What songs do you link with life events?

For example..

I was listening to Don McLean's "American Pie" when I got the first news flash about the events of September 11th. Can't ever listen to that song now.. I turn off the radio when it comes on.

U2's Beautiful Day will always be associated with the Patriots winning their first Super Bowl (and it got a lot of airplay after last super bowl too).. so that's a song that I'll always smile when I hear.

Not that you hear it much anymore (thank God) but I associate Cher - Life after Love with my cat getting run over when I was younger.
Went through a time two years ago of really tough funerals (not that any funeral isn't tough but these were particularly tragic) and after that certain organ music really brings back hard memories.

1. Daughter by Pearl Jam. At high school wrestling tournaments, they usually clear the gym immediately prior to the finals so they can re-charge the parents and fans. The finalists are left inside to begin warming up. The first time I made the finals of the tournament, Daughter was playing over the P.A. during this "warm-up" time. I always think about that when I hear that song.

2. Too many songs take me back to my senior year in college. We were too lazy to change the cd's in our 5 disc changer, so we'd get Radio Head, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, the Rolling Stones and Jimmy Buffet over and over again. Of those, Karma Police, Hurricane and Landslide particularly take me back to that dorm room.

3. I love you by Sarah Maclachlan. The song my wife and I danced to at our wedding.

Beautiful Day makes me think of the ESPN "Year In Review" package from 2001 (?)..... I can remember being in a hotel room on New Year's Day with tears flowing.... watching that package....

Whenever I hear "How's It Gonna Be" I think of that infamous spring of 1998 when my then wife moved to Mississippi to be with me while I went through technical training at Keesler. She played that song to make me feel bad for leaving for basic training. :(

Lightning Crashes? by Live was very popular right at the time I asked this girl out that I really liked. i sent her flowers just before I left with some busddies for a camping trip. The whole time I was thinking about her and what her reaction would be and that song kept playing.

Fastforward nine months and me and the same girl are parked in the middle of the night at a lookout point. So as I am asking her to marry me Janice Joplin is singing Another Little Piece of my heart over the radio. So that song is now linked.

Eagles greatest hist reminds me of the USAFAPrep. We were not allowed any music but we could have alarm clocks. My alarm clock had a tape player and my drill instructor didn't notice. The only tape I had was Eagles greates hits, so I played that over and over. After basic we were able to break out our music and every morning my bunkmate would wake us up to It Feels Good by the group Tony Tony Tony (I think). man I learned to hate that song.

"Red Dragon Tattoo" by Fountains of Wayne reminds me of an entire summer spent with a girl I was (at the time) deeply in love with. We listened to that album about 100 times in a few months, it was pretty much the soundtrack for our summer, and that one song in particular defines it all.

It didn't really end too well though.

"Centerfold" takes me back to skiiing when I was younger. It was blaring over the loudspeakers quite often at the little crappy local place where I used to go to alot of times with my dad and friends.

Anything Celine Dion brings up painful memories of the night before my father passed away 4 years ago. He had gone into the hospital the day before and I kept getting updates from my mom over the phone on and off during the night. That kept me awake and even more sensitive to other things, such as someone in one of the units behind us having freaking Celine Dion playing loudly (it seemed even louder under the circumstances as I probably wouldn't have noticed it any other day). As if someone needs more reason to hate her songs.
