One other thing: Some readers are convinced that this site will fall under the ESPN Insider umbrella at some point. That's simply not happening. You will NEVER have to pay for a new column. If I wanted to charge people for columns, it would have happened three summers ago. The whole concept makes me uncomfortable. Let's say I have a bad week, and people are reading me and thinking, "Wait a second, I'm paying for this?" I can't imagine anything worse. Short of seeing another giant caricture of myself where I look like Damien Omen.

Let's say I have a bad week, and people are reading me and thinking, "Wait a second, I'm paying for this?" Apparently it's OK as long as the "people" are just his editors.

Either he's got some leverage that Rob Neyer didn't, or he's got bigger balls than Neyer.

Probably both.

Simmons is probably the most widely-read columnist on espn.com by far, and that gives him a ton of leverage. He could very easily take his gig elsewhere or go solo if he wanted to.
