Just saw on CNN.com. McGreevey is resigning due to a homosexual extramaritial affair being revealed!
WOW... this had been rumored for YEARS, and the GOP 'dirty agents' were planning to try to spread the rumor. Guess it wasn't just a rumor after all. And I thought they were all nuts at the time (I was Prez of the College Republicans at Rutgers).

Sexual favors for more spending at Rutgers? ;)
I wonder did this merit a resignation? Maybe the party bosses said with his low popularity rating, this would just kill him, and he should resign and give the Dems a chance of winning in the governor's race next year (I think it is).

Same, General Mike, but is him leaving because he is gay the way we want him to get gone? I'd like it better if he were busted for corruption charges. Now he becomes somewhat of a martyr and will be held up as a man who was forced out because of bias against homosexuals when the reality may be that someone may have been holding the goods on his corruption and blackmailed him out of office (just my conspiracy theory of the day :)).

I would say the "affair" angle is the reason for resigning, and that the gayness is secondary.
But since he decided to make that a public issue, people will certainly take your point of view. It's an interesting situation.

Because we know, of course, that any public official who had an "affair" exposed would immediately resign in disgrace.

I heard on the radio (ok Hannity) that there is a sexual harrassment lawsuit about to be filed by a male McGreevey staffer, and that was most likely the reason for his resignation. Has anyone else heard/read this? It sounded like Hannity was reading from an article, but I can't confirm either way.

if there is an impending lawsuit for sexual harassment, that is a different story- but I cant honestly believe it would be the same thing if the guy had an affair with a woman.

I would agree, but I think he didn't want his sexuality on trial. I think if had stuck it out then it would had worked out in the end. Marv Albert is a prime example of that.

As ISid posted above, this has been heavily rumored for a while. It will be interesting to see what comes of this potential lawsuit, and after that shoe drops, if any other crap rains on him.

Here's a question - why is his resignation effective in November? Why not now? Is he in the middle of a big project or something?
ISiddiqui
08-12-2004, 05:37 PM
Well, one thing I heard was if McGreevey resigned before Sept 14, state law requires a special election for Governor on Nov 2nd. If he waits until November he stops that. A special election on the 2nd would be disasterous for the Dems, whoever is nominated.

My guess? From CNN:
"His resignation will take effect November 15, and State Senate President Richard Codey, a fellow Democrat, will serve the the remainder of his term, which ends in January 2006.
If McGreevey's resignation had taken effect before September 15, state law would have required a special gubernatorial election on November 2"
Delaying the resignation prevents a new election, which keeps a democrat in office.
*EDIT: See...Rutgers people are too fast :).

No, of course not - and I didn't mean to imply that. I'm saying that this would likely be the excuse provided by both McGreevey and gay-hating opposition.
I have no doubt that being gay probably had a MAJOR influence on his decision to resign.

I got some info from a friend in the Dems who said that the guy he had the affair with asked for 5 million dollars to go away. He also said that this is being reported in some local media.

From Nealz Nuze this morning:
THE GAY GOVERNOR
http://boortz.com/images/mcgreevey.jpgA shocking announcement, to be sure. New Jersey's Democrat Governor James McGreevey announced yesterday that he is going to resign. Reason: He had an extramarital affair ... with a man. This brings to mind one of the best political quotes of all time -- Louisiana's Edwin Edwards telling the media that the only way he could lose an election was to be found in bed with a dead girl or a live boy.
McGreevey is married with two children. One can only imagine the pain this is causing his family. I was so impressed by his wife standing beside him during this announcement. I've heard pundits over the past day wondering how she could do that. Have you considered the possibility that she may love him, and that she wants to show that love and support during a tough time?
This is sure going to bring some of the "I hate homosexuals" crowd out of the closet. I'll just take this opportunity to remind you that scientific studies have shown that men who have no animosity toward or fear of homosexuals are more secure in their masculinity than are men who try to showcase their manhood with expressions of hatred toward gays.
McGreevey says he is resigning because his secret leaves the governor's office vulnerable. It may turn out that he was, in effect, being blackmailed by someone with whom he had had a sexual relationship. If that is the case, may that person suffer ten times the pain and anguish being suffered by James McGreevey. We may also learn that McGreevey handed over an important and sensitive government position to someone with whom he had or hoped to have a sexual relationship. If that's the case, then his resignation was the right thing to do.

Everything in politics is dirty. I remember a few years ago when I lived in GA, these 3 democrats changed parties like the day after they were elected to the state senate, giving the republicans control. They were in heavily democratic areas and never would've won as republicans. Although they did make the Creative Loafing's "Weekly Scalawag" section.
McGreevey would've been an idiot to resign effective immediately and give away his party's "advantage" or whatever. As long as they don't bring Whitman back, I could care less.
Don't you just love politics mixed with sex?Ask Monica !

Here is the thread to the MSNBC article on the story. If there is any truth to it, the resignation is a result of corruption coverup and the gay affair was a convenient excuse.

I was actually disgusted by his wife standing by him. How much of a dormat can a woman be? This man lied, cheated and destroyed her family. And she's ok with that? Ok enough to stand side by side and defend him? This man lied to her, broke his most sacred promises to her, and she's going to give him a pass because she loves him? That's an excellent message to teach their daughter. "It's ok honey, a man can do anything to you as long as you love him." Truly dissapointing. I'm ashamed she's a woman.
If Arlie pulled the same kind of stuff like this McGreevy guy, and cheated on me, I'd leave him and divorce him without a second thought. If he cheated on me with another man, I'd clean him out and leave him with nothing except a cardboard box to sleep in and a dirty pair of underwear. Marriage is the most sacred promise I will make in my lifetime, and I didn't make it so that my husband could honor that promise only when he felt like it.
