NO, THIS IS NOT ABOUT PORN STARS IN SPORTS LEAGUES
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone played in an adult sports league, or if you just see that as pathetic. I was thinking about playing in an adult soccer league here in town. I haven't played soccer in 3 years (competitively in 4), but I really miss it and want to play. There seems to be different groups based on age and skill. Mainly, I miss the competitve fire, plus, I think its a good way to meet people with similar interests and a good way to stay in decent shape (or in my case, get back into shape)
So I am wondering if anyone has played in a league before, and what your general impressions of them are. Is it a good way to get in shape and meet people? Did it do well to appease your competitive fire? Did you enjoy it? I'm not looking for glory, just for some fun and as a way to kill some time.

I'm not sure why it would be considered pathetic by anyone.

I wanted to play this year. I have never played soccer at any level and Conyers had a indoor rec league that was supposed be more for fun than anything. Anyway, I was out of town and my wife tried to sign me up. The person doing the registration said it was nearly full and she would get back to my wife. She called the next day and said they couldn't get me in, but that I should play on the "select" team and that I shoudn't have any trouble getting on. She must have gotten me mixed up with someone who has played before, but it affectively blackballed me from playing at a level I could play.
I play in an adult dodge ball league, its great.

First, I'm disappointed this thread isn't about porn star athletes or naked Olympians or something like that.
Second, I think, like any activity, it CAN be pathetic, but doesn't necessarily have to be.
Example... when I was single, mid-20's, I joined a co-ed softball league. I didn't take it seriously. It was just a way to meet people. Ok, chicks. But you get my point. Not entirely pathetic.
I also know guys that are in semi-pro leagues for baseball and football. They're usually guys that were competitive at a college level, but not quite pro material - but they love the game. Again, not entirely pathetic.
Then there's the guys in their all-male softball leagues. They take it pretty seriously (even though it's frickin' softball). They're usually late 20's through early 40's, not really that athletic, and spend a few nights a week away from their families pretending to be competitive and athletic before they go out drinking together. Generally, these are washed up frat boys, and, yes, they're extremely pathetic.
Just my two cents...

cool, so I have another 7 years to play (and Franklin's comments were pretty much my thoughts on the subject... eerily similar)

I should add that I think the softball thing is generally OK if you're younger and single... but like most things, when you get married and have kids, it's time to grow up and start spending that time with the family.

I play in the MABL...Mens Adult Baseball League, part of the MSBL hxxp://www.msblnational.com. Great baseball leagues and pretty competitive...in no way pathetic. They have tons of leagues in just about every state. I played in ATL and play in BOS now.

Adult sports leagues are not pathetic. However, there are plenty of pathetic people in adult sports leagues. Look forward to seeing lots of guys who think they're major league calibre and take things way too seriously. Often, they're kind enough to identify themselves in advance -- look for the guy who wears the number 69.
My experience has been that every team in an adult league has at least one guy who's just a complete dick. (And if you can't think of who that is on your team... well, maybe you should think about that equation.)

That's crap. As long as you don't go to extremes, there is nothing wrong with playing a team sport, even after your married and have kids.

I was sort of referring to the beer-swilling overgrown-frat-boy brand of softball, not team sports in general.

I think I speak for most of the board when I say that I would prefer that you spend your time with other pursuits.

Just had the first practice for the OG softball team the other day. Didn't win a single game last year, so hopefully we'll do better this season.
It's all about going out there and having a good time...

I love my softball league. It's mainly just for fun. We just won our first game last Sunday. In 2 seasons we're 1-12-1. But in our last 2 games we're 1-0-1!
We're peaking!
Anyway, it's great fun. After every game they give us a coupon for a free pitcher of beer at Jocks and Jills. So we go there to drown our sorrow/celebrate our victory.
Good times.

Its sad that I equate the word "Adult" with porn anymore.
My life is sports....I play hockey twice a week in the winter and once a week in the summer....i also dabble in slo-pitch during the summer.I would have a hard time giving it up.

I play in a men's basketball league, 3 softball leagues and a flag football league. The more 'pathetic' they are the more fun they are. The basketball league has way to many former D-I players and it's just not nearly as much fun as the lousy co-ed softball league I play in that doesn't even have umpires (the base coaches make the calls).
