Prior to providing the offseason injury reports, I wanted to let you know what changes were planned for the upcoming year.

Offseason Injuries – The ZFL has always been billed as a very athletically demanding league even for players in peak physical condition. The wear and tear takes its toll over time. Some tweaking here will lead to older players getting injured more often than younger players, as the constant pounding and hard tackles catches up with players. This will lead to more injuries overall to players, although not a huge increase, again with more being sustained by the older players. This will not begin to take effect until the 2009 offseason so you have some minimal time to prepare.

Draft – The draft has been tweaked slightly, but probably not noticeably. The way revrew had it set up when he left seems like a good system.

Tie-breaker for league winner – This may never come up, but just in case, I thought it would be a good idea to have this clarified ahead of time. In order:

For a 2-way tie: Head-to-head, points allowed, points for, kicker duel.
For a 3-way tie: Points allowed, points for, kicker duel.

***In-season injuries*** - The most interesting and newest addition to the league (idea mentioned by revrew). Players can now get injured during the year. Some points on the new rule:

Injuries can run the entire gamut, from 1 week to 11 weeks long, from slight (most probable) to severe.
Since your typical ZFL player is tougher than their NFL counterpart, no player will ever take time off to heal the injury; however if a team has a bench player who ends up being a superior starter beacuse of the starter's injury, they will become the temporary starter.
While any player can get injured, older players have a greater likelihood of it.
Unlike off-season injuries, these injuries are temporary and will fully heal no later than after the season.
There are also rare instances where a player will play exceptionally well for a period of time, above and beyond their normal capabilities.

Write-ups – As you all know, my greatest frustration this season was with the time it took to produce the game reports. I don’t want there to be many days or even a week between game write-ups, as I’d rather post in the dynasty every couple of days at most. One thing I will change for the upcoming season is to post partially completed weeks instead of waiting for every game that week to be finished. If I can’t even do that, I’ll throw something else in there, I don’t know, maybe a preview of the ‘game of the week’ or some such.

This would be a great time to provide me with feedback if you have some other ideas on what you’d like to see in the game reports. Do you like them as they are? Would you rather see something like a recap you might read for a typical NFL game or just a game summary with highlights? More stats? Less stats? Longer? Shorter? In all honesty, I'm happy to report however the masses would like, so feel free to let me know what you would want so I can do that for you guys. It’s your league, I want you to enjoy it as much as possible.

That’s all. If you guys have any questions about the changes, ask away. I’ll have the off-season injury report in a couple of days.

Questions about in-season injuries:

1) Will the owner know how much the injured player degrades, like off-season injuries?

2) Is it a good idea to keep a free agent list of cut players / undrafted rookies to pick up to replace injured players?

Here's what I was thinking on your Q's:

1. The way I was going to do it was that you'd have an idea how severe the injury was based on the feedback from the game report itself ("It looks like that bruised quad might take a while to heal, but shouldn't limit his motion much." and "Sir Gary Coleman appeared to be moving normally today for the first time in a while."), and you'd also have some idea if a bench player ended up starting in their place.

2. I'm not sure that will be necessary. For one thing, no injury will be outrageously serious (for example, dropping a player from an A to an F, or even a D+) and the more severe injuries will be highly uncommon as well, meaning it would be unusual to need a replacement so badly to bring in a free agent (for many teams, even an injury to a starter wouldn't drag the bench player off the pine). I did think about expanding the bench, but for now I think we'll just see how this all plays out and we'll do that for the following season. Just to reiterate, no injury will ever cause a player to be unable to play, the only effect is a temporary reduction in their effectiveness.

Off-season Injuries

I have to preface the injury situation by saying this is one of the worst years for injuries I can remember since following the ZFL. Not for the amount of injuries (only 7), but for the severity (4 of the 7 being of the career-ending variety). Ouchie. And just to be clear again on this point, this was done using the same old system for injuries that has been used since the ZFL started (as far as I know, at least since this past season).

Albuquerque – The Isotopes were hit hard with injuries this off-season. OG Comic Book Guy, who had never lived up to his draft-day promise and struggled with weight problems, had reportedly ballooned up to 430 pounds a month after the season. Regardless, he filed his retirement papers amid his desire to return to his game and hobby store on a full-time basis. In worse news, Pro Bowl OLB Kearney sustained ligament damage to both knees during a bad skiing accident in the Alps. Doctors were amazed that he avoided an ACL tear and don’t think his career is over, but he certainly won’t be performing at his Pro Bowl level any longer.

Little Rock – No injuries to report.

El Paso – OG Eugene Chung saw the writing on the wall when the Busters drafted Lester Holmes and at age 38 decided not to fight the inevitable and called it a career. Holmes should be able to step in without much drop off.

Cincinnati – To add injury to the insult of this past season, MLB Fluffy Puff Marshmallow threw out his back during some routine yardwork. The surgical procedure was a success and there’s every possibility he will return to his previous form with time.

Birmingham – No injuries to report.

