Eastern Conference Quarter Final Preview

#1 Ottawa Senators vs. #8 NY Islanders

Key Additions
- Jeff O’neal
- Lyle Odelein
- Sergei Zholtok

Key Losses
- Shaun Van Allen
- Curtis Leschyshyn
- Anton Volchenkov
- Martin Prusek

Ottawa dominated the regular season, posting 52 wins….They were also 2nd in the league in penalty killing with a 89.6% success rate…..Patrik Lalime had a strong season in goal…2.11gaa, .910 sp……A balanced offense was led by 4 60 point scorers….Marian Hossa, Daniel Alferdsson, Martin Havlat, and Jeff O’neal….Zdeno Chara chipped in 40 points from the blueline…..They are the defending champs winning the 2004 Stanley Cup

http://img24.exs.cx/img24/2050/nyi.gif
Key Additions
- Alexander Daigle

Key Losses
- Alexander Karpovtsev
- Steve Webb

NY snuck into the playoffs by beating the Rangers and Boston in there last 2 games….They lack depth, and that will hurt against Ottawa….Yashin is the only legitimate forward on their 2nd line, that also features Jason Blake and Alex Daigle….6 20 goal scorers include the 3 2nd liners, plus Mark Parrish, Oleg Kvasha, and Mariusz Czerkawski…..Captain Michael Peca missed 6 weeks with a pulled groin, but is healthy now….Adrian Aucoin is day-to day, but should be back by game 3….Rick Dipietro will start, but isn’t ready to win a series by himself…..

Season Series: 3-1 Ottawa
Prediction: Ottawa in 4

#2 New Jersey Devils vs. #7 Buffalo Sabres

http://img79.exs.cx/img79/9799/njd.gif
Key Additions
- Andy Sutton
- Zach Parise

Key Losses
- David Hale
- Sean Brown

New Jersey hasn’t really made any changes in the last 2 seasons, and why would they….When your winning, there’s no reason too….Brodeur was amazing, winning 48 games, and losing just 18…..He’s the best goalie in hockey, hands down….Elias and Frieson both broke the 70 point plateau, but Brian Gionta broke out with 36 assists, and 58 points….Scott Niedermayer, a UFA soon, is a serious Norris candidate with 53 points and a 7.72 rating….Colin White had a season to remember….35 assists and 39 points in just 61 games….NJ is scoring goals…..Viktor Kozlov sprained his ACL, and isn’t due back for a month

http://img79.exs.cx/img79/4131/buf.gif
Key Additions
- Steve Staios
- Manny Legace
- Tomas Vokoun
- Mattias Weinhandl

Key Losses
- Mika Noronen
- Mike Grier
- Ryan Miller
- Jay McKee

Amazing goaltending depth has Many Legace playing in Rochester…..I really don’t know how Buffalo got here, but I’m sure they wont be here for long…..Daniel Briere led the team in scoring with 62 points, tied with Miroslav Satan….Weinhandl has blossomed with a career high 46 points….Tim Connolly has been terrible with 12 points and a -13….I don’t think anyone would touch him now….They have a lot of speed, and use it well….The D is anchored by Jeff Jillson, and that’s a huge problem…..Biron starts over Vokoun, which makes no sense, cuz Buffalo gave up a 1st rounder to get Tomas…..

Season Series: 4-0 NJ
Prediction: New Jersey in 4

#3 Tampa Bay Lightning vs. #6 Philadelphia Flyers

http://img79.exs.cx/img79/9848/tam.gif
Key Additions
- Todd Harvey
- Mark Recchi

Key Losses
- Andre Roy

Pretty much the same team that won the 03 Cup, except St. Louis and Lecavalier are much better….Martin St. Louis scored 61 times, which led the league, and finished with 112 points, which led the league….the only other player to finish with 100 points…..Lecavalier, who had 102…Freddy Modin, also finished with 90 points in 70 games…..That ofcourse, drives me CRAZY…..Mark Recchi was signed to a 1 year/5 mil deal when no one would touch him with a 10 foot pole…He has been unhappy at times, but looks like a solid addition on the 2nd line….Darryl Sydor had 45 points on the blueline….the team cant play D though, the Bulin Wall struggled with a gaa almost 3, and a 6.94 rating……lucky for them they can score…

http://img79.exs.cx/img79/7227/phi.gif
Key Additions
- Sasha Goc
- Phillipe Boucher

