View Full Version : Help Name the Game…
Godzilla Blitz

I’m messing around with creating a gladiator/fighter managment text sim and am curious if some of the creative talent here has ideas regarding naming the name. Most of the obvious names (Gladiator, Pit Fighter, Coliseum, Gladius) have already been used in previous games, and so I’m looking for something different. Also, although I’ll base the initial game on ancient Rome, I’m hoping to add a “Fantasy” theme that brings in things like elves, orcs, etc., so I’d prefer the game name to not be too specifically pointed at ancient Roman gladiator fighting. I liked “Pit Fighter”, but that one is gone. I’m not against a Latin-based name. I somewhat liked “Invictus”, but that name is already taken as well.
Over in the game development thread, Sachmo came up with: Sand & Blood; Gladiator Mogul (um, this one probably won’t be my first choice); Those of us who are about to die; For Glory & Freedom; Blood for the Masses.
Any other ideas for a game name?

Blood Sands
(And the gladiators shifted nervously, knowing in just a few hours.. they too would take their place upon the Blood Sands of the Colosseum, and there to find Death or Glory...)

In cruore veritas est.
(Latin for "In blood/gore there is truth"). It's a play on the more common phrase In vino veritas est. ("In wine there is truth.")
Cruor (note the missing e if you are not using it as the objecty of "in") might make a better name all its own. It just means blood/gore.
Cruor et Veritas may also be pretty cool (Blood & Truth).

You all are too funny. ;) Thanks for all the ideas, though. I like a lot of them.
What do people think of Vir Bellum? (that would be "Man of War", no?).
Or Swords of Blood?
Although I like things like Strength and Glory, and Blood and Honor, ideally I think the name of the game should in someway give an indication of ancient man-to-man combat. "Beat Me with Your Sword" does a good job of this, but um, well, I don't think we'll use that one.

If you want to call it "Man of War", then call it "Man of War", not Vir Bellum.
Swords of Blood seems too eighth grade to me.
"Beat Me With Your Sword" would be good, if you could make it a good acronym, unfortunatelym BMWYS doesn't work well. People would buy that title.
Personally, I like "Blood for the Masses"
Another option might be "Pollice Verso" which means "Turned Thumb" indicating the crowd's participation in life and death decisions.

Thanks again for the additional comments...
Alf: Thanks for the link. Looks like a different design than I want to go, but I will take a look at it if I can get it to run. Might be some good ideas in there. Just picked up Gladius for the same reasons.
Albion: Thanks! Vir Belli rhymes to closely with "beer belly", so that one's now out. By the way, would "Libertas Morte" be death in freedom? Embarrasing to realize that nearly all my Latin grammar from high school is gone.
Have narrowed things down to the following for now...
Blood Soaked Sand
Cruor et Libertas (Latin for Bloodshed & Freedom?)
For Glory & Freedom
Sand & Blood
Freedom in Death
Libertas Morte (Latin for Freedom in Death?) or Libertas et Mortis
I think I'm leaning away from the general "liberty and freedom" theme though.
I like "arena", which I take it means sand in Latin, but the name is already taken, of course.

I'm getting good feedback on Libertas Morte, but I'm beginning to wonder if the correct Latin isn't Libertas per Mortem. Or Libertas ab Morte. Or Libertas in Morte.
Maybe Albion will show up tomorrow and display his expertise.

Ragone: Thanks! I'm familiar with "myrmidon", but most of the contexts that I have seen it used in are negative. From how I understand the word, myrmidons are loyal followers, which sounds good, but the nuance to the meaning is that they follow blindly, without thought or reflection on the morality of their actions. I've usually seen it used in reference to soldiers or political henchmen that do evil because their evil leader has commanded them to do it.
KeyserSoze: Thanks. I like them. Might be a bit long, though?

Although "Put on a Thong and Beat Me with Your Sword, Maximus Diccus!" came close to winning...
Libertas Morte (Freedom in Death), got the nod. Got good feedback on it from a bunch of people, and it seems to do everything I want it to do. Thanks for all the great brainstorming!
Ragone: Thanks for the link! You may be right: Myrmidon might have more of a positive edge to it for others than it does for me. In any case, I think it would have to drop out of the running because both the word and its history are Greek, and picking that for the name of a game set initially in the Roman empire would be a little bit off. Thank you, though, for taking the time to look that up. If there's ever a sequel that occurs in Greece, I think we've got a strong candidate.
Cap: Thanks!