Los Angeles – DE Toby McGwire has, in the past, made no secret of his desire to one day play in the NFL. That chance came this year with the NFL expanding into Los Angeles for the 2009 season. The new ownership committee wanted a recognizable football face to the Los Angeles community to help draw fans and McGwire was considered the perfect fit for the team. A tough blow for the Stars, but GM Marmel should be praised for his foresight in drafting DE Bill Murray to cover for this loss. Murray, of course, has huge shoes to fill and there are concerns within the organization about his ability to be productive in the Stars’ defensive scheme.

Milwaukee – No injuries to report.

Knoxville – No injuries to report.

Chicago – Bad news for the dominating Eagles’ defensive backfield when it was determined after the season that CB Sean Sharper needed arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. There were some complications and Sharper will require some healing time before he can return to elite ZFL corner status.

Fargo – No injuries to report.

San Antonio – No injuries to report.

Portland – A very sad bit of news for the Sea Biscuits. Dear old Madame von Richthofen fell and broke her hip in her German abode. Knowing that she could no longer take care of herself, WR Manfred von Richthofen, being the dutiful son, immediately packed his bags and headed for the airport. As he arrived at the airport though, who would happen to be there but his brother, original Sea Biscuit OT Lothar von Richthofen. Lothar told Manfred that he was too valuable to the team and that he would go and take care of their ailing mother. After a bit of arguing, The Manchild agreed and had a heartfelt goodbye with his brother. We’ll have to see next year if Portland’s great offensive line can withstand the loss of one of its original and unheralded members.

Draft Preview

Overview: This year’s draft class has some top shelf talent, but the depth isn’t there at a number of positions so strike early or miss out. There are also a good number of players of which scouts have mixed opinions of. Chances are some of them could be the top picks in the draft, but there’s also the risk associated with the picks. Here is how a team of 5 ZFL analysts break down the draft:

QB: F “A horrible year for quarterbacks. There might not even be one drafted, unless a team is really really desperate."

HB: C- "One strong candidate with some impressive moves, but the other two are long shots to be drafted. Not a very impressive group overall."

FB: B "This grade is on the strength of the top player at this position. According to some scouts, one of the top fullbacks to ever come out in the ZFL draft. The other two are more forgettable."

WR: A- "A great group of wideouts this year, including three potential first rounders and potentially 5 total that will be drafted."

OT: B+ "One stud at the top of the board and a whole lot of depth behind him."

OG: C- “Mediocre class of guards. You’ve got a guy at the top who is a candidate for a second round pick, maybe a first, and another guy who could develop into a player. The other two are worthless."

DE: B "A deep position this year. The top guy is probably worth taking in the first and there’s some good lower round draft prospects as well."

DT: C+ "A couple of draftable guys, but no one who will star for you. A lot of horrible prospects after the first two come off the board."

MLB: B- "Solid but not spectacular. Mid-to-late round prospects abound."

OLB: A "A couple of superstars in the making here, and the dropoff is pretty steep afterwards."

SF: C- "Yawn. One guy who’s first round worthy and a couple of late round picks that could provide good depth, but no one who really makes you stand up and take notice."

CB: B "One good first round talent and decent depth overall."

K: C+ "Only two prospects, but the top kicker is one of the best kicking talents to come into the ZFL."

Portland wants a high draft pick. Those of you in the top 4ish, if you're willing to deal, let me know.

JAG
09-30-2004, 02:15 PM
QB:
QB Manos, Hand of Fate - PT, 23 “A 6’ 4” 215 lb prototypical-looking quarterback who is noted for his competitiveness, but nevertheless has poor arm strength and game management skills. A reach for late in the third round.

B. 23 “Beyond a reach. Too immobile and short.”

C. 21 “B’s younger brother. He inherited the same crappy genes.”

D. 22 “A former captain for his team, he exhibits excellent poise, intelligence, and leadership. Oh, did we mention his team was the UMBC chess club?”

RB:
Tompkins - CN, 22 “Not a can’t miss prospect, but E. is a shifty runner who hits the hole with authority. Goes down a little easily at times, but has great hands and rarely fumbles. Worthy of a late first / early second round pick.

Neptune - BH, 21 “While scouts love this player’s speed and strength, they are concerned that his small hands could lead to excessive fumbles. Not very accomplished at running outside. No better than a third.”

G. 23 “Potential to start…for a pee-wee squad.”

FB:
Thor - BH, 24 “An extraordinary prospect who showed tremendous versatility and strength. Incredible at run blocking, but also excels in rushing and receiving as a true triple threat. The most talented fullback to enter the league since Nymph. Some scouts question his motivation and work habits, while others think those scouts are crazy to have anything negative to say. A top 5 talent worthy of being taken #1 overall.”

I. 24 “Has the size to be an effective lead blocker, but doesn’t move well and has questionable heart. A third round pick for a team in desperate need of a fullback.”

J. 23 “I’d pick my sister over this guy for a pick-up game.”

WR:
Joel Tidwell - CH, 23 “Size, speed, and strength comparable to last year’s first wideout taken Population: Tire, but has good hands and is more humble. One of the top talents in the draft and should go early in the first.”

