This made me laugh for some reason. I hope Mike Ditka's restaurant is okay.

Made me laugh, too. Then again, most stuff at this time of night is funny.

I may be wrong but I thought that one of (if not the) worst earthquake in the lower US happend around the southern illinois region. I will have to search around for that Cliff Clavin'esque bit of info.

Look up "New Madrid fault" and that will have you well on your way. They don't happen very often there but when they do, look out.

I remember we had one in Detroit back in the early 80's, but I was pretty young and don't remember many of the details. Freaked a lot of people out, though.

Some people felt it here in Iowa City. I think it was 4.4 on the rector scale.

And the Earthquake your thinking of happened about 150 yrs ago. It was so powerful that it caused the Mississippi to flow backwards

i wonder when California will get it's big earthquake. kinda ironic that two of the biggest earthquakes in US history happened in like Missouri.

Not to include the faux pas earthquake that was supposed to hit in December 1990.

That didn't work out as planned, but I did get two days off of school. :)

Thanks for clarifying that. I knew I wasn't nuts.

This is not welcome news.

Uncle Tupelo - New Madrid

All my daydreams are disasters
She's the one I think I love
Rivers burn and then run backwards
For her, that's enough
They all come from New York City
And they woke me up at dawn
She walked with me to the fountain
And she held onto my arm
Come on, do what you did
Roll me under New Madrid
Shake my baby and please bring her back
'Cause death won't even be still
Caroms over the landfill
Buries us all in its broken back
There's a man of conviction
And although he's getting old
Mr. Browning has a prediction
And we've all been told
So come on back from New York City
Roll your trucks in at dawn
Walk with me to the fountain
And hold onto my arm
Come on, do what you did
Roll me under New Madrid
Shake my baby and please bring her back
'Cause death won't even be still
Caroms over the landfill
Buries us all in its broken back

I'm moving to lovely Springfield!

I'm glad to hear that many folks didn't notice it. I hope any natural disasters that occur while I live there will be similarly unnoticeable.

i'd be much more afraid of tornadoes and black ice (hi, AE) and snow than earthquakes in Illinois...

While on the topic of earthquakes, I have a good earthquake story. When I was a freshman in college at UCSB which is in southern California, we had a large earthquake and I lived on the 8th floor of a 10 story dorm. So, needless to say, the towers were rocking pretty good (I think the earthquake was in the low to mid 6s (I'm not quite sure however), but it was pretty strong. Well, it happened at like 2 in the morning so I was sound asleep. Well, when it hit and I woke up, I was freaking out because it was the first earthquake I had been in, and so I ran to my suitemates room, and my suitemate was on his bed, pretending it was a surfboard! He was riding the rolling of the towers on his bed! It was pretty unbelievable considering I was scared to death and he was messing around. I just wish I had a camera at that point.....

Don't worry, in that part of the country, you really only have to worry about tornadoes. :D

Funny, I thought the New Madrid fault was pretty much common knowledge, especially for those who live in that region.

Listen to Coast to Coast AM, you will know that in the future there will be a huge earthquake here that will widen the Mississippi River to something like a hundred miles wide, dividing the US. Not sure if the Illuminati or aliens have anything to do with it though.

I think it was 4.4 on the rector scale. I know this is just a misspelling, and I'm not making fun of you. But man, I find it a funny one. I suggest the following definition for the term:

The Rector Scale: the scale for measuring the amount of vibration caused in one's butt cheeks by a particularly expansive passing of gas.

Why not both?