Key Losses
- Sean Burke
- Keith Priemeau
- Mark Recchi
- Craig Berube

They lost a lot of leadership in the UFA market, but not too much firepower…..The team is still good offensively…..4 players got 70 points….Roenick had 91….while Amonte, Gagne, and Kapanen all had 73…..John Leclair bounced back with a 28 goal season….Joni Pitkanen made GM’s around the league jealous with a 7 goal, 41 assist season….he also had a rating of 7.71, and could win the Norris at the age of 21…..Alexi Zhamnov litteraly fell off the map…in 82 games, the former 1st liner had 6 goals and 14 assists…That’s about 800,000 bucks a goal….Backup Antero Nittymaki was better then Robert Esche, which is a huge problem, as neither were any good at all this year….should be a very high scoring series

Season Series: 3-1 Tampa
Prediction: Philly in 7….

#4 Washington Capitals vs. #5 Toronto Maple Leafs

http://img79.exs.cx/img79/7239/was.gif
Key Additions
- Tom Fitzgerald
- Darius Kasparaitis
- Randy Robitialle
- David Vyborny
- Ryan Smyth
- Yevgeni Malkin
- Kimmo Timonen
- Richard Zednik
- Vaclav Prospal
- Slava Kozlov

Key Losses
- Maxime Ouellet
- Jared Aulin
- Kip Miller
- Adam Hall
- Shaone Morrison

After picking Malkin 1st overall, the Capitals made some major moves, and have been the most improved team in hockey….Prospal has been a point a game player sense coming over from Anaheim….Zednik looks like he did in 02-03…and Ryan Smyth is a great role model for Malkin….Malkin btw had 17 goals and 40 points in his rookie year….They don’t score a lot of goals, but do get scoring from everyone….There defense is almost like a no-name crew, featuring Brendan Witt, Marek Malik, Steve Eminger, and Darius Kasparaitis…..Olaf Kolzig was sharp in goal like always, and is capable of stealing a series for this young group…..

http://img79.exs.cx/img79/2170/tor.gif
Key Additions
- Brad Isbister
- Jason Allison
- Keith Carney
- Scott Thornton
- Sergei Fedorov

Key Losses
- Robert Reichel
- Mikael Renberg
- Tom Fitzgerald
- Trevor Kidd
- Karel Pilar
- Drake Berehowsky
- Ron Francis
- Matt Stajan

The Leafs have again proved they like older proven talent over young potential….That became evident when Toronto shipped Matt Stajan, who everyone in the league wanted to Anaheim for unhappy superstar Sergei Fedorov….Fedorov recorded 29 points in 24 games in Leaf land, and has been the best player in hockey…..Jason Allison has been stellar when not injured, with 52 points in 62 games….Owen Nolan, back from a 26 game suspension finished with 51 points in 52 games….Brad Isbister broke out with a career high 56 point season…Alex Mogilny led the team in scoring with 32 goals, and 64 points….Mats Sundin had his worst season, with just 55 points, but his scoring picked up with the addition of Fedorov….Carney has been a rock, with Ken Klee, while Caber and Leetch continue to click….Belfour and Tellqvist were solid in goal, but Eddie only played 47 games cuz of stamina and age issues….He will start everygame in the playoffs

Season Series: 3-1 Toronto
Prediction: Toronto in 6

- Glen Murray
- Brett Hedican
- Jon Klemm

Key Losses
- Marek Malik
- Martin Rucinsky
- Geoff Sanderson
- Mike Keane
- Brad May Johan Hedberg
- Jason King
- Bryan Allen

A lot of new faces brought in excellent results…..The Canucks were big winners in last summers UFA bringing in Glen Murray, who scored 41 goals, Mike Modano, who finished with 59 points, Michael Nylander, with 42 points, and Bret Hedican, who had 34 points from the blueline….Naslund, Morrison and Bertuzzi all scored 70+ points, and Ed Jovanoski distanced himself from his defensmen brethren with a 17 goal, 65 point season….Daniel Sedin also broke out with 30 goals, and 65 points…..Goaltending is ofcourse, shaky at best….Cloutier allowed only 2.33gaa, but had a 7.11 rating, and would not have won 37 games on a team without this much firepower……

http://img85.exs.cx/img85/4927/stl.gif
Key Additions
- Jiri Slegr
- Pasi Nurminen
- Steve Sullivan

Key Losses
- Al MacInnis
- Dallas Drake
- Alexander Khavanov
- Chris Osgood (Back in Detroit)

Snuck in despite winning just 1 of their last 5….This is a 1 line team,,,,Sullivan, Demitra, and Tkachuk, with Pronger, and Weight….Thats the team….If their going, they have a shot, if not, its over…..Youngster Peter Sejna came out of nowhere with 44 points…..The Goaltending is too week to beat Vancouver….Pasi Nurminen isn’t gonna get it done….Not much to say about these guys….I don’t know how they got here…..