Little Mark Marmel - LR, 21 “Not as polished as K above, but has greater speed and is a real gym rat. His age may make him the better long term prospect if you have patience, but has aspects of his game which could use some refining. Should get picked in the first round.”

Sylvester Morris - EP, 21 “An above average route-runner with good height and strength, but lacks ideal speed which drops him a few notches. Still could develop into a top possession receiver and is worthy of an early second round pick or even a late first round pick.”

Spartan - BH, 20 “Very raw and could use some seasoning, but this receiver possesses excellent tools and with some good tutelage and time could be a top receiver for a club. For now, mid-to-late second rounder.”

Don Cheadle - LA, 22 “Impressive strength for a receiver, but the rest of his game needs refinement, especially route-running. Maybe late in the third.”

P. 21 “Had a strong year against Division III opponents, but scouts are unsure if he’s ready to take the next step. I’d shy away.”

Q. 23 “I admire his heart, but that’s about it.”

R. 23 “One of the most fundamentally unsound receivers ever seen in the ZFL draft. Good for a laugh and that’s about it.”

OT:
The Jorb - CN, 22 “6’ 7” and 350 pounds of lean muscle (well, mostly), this lineman allowed only one sack in three years as a starter for a top Division I school. Excellent technique and agility, good use of hands. He should be one of the top 5 picks in the first.”

Barrivendos the Conquerer - PT, 20 “A strong run blocker who lacks the lateral movement needed to excel in pass protection. Good second round prospect.”

Asa "Hellfish" Phelps - AQ, 21 “Opposite of the above. A finesse player who can be pushed around in the running game, but does well against speed rushers. Youth and upside should land him somewhere in the second round.”

Rick Hunter - SA, 22 “A two-year starter for a division II school. Never missed a game due to injury and uses good leverage. Strength is not where you’d like it to be. Late second.”

Escalade Jackson - KX, 22 “While he has the size (6’5”, 310lbs), coaches have had a hard time getting him motivated to make use of his talent. He’ll have to wait till the third round.”

I have patience - MW, 20 “Raw, untapped potential. Started his career as a DT and only last year made the switch to OT. Could eventually be solid, but do you have the patience? A project pick for the third.”

Y. 23 “Y is an apt name for this 270 pound pushover…as in Y did you declare for this draft?”

OG:
Pound Machine Redux - MW, 20 “Scouts can’t make up their mind on this stout but surprisingly nimble guard. Some say his quickness perfectly translates to the ZFL, while others think his footwork is shoddy. Some think his strength alone could win him a roster spot, while others think his playing strength isn’t up to his combine numbers. A top second round pick that could sneak into the first.”

Blockerboy - FG, 24 “A stopgap player due to less-than-ideal measureables. Third round pick, maybe even late second.”

Michael White - LR, 23 ”Too fat and too slow. He was fine in college, but partied too much and basically ate / drank himself out of a starting position. Only if you have a desperate need.”

CC. 23 “A great individual, but unfortunately with his ability, he will not be able to hack it in the ZFL.”

DE:
Pie Man - AQ, 20 “Exceptional strength for an end. Good speed and first step. Only downside is his lack of experience and a wide array of pass rush moves. But he is a top-shelf talent with room to grow that should go in the first.”

Ebenezer Ekuban - EP, 21 “A small school superstar who broke his team’s 18 year old sack record and recorded 68 tackles last year. Great burst and upside, but it will take him some time to adjust to the ZFL’s more powerful offensive linemen. A solid second round pick.”

Gary Sinise - LA, 23 “One of the smarter defensive linemen to come from college, a real student of the game. A definite overachiever, he has a nonstop motor and his knowledge of opponents’ tendencies gives him an edge over other ends. Still, he’s undersized and can be bullied by larger tackles and doesn’t have a quick first move. An interesting prospect in the second or early third.”

d. 23 “Another hard worker who’s even less physically impressive than c. He was able to get away with it in college, but the ZFL will eat him alive. Still, if you’re desperate, you could try him late in the third.”

e. 22 “And if you’re really desperate and missed the above guy, you could try this guy.”

f. 22 “I hear McDonalds is hiring.”

DT:
Mr. Goodballs - FG, 21 “A real space-eater in the middle of the line. Good technique and body control, but not a good pass rusher. A solid second round pick with good upside.”

Tim "No Wann" Bowens - MW, 23 “Another good plugger in the middle of the line, though not quite as stout as g. Scouts are torn on whether his size and lateral quickness makes up for his lapse in effort and at times judgment. With his talent, he should be taken in the second.”

i. 20 “Too young, too fat, too immobile.”

j. 20 “Uh, no.”

k. 22 “Apparently had his cake and ate it too. Many many times.”

MLB:
Marmel Jackson - KX, 21 “Not the brightest linebacker of the bunch, but good instincts and speed make him a great addition in the second round.”

Paddy O'Houlihan - LR, 22 “A punishing hitter who can get hung up on blockers. With better speed and slightly better play recognition he’d be a borderline first round candidate, but instead he’ll have to wait till the second round.”

