Eatery offers 6-pound burger challenge
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
CLEARFIELD, Pa. -- People from New York and Ohio come to Denny's Beer Barrel Pub for a pretty big hamburger: 6 pounds of beef, one large onion, two whole tomatoes, a half a head of lettuce, 1 1/4 pounds of cheese, top and bottom buns, and a cup each of mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, relish, banana peppers and some pickles.
On Monday, the eatery hosted the Burger Challenge, which will be featured on TV's Food Network. The behemoth burger, known as Ye Olde 96er, and other large ones are featured on the menu for anyone daring enough to give it a try.
"We already had a 2- and 3-pound challenge, which I thought were awesome, but my daughter was going to Clarion University and she called and said 'Dad, I think somebody up here has a 4-pounder,' which is bigger than us and I said 'Oh yeah, well today we have a 6-pounder.' That's exactly how it was conceived," said Denny Leigey Sr., the restaurant's owner.
Those who try to tame the 6-pound hamburger have a time limit: They must do it in three hours or less.
Competitive eater Eric Badlands Booker has tried it three times. On his last try, he stayed at the restaurant for 7 1/2 hours and ate the entire burger.
Rachel Pittman, who works at Denny's, was the only woman competing this week.
"I'm probably not going to get the whole thing down, but I'm going to try to," Pittman said. "If I can get the meat down, I'll be happy."
I get sick just from LOOKING at the size of the burgers, and I'm a good eater! Holy heck!

Yes. Let's just have a contest to see who can eat themselves to death the fastest. That way at least it won't burn tax dollars.
Go Clarion, make a 10lb burger. Nothing else to do out there.

It's actually John Candy that did it in The Great Outdoors.
That's rather formidable.

You'd be surprised at how small some people who enter these eating constests are. That japanese guy who has the world record for eating hotdogs is not a big guy. There was a woman that won the Wing Bowl in Philly this year who weighed 99 pounds.

Not on the same level as this place.
My friend Clevo has a great story eating story that he told me.Here it is:
"But the Eagle deli in Boston (Brighton) has big food, with rewards such as getting your picture on the wall. The Godzilla burger is 1lb of beef and a lb of fries. You eat it, you get your pic on the wall.
They have bigger burgers, culminating in the Riley burger, which is 3 or 4 lbs of beef, and a caf tray full of fries, named for big eating champ, Sean Riley. Apparently he is the only one to eat the Riley burger. They also have a sandwich called the King kluck, 2 whole chicken breasts, bacon, and cheese w/ bbq sauce.
Porter, Me and Rusty went to get the Godzilla burger once. Porter had eaten Big Burrito and Fries earlier that evening. He was making all sorts of noise, about how they better have film in the camera and whatnot. He looked like he was going to die. He was mashing up the burger, adn he couldnt swallow any more, but he finished. He was an amazing shade of red when he was finished. I despise fries, but finished, and Rusty did it no problem. I think I have the picture somewhere."

Restaurant Says It Has World's Largest Burger
123-Pound Burger Costs $379
POSTED: 3:43 pm EST February 25, 2007
CLEARFIELD, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania restaurant thinks it has a winner. A Guinness World Record winner, that is.
Chefs at the Clearfield eatery said they've created the world's largest hamburger, all ready to order right off the menu.
Weighing in at 123 pounds, this giant burger features an 80-pound beef patty, a 30-pound bun, 12 tomatoes and 160 slices of cheese. Denny's Beer Barrel Pub also throws on a pound each of lettuce, ketchup, mustard and mayo -- and up to five onions.
The menu price for the Beer Barrel Main Event Charity Burger comes to $379.
The pub plans to submit paperwork to Guinness World Records this week.
The owner, Denny Leigey, said he came up with the idea of the giant burger through an "evolution of burgers."
"Starting with a 1/4 pound in 1977 and a friendly race with another eatery in Clearfield," he said. "1991 began the larger burgers a 2 pound and a 3 pound in 1993."
And, he said, the rest is history.

My company has a lot of coal mines up near Clearfield. I should get the company to pitch in and buy all the miners a burger... one really, really big burger.