Season Series: 2-1-1 St. Louis
Prediction: Vancouver in 4

- Shayne Corson
- Rob DiMaio
- Jon Klemm
- Ron Tugnutt
- Mike Modano
- Teppo Numminen
- Philippe Boucher
- Niko Kapanen

Dallas decided they want a whole new look and it worked…..New captain Sergei Zubov has the team in a great position…They didn’t score many goals, but added much need offense with the deadline trade for Sandis Ozolinsh…Only 3 players broke the 50 point barrier….Bill Guerin, Jere Lehtinen, and Jason Arnott….Team strength was defense…only Nik Sundstrom and Pierre Turgeon were minus players…Marty Turco had a great year….including 8 shutouts…..They are lucky the conference is down this year…. Valeri Bure is out for a month….

- Andreas Dackell
- Marc Savard
- Brian Rolston
- PJ Axelsson
- Mike LeClerc

Key Losses
- Tyson Nash
- Derek Morris
- Jeff Taffe
- Mike Comrie
- Brent Johnson

Young team is showing signs that there ready….Great deadline trades brought in Marc Savard and Brian Rolston, to vets who can help the kids….Shane Doan only had 55 points, but that’s cuz he’s got noone to really play with yet…Keith Ballard, David Tanabe, Paul Mara, and Brad Ference is a nice defensive group to build around….Brian Boucher is clearly the number 1 goale, posting 6 shutouts, a .918 sp, and 6 shutouts…Id be surprised if any team scores more then 2 goals a game….Shane Doan will miss the start of the series with injury

Season Series: 5-1 Phoenix
Prediction: Phoenix in 6

- Matthew Barnaby

Key Losses
- David Vyborny
- Brian Holzinger
- Manny Malholtra
- Marc Denis
- Todd Marchant

Brought in some very good additions which gave the core of this team what it need to succeed…..Rick Nash wasn’t the only thing opposing teams had to concentrate on anymore…The young trio of Nash, Zherdev, and Alexander Svitov combined 61 goals…..Erik Cole led the team with 28 tallies…..This team play’s great team defense….Morris is a great compliment to Klesla….There is a goaltender controversy though….Raycroft has been the stater, but Aebischer has been better…..They are the product of a weak division however…..Klesla is out a month, Raycroft will miss the series…….

http://img28.exs.cx/img28/6069/san1.gif
Key Additions
- Yannick Tremblay
- Teemu Selanne
- Steve Rucchin

- Evgeny Nabokov

Key Losses
- Todd Harvey

- Milan Michalek

Teemu returned, and though he wasn’t the Teemu of old, he still was 2nd in scoring with 50 points…..Youngsters Marleau, Korolyuk, Sturm, Ekman, Hannan, and Cheechoo carried this team….Anson Carter and Sergei Gonchar were brought in to improve the offense which has struggled….Scott Hannan had a career high 32 assists…..Evgeny Nabakov, dealt in 03-04 to Boston, was dealt back to SJ half way through the season….SJ had made Toskala the starter, but he wasn’t getting it done…..Hannan MAY miss the series…

Season Series: tied at 2
Prediction: San Jose in 5

#4 Colorado Avalanche vs. #5 Calgary Flames

- Kevin Weekes
- Andreas Johansson

Key Losses
- David Aebischer
- Phil Sauve
- Tommy Salo
- Teemu Selanne
- Andrei Nikolishin
- Ossi Vannanen
- Mathew Barnaby

The Avs are different in goal, but that’s about it…..Sakic is dominating with Kariya, Forsbergm Blake, Tanguay, Hejduk and Foote…..Thats quite a core group….Kariya is back with 88 points….Both Sakic and Kariya potted 40 goals….Hejduk has scored just 32 goals in the 2 seasons sense he hit 50….probably a case of too much talent, not enough ice time…..Kevin Weekes is no Patrick Roy, but he’s enough for these guys to win…..in the regular season….Adam Foote is out for the playooffs…

http://img28.exs.cx/img28/29/cgy.gif
Key Additions
- Jamie McKlennan
- David Hale
- Igor Ulanov
- Ray Whitney
- Nikos Dimitrakos
- J.S. Giguere