Another Bust - AQ, 22 “Not very productive in school, but scouts think his frame and speed translates well to the ZFL’s wide open play. Still, risky to take before the late third.”

o. 20 “Looks good in a suit, but not a football uniform.”

OLB:
The Jesus - FG, 22 “An amazing physical specimen. Top notch speed can disrupt an entire offense and packs a wallop when he delivers the wood. Accomplished blitzer, can cover in space, and is a sure tackler. A top 5 pick who could be taken first overall.”

Eric Kumerow - EP, 23 “This player lacks the raw speed of p. above, but has excellent football smarts and might be a better run defender with his agility. Solid pass rush moves yet also excels at playing zone defense. No reason why he couldn’t be taken in the top 5 as well.”

Luke the Leprechaun - PT, 22 “Poor tackling technique often led to big runs by opponents, but does flash dominant ability at times. Worth a shot in the third, but not before then.”

s. 20 “He should’ve never come out. Immature, loses focus easily, and is too slow to make use of his impressive strength. Don’t waste your pick.”

t. 20 “A better chance to make it as Terry Tate than on a ZFL roster.”

S(afety):
Moonlight Jackson - KX, 23 “A big hitter with a knack for the big play who also at times gave them up. Has the speed to stay in coverage with top receivers and has outstanding hands for a safety. Looks to be a late first round pick.”

Not a robot - CN, 24 “Above average in most aspects of his game, but no really outstanding abilities. He’ll likely go in the third, though could possibly slip into the late second.”

w. 21 “Mediocre prospect who takes too many gambles and is sluggish at times. Late third?”

x. 22 “Kiper wouldn’t touch this guy with a tenth round pick.”

CB:
Kevin Bacon - LA, 21 “Excellent natural ability to cover. Very fluid in his movements which allows him to recover quickly and accelerate towards the ball. Sometimes looks a little raw and some scouts are down on his confidence after giving up a catch, but his 18 career INTs tells the story of his ability and could be a top ZFL corner. First round material.”

Twenty Mike-Mike - SA, 21 “Has upside due to his youth and good fundamentals. Might have trouble staying with speedy receivers, but otherwise is not a liability in coverage. Could develop into a solid starter and so is worthy of a second round pick.”

Booker Jarrett - CH, 23 “A mystery to scouts. Good measurables for a corner, doesn’t often get bullied by big receivers, but extremely erratic in his play. If you think the glass is half-full, this guy could be a third round steal. If you think the glass is half empty, you won’t be putting it to your lips.”

K:
Bubba Baker - CH, 20 “A kicker with extraordinary natural ability. Has been compared with Bruce Handily for his jack-of-all-trades mastery of strange contests. Is somewhat immature due to his youth, but that also means he has a lot of room to grow. A talent like this doesn’t come along very often…but as a kicker, it’s difficult to tell where he’ll be drafted.”

Sumo Madness - SA, 23, "This sumo wrestler decided to try his luck with the ZFL, but his lack of experience with the offensive and defensive lines have led teams to classify him as a kicker. If you need a stop gap he could be your man, but he’s no better than a third round pick."

Draft order is:

Round 1: FG(1), CN(2), EP(3), CH(4), BH (5), LR(6), MW(7), LA(8), KX(9), AQ(10), PT(11), 1EP(12)

Round 2: FG(13), CN(14), EP(15), CH(16), BH(17), LR(18), MW(19), LA(20), KX(21), AQ(22), PT (23), SA(24)

Round 3: FG(25), CN(26), 1SA(27), CH(28), BH(29), 2LA(30), MW(31), 2LR(32), KX(33), AQ(34), PT(35), SA(36)

KEY:
1 – EP has SA’s first round pick, SA has EP’s third round pick as part of a trade that sent QB Ryan Leaf and CB Bryant Westbrook from EP to SA.

2 - LA traded a third round pick in 2010 and their third round pick this year for LR's third round pick this year.

Good luck gentlemen.

Just to let everyone know, now that I'm not working on game writeups, I've returned to the task of compiling ZFL historical information. Mel Kiper’s first round analysis:

Fargo– Fargo surrendered more points than any ZFL team in history had last year. They also had an unfortunate misread on QB El Poopiehead, whom you may remember I absolutely guaranteed would bust and would be significantly worse than first overall pick QB Dan McGwire. But they have found their savior in OLB The Jesus. He is extremely quick, strong, mature, and can make plays all over the field that last year’s OLB Chris could only dream of making. A huge upgrade for the Fighting Crawfish and a step towards becoming a respectable defense.

Cincinatti – After his failures in evaluations last year, GM Shorty went for the safe choice at a position where talent has been lacking and age is creeping up on its best starter. OT The Jorb’s agility is remarkable for a man his size and his strength is as big as he is. The Jorb’s presence should give QB Mr. Shmallow more time to throw downfield and give a boost to the running game. I think it’s safe to say the Chaps have got themselves a player.

