Yeah, but all it will take is one gold from Liechtentstein to blow this whole ranking system out of the water :)

Do Austrailians view the Aborigines as humans, like the rest of the world yet? If so, you might want to re calculate those numbers. ;)

'Kuh, sad that even with this method GB are still doing poorly. If only we spent less money on our armed forces and more on sport like the Aussies then we could give you a run for your money. Oh well, theres always the Ashes to look forward too...;)

This is a bit misleading for larger countries. The limits on how many athletes can be sent will skew numbers. The US sends less athletes per capita than the Aussies I'm sure...

I think a more valuable piece of data would be medals per athlete sent...

If thats the case then Mongolia must be near the top of the table! I have no idea what they won their medal for but am afraid to find out in case it destroys the mystique that I self-created around it.

The Aussies almost always top this list.

Kosta, isn't Korea supposed to be listed as one country, they are playing together these Olympics. (Makes your source so much less reliable, I "love" the official Olympic stats providers, was the first companyI ever applied for a job with and are just as Dutch as the opening ceremonies DJ, DJ Tiesto.)

Netherlands 13th, just as we are in the "normal" medals table.

Is that proof that we're going on par with what we should and proof that the goverment is doing things right? The Dutch goverment is pro "Competing is not enough, prove to be top 8 of the world or you won't be supported". On one hand, it's fair, but in a country where people are paid for their job, not for their work, it's pretty contradictional. Still, when your country relies on the same three people as in Syndey (Pieter van den Hoogenband, Inge de Bruijn and Leontien Zijlaard-Van Moorsel) of which two will retire, where's the prove then?

We treat them ok if they are likely to be good at sport and win a medal...

That's right. The Olympics are like the Senate, but there's no House of Representatives counterpart.

Korea is marching together at the medal ceromonies, but they have been competing as seperate countries.

There is talk about competing as 1 nation in the 2008 games.

Can someone with free time take the countries and create a formula for success, maybe

(# of gold * 3) + (# of sliver * 2) + (# of bronze * 1) =

Exactly! I'm not complaining, I just think it should be considered when trying to make a "which country had the best performance" discussion.

I heard somewhere that if Russia hadn't lost all of it's former provinces, they'd have nearly 20 more medals than the US

Gold * 5 + Silver * 3 + Bronze * 1

Again, misleading...

if they had all of their former provinces, would all of the athletes that won medals even be there? For instance.. in some events there are say 8 people combined if you add the russians and the provinces... this would not happen if they were all one country..

we need to look at the whole picture here folks..

Yeah, its all one big world so in that sense we've all won lots of medals *goes off to hug a tree and look at clouds*

I heard somewhere that if Russia hadn't lost all of it's former provinces, they'd have nearly 20 more medals than the USOnly not having lost Ukraine and Belarus would have been enough.
But then, Soviet Union does not equal Russia, it's total crap to make such statements. (Not pointing to MrBug, pointing to the source of the statement.)

Why can't some countries quit with winning medals?
Please stop Hungary, Korea, GB, Romania and Greece.
The Dutch representation is dropping too fast on the tables! (maybe a 3 gold out of 17 medals efficiency hurts afterall.)

If England hadn't lost control of the Canada, the US and Australia, they'd be doing pretty well too. :D
