Risk taking in Pre-Season

The Seahawks picked off the Vikings QB in the back of the end-zone. The defender thinks about it, then runs it out and is tackled at the 17 yard line. (actually, he fumbles it and the Seahawks recover at the 23).

In any event, the announcers jump on the guy saying Holmgren is not going to be happy with that decision.

I think, "It's pre-season, this dude is trying to make the team, shouldn't he take the chance to get noticed by trying to return it?"

But if the guy is dumb enough to run a pick out of the endzone instead of taking it at the 20, what else is the guy dumb enough to do? Coaches like to see guys make smart decisions -- that's how you make a football team.

Great that the guy tries hard -- but Leon Lett was trying hard when he tried to fall on the blocked kick against he Dolphins. Trying hard is not an excuse for being stupid.

Yeah, but if he had a seam at all, the risk/reward of attempting a return is worth the net loss of 3 yards of field position.