El Paso – An up-and-down round for El Paso. Draft rumors circulating prior to the draft had GM JeeberD coveting The Jesus, but Fargo had no intention of letting him go past the first pick. So JeeberD settled for his consolation prize of OLB Eric Kumerow. I personally wasn’t wowed by his play, despite the general consensus of ZFL scouts. A bit too stiff and at times plays a bit slow. Doesn’t look very natural on the field. An upgrade on Mike Croel, but we’ll have to wait for training camp to see how much of one. However, I like that he came back with WR Sylvester Morris, who gives McGwire a much more sure target than WR Marcus Nash and should speed McGwire’s development along as one of the most promising young QB’s in the league.

Chicago – No longer could the cries of QB Mike “Air” Marino go unheard as the Eagles selected the top wide receiver in the draft in WR Joel Tidwell. A smooth, fluid receiver in the mold of a Marvin Harrison but with a Terrell Owens’ strength. Well ok, not that good, but hey, a big improvement over the ancient Chad Spears. A great grab for Chicago and after years of languishing with poor receivers, Marino may finally have the firepower he needs to make ZFL defenses respect their passing game.

Birmingham – There was little doubt that if FB Thor was at the number five spot in the draft, that GM Tucker wouldn’t pass on him, having seen firsthand what a true impact player at fullback did for his squad. And yet, I have concerns that Thor does not have the same drive and passion that made Nymph so special. The tools are there, but is he ready mentally? I’m not sure he is or ever will be. But seeing as how the Olympian offense hasn’t been the same since Nymph departed, it’s hard to fault Birmingham for taking a chance on him.

Little Rock – WR Little Mark Marmel was an inspired grab by the Slick Willies. I actually had him rated ahead of Joel Tidwell due to his youth and considerable upside. LMM is a workaholic who burns to be considered the best, and with his already considerable talent he should be a force for years to come. Most observers were surprised that Little Rock went with offense when their defense had been up and down last year, but the selection was shrewd in that it allows Little Rock to line up two solid receivers to give defenses match-up problems.

Milwaukee – A need pick who might have been taken a little high, but was a good choice nonetheless. OG Pound Machine Redux is a powerful guard who plays with a real mean streak and always finishes off his blocks with authority. His toughness and youth will be a welcome injection for the soft Muscle Man interior line.

Los Angeles – The Star Crunch defense gets its first non-Sorvino cornerback in years. Bacon is a very natural corner and a fine athlete. I have concerns about his mental approach to the game, as he beats himself up over mistakes instead of forgetting about them. If it wasn’t for that, he would be considered one of the draft’s best talents, but as it is, I don’t feel strongly that he’ll be an impact player in the ZFL.

Knoxville – The Rednecks, needing more defensive stars on their squad, decided to pair CB Deion Jackson with their selection of S Moonlight Jackson. He’s an intimidating presence who is great at shadowing receivers and has good instincts for jumping receivers’ routes. He and Deion could well form the best secondary in the ZFL. Great pick by Knoxville.

Albuquerque – GM NevStar went for the best available talent in selecting DE Pie Man, but I feel the team would’ve been better served going a different direction. Pie Man is solid against the run, but he’s not a natural pass rusher and doesn't understand what he needs to do off the field to be successful. I don’t feel comfortable about this pick. At least Pie Man has youth going for him.

Portland – After the tragic loss of OT Lothar Richthofen, the Sea Biscuits struck quickly to bring in his replacement: OT Barrivendos the Conquerer. He’s a solid choice to replace Richthofen, as he gets great leverage off the snap and really drives his defensive end back. This should greatly help RB Lothar Dirtpounder on his outside runs. I think he’s an underrated pass blocker as well and at 20 years of age, will quickly pick up that aspect of his game. The great Portland line will continue its dominance with this selection.

Round 2: FG(13), CN(14), EP(15), CH(16), BH(17), LR(18), MW(19), LA(20), KX(21), AQ(22), PT (23), SA(24)

Update on the ZFL historical compiling project: I've made some good progress this week and there are about 1.5 seasons of info to go prior to completion. As part of the project, I'm going to throw out interesting league tidbits and stats every now and then. One of the first ones I'd like to provide is a list of kicker records by individuals and by teams (as per a query from this past season) and possibly a couple of trades from the past to see how they've turned out today.

Since I don't have that now, and I feel like posting something from the info I've gathered, here's a compiled list of team reocrds and winning percentages since the league inception:

Team Wins Losses Winning Percentage
SA 65 17 0.793
PT 58 24 0.707
AQ 57 25 0.695
KX 54 28 0.659
MW 46 36 0.561
BH 45 37 0.549
CH 41 41 0.500
LA 39 43 0.476
LR 21 61 0.256
EP 13 42 0.236
CN 9 46 0.164
FG 12 70 0.146

Close, but no cigar. If I recall correctly (I left the most up-to-date file at work), Portland has had 8 or so kicker games total (including, I believe, one to win its title against San Antonio), but Fargo has had fewer...I think around 6. But you're right, Jalisco has yet to enter a game for the Sea Biscuits. Maybe the Portland coach will try him out at fullback one of these years. :)

Sorry to have to tell you this, but the draft is going to be on hold for a little while. Marmel has informed me that he's stepping down as GM for the LA franchise so I'm going to have to find a new owner to take his place. :p on you, too.

