having to worry about having a favorite team in the NBA again, but dear god, just say no to Laettner.
Salary dumping aside, I think Charlotte should get Juan Dixon. What about Dan Dickau? Does he have any pro potential at all? It doesn't really seem like it.

One of the rumors here has Washington sending the $3 million and the #5 pick for Charlotte to take either Laettner or Stackhouse. That would preclude them taking Dixon.
Dickau is simply not an NBA player. Never will be. Besides, Woods is possibly the most talented young player in the expansion draft, and Omar Cook has a chance to be an NBA PG. I think there is very little chance they take Dickau.
I think that these kinds of arrangements will be pretty common, and that Charlotte will only be taking 5 or 6 of the 14 it must draft with the intent of carrying them on this year's roster.
Why aren't there any Lakers players here on this list ?

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Charlotte Bobcats were close to finalizing a trade Monday with the Los Angeles Clippers (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/teams/clippers) for a swap of first-round draft choices, giving the NBA's newest franchise a chance to select Dwight Howard or Emeka Okafor with the No. 2 overall pick.
Charlotte would send the No. 4 overall pick, along with a second-round pick (No. 33 overall), to Los Angeles for the No. 2 choice and the rights to center Predrag Drobnjak (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/players/3216), four league sources told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
The Bobcats have made no secret of their desire to obtain one of the first two choices in the draft, believing Okafor or Howard could be one of the main building blocks for the league's 30th franchise.
The Clippers are interested in selecting Peoria prep star Shaun Livingston with the fourth overall pick, believing the Chicago Bulls (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/teams/bulls) will pass on him at No. 3 because they would not want to use their lottery pick on a point guard for a third consecutive year.
Howard, a power forward, and Livingston, a point guard, are two of the top high school players available in Thursday night's draft.
The Orlando Magic (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/teams/magic) hold the first selection, and team officials say they remain undecided on whether to select Okafor or Howard. Orlando also is listening to trade offers, but if the Magic work out a trade it would most likely involve Tracy McGrady (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/nba/players/3179).
Charlotte will select 14 players from existing NBA rosters Tuesday night in the expansion draft, although the Bobcats expect to choose only two or three players who will end up on their opening night roster.
Bobcats coach Bernie Bickerstaff acknowledged Monday that the team has had extensive discussions with Orlando and the Clippers, saying Los Angeles was more receptive to doing a deal.
"That is something we have spoken about. There are obstacles to surmount," he said. "I can't speak to their end, we're working on it and we've done everything we can do."
Drobnjak, a three-year NBA veteran, averaged 6.3 points and 3.2 rebounds last season for the Clippers, who acquired him in a sign-and-trade deal with Seattle during training camp. He has one guaranteed season remaining on his contract for approximately $2.8 million.

I'm kind of surprised they took Primoz Brezec from Indiana... When Orlando said earlier that they were definately taking someone from the Pacers I figured for sure it would be Jones since he is a RFA.

One of the convoluted rules of the expansion draft was that any RFA selected by Charlotte would become a UFA.

Yeah.. I figured the only reason possible to take one of the exposed Pacers was as a "get out of salary free" card.