Key Losses
- Mikka Kipprusoff
- Craig Conroy, Dean McAmmond
- Chris Simon
- Mike Commodore (in a trade with Edmonton)

Mika was sent to the Rangers for David Hale, and Calgary went with Roman Turek as the starter for a month….then they got smart, and sent a 3rd rounder to Anaheim for JS Giguere…..Lucky Bastards….JS has been amazing, posting 1.72gaa in 34 games with his old club….They need a superstar goalie, as Iginla, who gets 39 goals, is the only one who is scoring….Ray Whitney is huge, as he can take some of the burden off Iginla, and has 20 points in his 27 games….Iginla is the only guy with more then 16 goals….Defensively, the team can compete….young center Eric Fortier has done a great job, as has David Hale, with a +28…..Robyn Regher missed 40 games with a partially torn MCL…Iginla, Reinprect, Warrener will all miss atleast 2 games to start the series….Gauthier is out for the playoffs

Season Series: 2-1-3 Calgary
Prediction: Colorado in 7 (only because of Giguere)

Ya, try it out with the patch...It has improved so much....They also increased scoring in Junior which is great....Sidney Crosby finished this season with 90 goals, and 91 assists, in just 70 games......I was keeping a close eye on him as a gauge on the junior league accuracy...Thumbs up for me

Eastern Conference Semi-Final

#1 Ottawa Senators vs. #5 Toronto Maple Leafs
http://img79.exs.cx/img79/2170/tor.gifhttp://img77.exs.cx/img77/4600/ott.gif
Key Matchup: Patrik Lalime vs. Ed Belfour
Lalime is a good regular season goalie….Ottawa’s offense carried the team to the cup last year, and if they want to win it again, it will have to do the same….Belfour has been fatigued during the playoffs, but that hasn’t stopped him from posting 1st round averages of 1.53gaa, .935 sp, and a rating of 7.33

Season Series: 6-0 Ottawa……OUCH
Eastern Conference Semi-Final

#2 New Jersey Devils vs. #3 Tampa Bay Lightning

Martin St. Louis and Vinny Lecavalier will lead a offense capable of 5 goals a game against the best goalie in the league….Maryt Brodeur has a 1.68 gaa, with a .906 sp and a rating of 7.60 in the 1st round….St. Louis scored 7 goals in Tampa’s 1st round win….

#2 Dallas Stars vs. #8 St. Louis Blues
http://img28.exs.cx/img28/6915/dal.gifhttp://img85.exs.cx/img85/4927/stl.gif
Key Matchup: Dallas’ effort, vs. St. Louis’ effort
Im not too impressed with either team, though St. Louis’ 1st round win was far more impressive then Dallas’….Still, I see these teams as fairly even, so I expect the winner will be whoever works harder

Season Series: Tied at 2

Western Conference Semi-Final
#3 Columbus Blue Jackets vs. #4 Colorado Avalanche

Key Matchup: Columbus’ unsung heroes vs. Colorado’s scrubs…
Both teams got big contributions from players that aren’t expected to contribute too much….Tyson Nash, Matthew Barnaby, Derrick Walser, and Jaroslav Balastik were Columbus’ top 5 scorers in the 1st round….Tomas Slovak, Andreas Johansson, and Chris Gratton were critical to Colorado’s comeback….although if the Avs’ big guns decide to play, this won’t matter much…

Good luck against the Senators!

Who is this Eric Fortier?

Johnny93g
09-12-2004, 02:53 PM
I figured Fortier was in Calgary's system...He was not...He wasnt drafted....picked up by Greensboro of the ECHL, scored 5 points in 4 games there....He was signed by San Antonio Rampage, Florida's AHL team to a AHL contract.....He didnt play well....and was released after 30 games....Calgary signed him, and he played 4 playoff games for the Flames that year.....In 04-05, Fortier was a rookie, playing center on the 3rd line, scoring 10 goals, assisting on 13 others, with a 7.36 rating.....He also scored 3 goals in the 7 game series against Colorado....He is a great looking kid, developing well, who I wouldnt mind picking up at some point for my squad....