Press release: The LA scouting staff believes Don Cheadle possesses some key intangibles that demanded he have an opportunity to compete in our training camp. Any third round pick is a dark horse as it is, but we felt Cheadle's upside was too significant to allow him to be picked right in front of us.

Fellow GMs note: (And if he's a bust, I'm going to have strong words with JAG about how he writes up draftee descriptions ;) ) Frankly, our #2 WR will be so bad this year, I needed to take a shot, and judging from the writeups, I didn't think there was another guy on the board worth a hill of spit. If Cheadle was taken ahead of us, it would have been a wasted pick anyways. What can I say? I draft on gut instinct. Besides, I won a Best Buy buck the other day, so you KNOW I have the "magic".

Mel Kiper’s second/third round analysis

Fargo:
OG Blockerboy
DT Mr. Goodballs

Adding Mr. Goodballs gives Fargo two impact defensive players from the draft at positions of weakness from last year. Mr. Goodballs' presence should help clear up some of the double-teams DT The Defense has been facing over the years and let him create the big plays Fargo's defense has been sorely missing. Blockerboy was not a highly regarded guard coming out of school, but he was the best guard left on the board for Fargo and should be an upgrade over the woefully unimpressive Largesmallboobs.

Cincinnati:
S Not a robot
RB Tompkins

Tompkins was a great pick at a need position for the Chaps, probably the best pick in the entire second round. He should be a big upgrade in terms of youth and ability at the Chaps’ RB position. S Not a robot was not a bad selection in terms of value, but isn’t likely to see much playing time in the near future.

El Paso:
DE Ebenezer Ekuban

Only one selection, but GM JeeberD wisely looked to help his struggling defense with the selection of Ekuban. Not a very sexy pick, but Ekuban could win a starting job and provide a little more push to an anemic Buster pass rush.

Chicago:
K Bubba Baker
CB Booker Jarrett

All of a sudden, kicker goes from being one of the team’s weak spots to a huge strength. Bubba could end up being one of the ZFL all-time greats at his position. One of the draft’s biggest surprises was CB Booker Jarrett, which shows the level of concern Chicago has for the injury in the offseason to stud CB Sean Sharper. Jarrett was a fine value pick, but considering some of Chicago’s other more desperate needs, his selection is one of the biggest upsets in the draft.

Birmingham:
WR Spartan
HB Neptune

In the draft, the Olympians were clearly looking to improve what was a mediocre offense last year by adding an infusion of skill players. While Thor could be a big upgrade for them, the other two will have to work to make an impact. Spartan looks like he could stick for the Olympians at WR, although only as a possession receiver, but Neptune was a bit of a stretch, even if there weren’t too many appealing third round options to choose from.

Los Angeles:
WR Don Cheadle
DE Gary Sinise

Lots of surprises here. Taking Gary Sinise was a slap in the face of Bill Murray who had been waiting in the wings, along with a vote of No Confidence, although Murray should still hold onto the starting spot. In addition, LA made a surprising trade to give up next year’s third round pick to move up two spots for a player many expected would still be on the board for them. However, the Stars were desperate with the aging Joe Pesci manning their second receiver position. This kid should be able to beat Pesci out easily.

Little Rock:
MLB Paddy O'Houlihan
OG Michael White

A fine finish to an impressive draft as Little Rock looks to the future with Michael White at guard, while Paddy O’Houlihan could provide immediate help at MLB.

Milwaukee:
OT I have patience
DT Tim "No Wann" Bowens

OT I have patience was a bit of a reach, but understandable considering the Muscle Men’s offensive line liabilities. DT Tim "No Wann" Bowens was a surprise pick with the Muscle Men needs in the offense, but in time could help bolster their already formidable defense.

Knoxville:
MLB Marmel Jackson
OT Escalade Jackson

Marmel Jackson is a perfect fit in the Knoxville defensive scheme and could provide immediate help. Escalade could be ok with some time. Pretty good selections by Knoxville.

Albuquerque:
MLB Another Bust
OT Asa "Hellfish" Phelps

Once again, GM NevStar takes aim at solid players who can fill need positions. Both of these choices were great value for where they were taken, especially “Hellfish”.

Portland:
QB Manos, Hand of Fate
OLB Luke the Leprechaun

Portland has given notice to two longtime players QB Paddy O’Leary and OLB Zoinks McAllister: shape up or ship out. The two draftees taken don’t look like they’ll provide much challenge, though keep an eye on Manos if he can pick up the offense quickly.

San Antonio:
K Sumo Madness
OT Rick Hunter
CB Twenty Mike-Mike

Mostly unimpressive haul, but when you’re on your way to a dynasty, how many starters can you find from the late second round on? Only CB Twenty Mike-Mike could challenge for a starting spot.

