View Full Version : eLicense trouble is a PITA

It's that same old story that we've all seen/heard before ... for some reason, all of my eLicense products suddenly seem to be "unlicensed".
Which would be fine IF I had actually unlicensed them. But I haven't done jack to them in at least two months.
This time, unlike at least two previous occasions, running the little diagnostic program from the eLicense folks didn't fix the problem.
I assume, based on past experiences, that the company will reset my available licenses again & I'll just reinstall them & actually be able to play again.
My question here though is this: Has anybody ever figured out WTF causes this mess in the first place? If I'm doing something to cause it, I'll try to stop, but if it's just totally random ... damn.
This is starting to get a little ridiculous, and really starting to turn me off to buying anything else held hostage by an electronic licensing program that doesn't fucking work consistently.
So much for giving TEW a fresh look & another try this weekend I guess :(

Check in the services section in XP. Theres something in there that relates to eliscense, and if you turn it off then on, i think it works again. I dont have xp on this computer, so i cant be more specific.

Thanks TC, email on the way.
i was told the story that unlicensing happens when your computer gets shut down when not done in the proper manner

Before I even find out whether some things being tried work or not, I would very much like to publically thank TC Dale for his response & help with this.
My purpose for posting this thread here at FOFC was to vent a little frustration & hopefully find someone who knew the answer to the "why does this happen" question.
It never crossed my mind that anybody could/would be able to do anything about it before eLicense gets back to the office, presumably on Tuesday.
Shades of Marc Vaughn & "Old Reliable" Heavy Reign, this was truly service above & beyond the call of duty IMO.

If that's true, it's very much YMMV, because my laptop frequently shuts itself off without warning, and I have yet to have an FOF problem with licensing.

Same with me. I've been using e-license products for 4 years and have never one had one unlicense itself. And over that time my computers have been shut down the wrong way, especially when I had a windows 98 machine.

My TCY license has "expired" and the Viatech support has blown me off since last weekend. Pretty sweet.
Luckily, I found my CD version and was able to get it working.

This sucks ass.
Any clues on how you were able to get yours working, Swaggs?

The main reason I dont normally buy games online. The annoyance of having to call tech support to get a new license.

I have both the download and CD versions. I had gotten the CD as soon as it came out, hand copied down the order ID and name on it, and played it until I got bored. Then, when I got a new computer and tried to install it, I had written it down wrong (put a dash on the paper when I ran out of room) and couldn't get it working, so forgot about it for awhile.
Then I bought the download version when I "had" to play in June 2002 (recently looked at the receipt when I contact support) and everything was fine with it until I tried to fire it up a few weeks ago. The elicense in my control panel says that it had expired on on June 15, 2004. I figured I had just lost the license from changing computers and emailed the support and he said that he reset the password. But, I still couldn't get it to work on this, my other computer, or a friend's computer.
I emailed the support guy two Sundays ago, with a semi-stern email telling him that I hadn't been advised that the lincense would expire when I bought it and I would appreciate them fixing the problem soon so I could play. Last week I found the CD (have moved a couple times since I played it) and asked what the proper format was for the ID and name on here, and got it working.
Still haven't heard back from Viatech. I'm fairly pissed off about it and their lack of customer support. It is a shame that pirates make security such a pain in the ass, considering at one point last week, I had two, paid-for, unworking copies due to licensing.
Although this is the first problem I have had with them, I will be hesitant to use Viatech again, although I almost certainly will if Jim's new game is exclusive to it.

I have the CD.
The problem is the game won't run without the elicense.

Seeing this thread bumped reminds me ... I never did hear back from the eLicense tech "support" people.
