Glancing at the ESPN NFL page and seeing the copious amount of little orange squares, I get the feeling that this is the year that Insider really becomes necessary (as opposed to helpful) for anyone who wants to get ESPN's view of the NFL.

In which case, I'll stop getting ESPN's view of the NFL and spend more time on CNN-SI.

The same thing is happening all over that site. Coverage of events still remains pretty much the same, but most of the analysis requires Insider. At this point, the free baseball writers are Gammons, who writes - maybe - one column a week, Jayson Stark, who seems to have fallen in love with his Useless Information column, and Bob Klapisch, when you haven't had your fill of Yankees news. Oh, and Gary Miller's awful Clubhouse Confidential. I'm still waiting with breathless anticipation for him to spill the beans about what song motivates the A's clubhouse.
How much is Insider, anyway?

Not sure if the same deal still applies, but I got ESPN Insider for $39.95 for a 1 year subscription. They also threw in a year subscription to ESPN magazine (I know I know it sucks, but its worth glancing over for 10 minutes a week). At 3.33 a month, I think its a great deal. The ESPNLocal section is worth it alone. Very well organized newspaper articles around the country sorted by sport, subsorted by team.

Agreed. I've had it for years and I love it.

Yeah I've been visiting ESPN less and less because of the Insider menace, soon I'll never go there at all.

I could see why would feel this way. It's what I never go to the sportingnews.com or whatever the site is. It seems like you have to pay to read anything. I never go there. Sometimes I get it confused with sportsline.com, though.