Passing fancy? ZFL teams may ‘pass’ on the run this year

Those who have been watching the ZFL in recent years have come to appreciate the smashmouth rushing attacks that have been prevalent throughout the league. Chicago and Portland have been providing ZFL fans years of punishing running attacks led by mammoth offensive lines and bruising running backs. And in years past, for a variety of reasons, teams have struggled to move the ball through the air. But the balance of offensive power in the league appears finally to be tilting back to the wide open attacks that harken back to the early days of the ZFL with pioneer quarterbacks Bullseye and Vincent Steele lighting up defenses. Ok, the ZFL hasn’t hired those old hands to pump up their passing games, but there is more than enough new blood to give ZFL aerial attacks a shot in the arm (outside of Knoxville and Albuquerque, of course, where their mighty passing games have long been a staple).

ZFL analysts who have been observing the league for years point to a number of trends that could result in an up-tick in passing totals across the league. There have been a number of injuries to prominent cornerbacks in recent years, including He’s Not JeeberD, The Blacksmith, and Sean Sharper to name a few. In addition, there are a large number of young quarterbacks who are just starting to come into their own as passers, Johnny Rotten and Dan McGwire prime among them. And finally, while a large number of talented receivers have come out for the ZFL draft over the past few years, the ranks of elite young cornerbacks have been much thinner.

The reason for the last point, explains former GM of the LA Stars Marmel, is that more of today’s youth don’t want to deal with the rigors of the ZFL. “Kids these days, the ones who used to come out as cornerbacks for us, are now playing point guard in the ZBA,” remarked Marmel of his own struggles to find an adequate replacement for former All-Pro cornerback Paul Sorvino.

We did a brief survey of a few different camps where teams are expected to have a dramatic improvement in their aerial attacks this year:

Chicago: For years, Mike Marino lobbied management to provide him with the tools to succeed, but the calls went unheeded in an effort to improve an aging defense. Things hit their lowest point a couple of years ago when the Eagles trotted out the unknown Jim Bob Jackson and the 34 year old Chat Spears at wide receiver. But over the past two drafts, the Eagles have added two wide receivers that can finally provide Marino with the targets he needs to get the passing game going. While Chicago won’t become Knoxville overnight, it’s expected that they will challenge ZFL secondaries a great deal more frequently than in the past.

Cincinnati: QB Mr. Shmallow has consistently been one of the ZFL’s hardest working quarterbacks, even if he wasn't the most talented of the bunch. Last year, with the emergence of WR Senor Cardgage as the lead receiver, his development took another step forward. Not wanting to see that work go to waste, Shmallow has been constantly nagging his receivers and putting extra work in with them over the offseason. In the words of Senor Cardgage: “That guy just wouldn’t let up. Ringing my doorbell at 4am so we could get some work in before practice, not letting me leave the practice field. He’s a serious workaholic.” That extra work looks like it paid off in the beginning of training camp, with Mr. Shmallow looking more poised and in control than in any previous year, while WRs Population: Tire and Senor Cardgage have been embarrassing their secondary. Or maybe it’s just the Chaps secondary…

Little Rock: It would be hard to say that prior to this year Little Rock’s air attack was punchless, but it was clear to most observers that WR Bruce Spinner would be a lot more effective with a better wideout on the other side than the creaky Carlton Bender. GM Swaggs heeded these words and plucked Little Mark Marmel in this years draft, who put up some highly impressive combine numbers, including his blazing 4.34 40 time. His speed should really open up the offense and lead to Johnny Rotten having a career year.

El Paso: We couldn’t fail to mention the team with one of the most highly touted rookies to enter the league in years, QB Dan McGwire. The rookie showed excellent poise in his opening campaign and made a number of plays with minimal help from his receivers. In his second year, he can expect to have a better connection with WR Rae Caruth. Add to that the selection of promising rookie receiver Sylvester Morris in the draft this year and there’s no reason not to expect McGwire to build off the success he had his rookie year.

First the ZHOF voting (that'll have to wait until Sunday / Monday as I'm off to the airport in 5 mins), then training camp reports (unknown, as I'll be off for the holidays starting Wednesday with only sporadic reporting)...but after the training camp reports, those rosters will be cranked out to everyone. I'm hoping to have everything started up for the new season no later than two weeks, give or take. I also have to figure out injuries you know...oh how I will be a hated man this season. :D

ZFL Hall of Fame

Welcome to the first annual ZFL Hall of Fame (ZHOF) voting. This exercise requires the voting of all teams. Remember, even if you don’t have someone up for nomination now, you probably will someday. This list will not be quite as large as you might think, despite the number of old-timers, because there are a number of players who didn’t play the requisite three seasons to be eligible for the list, and a lot of the stars, even from the old days, are still currently playing.

The ZHOF is a very exclusive list of the top ZFL players of all time. GMs may vote for one to three candidates per year and based on the results, one to three players will be added to this select group based on the criteria given below under eligibility rules.

That’s pretty much all there is to it. Go out there and vote!

GMs:
Must vote for no less than 1 player and no more than 3 players.

Eligibility Rules:

Must have played at least 3 seasons
Must not have played in the most recent season
Must garner at least 9 votes (75%) from owners or be the top vote-getter.

