Ok, a guy I am helping out posted in this thread...

http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.php?showtopic=132547&hl=

Can anyone verify the info there as true? Can anyone add an opinion?

The big this is he is trying to make awebsite with VB (ala FOBL).

Up to $199 now? I remember back in they day when "it is free and will always be free" was the slogan used over there.

Forget about the $135 for installation and $300 for phone support with vBulletin. Most people do not need either of them.

If you know what you are doing, installing vBulletin is easy. The vBulletin website is great when it comes to support, and you can post on their forums for free.

As for the $30 for access to the members area, you don't need to keep this subscription current. Our subscription at FOFC has lapsed, but if a major upgrade is released we may well pay the $30 for another year of access.

VB has a ton of hacks you can add to it to make it do exactly what you want.

I have not used the more recent incarnations of IPB, so I can't say for certain how it stacks up with vB. What I *can* say is that there aren't enough words to express how much I love using vBulletin. It has been more than worth the now-$250 (thereabouts) I paid for it. If the money is not an issue, then there is no comparison (although if I am interpreting amdaily's post above correctly, IPB now costs as well?).

I don't feel like registering at IPB at the moment, so is there a summary of the information there that your friend is wondering about?

Also, fwiw (and this may just be an issue of semantics), the FOBL site is not *entirely* vB-based....just the forum (although there are php-nuke-type hacks that allow you to create an entire, modularized site based on vB's backend).
