ST. GEORGE'S, Grenada — Hurricane Ivan pummeled Grenada, Barbados and other islands with its devastating winds and rains, causing at least 15 deaths, before setting a direct course for Jamaica, Cuba and the hurricane-weary southern United States.

The most powerful hurricane to hit the Caribbean in 10 years damaged 90 percent of the homes in Grenada and destroyed a 17th century stone prison that left criminals on the loose as looting erupted, officials said Wednesday.

Some escaped convicts included politicians jailed for 20 years for killings in a 1983 left-wing palace coup that led the United States to invade Grenada.

American medical students fearful of marauders armed themselves with knives and sticks.

Students there, mostly Americans, were arming themselves with knives, sticks and pepper spray against looters, said Sonya Lazarevic, 36, from New York City. "We don't feel safe," she said by telephone.

Right now it looks like South Florida is going to get it from the back end, which is going to be as bad or worse than a direct hit, because Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach would all get hit with the NE side of the storm (accordingly to current projections, anyway). It's not supposed to be even a Cat 4 by the time it hits FL, just a strong 3 (!), but this could be devastating. Some models still have it staying in the Gulf, so I've been forced to cut my trip to Alaska from 5 days to 2, just in case it heads toward the Panhandle.

Good luck to our SF friends, and also to the Carolinas, because it looks like it will slice through SF diagonally and head out into the Atlantic, and from there, possibly affect coastal areas north of Florida.

The latest projections at intellicast show it hitting (gulp) in the Charley impact area and moving NE through FL, in a more Northerly direction than Charley.

I love the "God is mad for the 2000 elections" thing. I've seen that several times, and it is funny. But questioning the amount of government money...do you really think the government ought to match losses dollar for dollar? I think you are forgetting that insurance companies are going to end up shelling out billions on claims on this.

Me too, especially since we've got a couple of neighborhoods around here that took a beating just from the leftover wind/rain (and you know how far away from Florida I am) Still fairly high percentage of people with no power here too.

If Ivan ends up dumping the same amount of leftovers on middle Georgia that Frances did, I'm wondering if there's going to be an oak tree left standing.

Yeah, we never lost power, but my neighbor had a tree fall across our road. Another 10-12 inches of rain and some strong sustained winds, and we are going to be in trouble.

Well, I'm just glad my sister has cancelled her weekend trip to Tampa (Friday-Monday), and also that the plane ticket is transferrable. She's pissed that she can't go, but its better than being stuck in that mess. Hopefully the hurricane goes somewhere else, but its looking like an impact somewhere in the U.S., so its not going to be pretty by any means. I'm glad I'm in Tornado Alley, not Hurricane areas.

I love my earthquakes. Going on 10 years since the Northridge one and that wasn't that bad. Going on 16 since the Whitter Narrows and that was kinda bad. But give me the rare earthquake over any other natural disaster

The 'punishment for the 2000 election' deal is amusing. Thinking politically for a moment, the parts of Florida that have taken the biggest beating so far are the lower, middle and NW sections, which are mostly populated by transplanted democratic yankees. If they all drown or move then the NW section, which is strongly republican and untouched by both storms, will win the state easily. Looks like god wants Bush to win. :D