Candidates:
RB Antonio De La Tonio - PT: Two time first team All-Pro, one time second team All- Pro; from 2001-2003 lead the league in rushing TDs; lead the league in rushing yards in 2002, second in the league in rushing yards in 2001.

FB Samuel “The South will rise again” Jackson - KX: Two time first team All-Pro, one time second team All-Pro; one championship ring.

OT Lard Ass - SA: Three time first team All-Pro.

DT Ed Norton - LA: Four time first team All-Pro; one time Pro Bowl selection; led the league in sacks in 2001; one championship ring.

DE Jason Pepper – CH: Three time first team All-Pro; one time Pro Bowl selection; lead the league in sacks in 2003, third in the league in sacks in 2001; two championship rings.

WR Jet – SA: Two time first team All-Pro, two team second team All-Pro; in 2002 finished second in the league in receiving yards and TDs; in 2003 finished third in the league in receiving yards and TDs.

MLB Zach Urlacher – CH: One time first team All-Pro, one time second team All-Pro; two time Pro Bowl selection; two championship rings.

CB Paul Sorvino – LA: Three time first team All-Pro, two time second team All-Pro; one championship ring.

With 10 of the 12 GMs having voted, here's how the totals look:

Ed Norton - 10
Paul Sorvino - 5
Jason Pepper - 5
Lard Ass - 4
Antonio De La Tonio - 3
Zach Urlacher - 2
Samuel "The South Will Rise Again" Jackson - 1

Considering that even if the next closest candidates to Ed Norton received 2 votes, they would each be 2 shy of the 75% mark, and considering that Norton has 5 more votes than the nearest candidate (as well as over 75% no matter how rev and tucker vote), this year only one player will be selected and they will be the inaugural player in the Hall.

Please welcome DT Ed Norton. Congrats to you big guy.

While I agree Ed Norton was deserving, the snub of Antonio De La Tonio is an unforgivable blight on this initial HOF vote. The first true star of the ZFL, a rushing giant, De La Tonio deserved to be a first ballot selection. I should hope he is allowed a second opportunity and the ZFL GMs do right by The Itallion Stallion. I am utterly stunned that Antonio wasn't an automatic selection. (Yes, I know some will say 'it was his O-line,' but still. If Bart Starr is in the NFL HOF, then Antonio should be in the ZFL HOF.) Enough already.

For the record, LA would have voted:
Ed Norton
Antonio De La Tonio
Jason Pepper

Other commentary: Hard to overlook Lard Ass, what with all his hardware, but O-lineman may need to be something special (ala Flamebeard) to make the hall. Jet, IMO, didn't belong on this list--I thought he was a flash in the pan from SA's early days, and didn't make a lasting impression. Sorvino, I thought, though a consistent star, was a bit quiet, and it doesn't surprise me that he would slip off the list. As for Pepper/Urlacher, it seems clear to me an early Eagle defender needs to be in the hall, and I thought Pepper was more dominant and outstanding in his day.

JAG

I think what hurt De La Tonio is a combination of Portland's offensive line reputation (akin to Denver as far as churning out running backs) and that there were a number of notable running backs from the early days, Artemis, Robby "Action" Jackson, which appeared to have a similar reputation to De La Tonio (even if they didn't quite have his longevity).

But, this was only the first year of voting. While some of these guys may eventually just drop off this list, most players will have a number of years to get selected. For now at least, it's not like the NFL where there are a number of retiring players every year that are HOF worthy.

Speaking of that, I'll try to include some more stats, particularly defensive, in game writeups and end of year stats so there are some more quantitative measures of how well the players do. As I keep track of them, there'll be more information on the players so it'll be easier to measure one against another. At least, I'll try. :)

Thought that I would ask here before taking it to the masses, since I have been in the ZFL with you all for a long time now... :)

Are any of you interested in joining an OOTP6 baseball league?

The RWBL has been around since May 2002. We began with a major league roster set and have moved all the way to the 2016 season. One of our original owners, Raven from FOFC, is leaving due to time constraints, so we are going to have an opening. As we usually do, we are offering his team up to see if any from within the league would like it, so I'm not sure if the team will be his Oakland A's or another team yet, but we are looking for a good owner.

The league is stable (we have about 18 owners that have been in place for more than 10 seasons and have only replaced one owner in the past season before this vacancy). It is heavily FOFC and some of our owners are MapleLeafs, Hell Atlantic, Chief Rum, KCChief19, MrBug, Schmidty, Radii, Scarecrow, and many others. We have a pretty neat history built up, an active messageboard, and our owners do a lot of article writing.

Training Camp Reports (part one)

Fargo Headline: “'Fish no longer stink?” – After last year’s dreadful performance, which included yielding the most points in ZFL history, fans were hoping Fargo could only go up from here. And with the steady leadership of GM The Afoci, it appears the arrow could indeed finally be pointed up for the Fighting Crawfish franchise. Judging by how the players performed in training camp, it looks like the Fish will be starting an incredible SEVEN players from their past two drafts combined (recall Fargo having five picks in the 2008 draft and that’s 7 of 8 draftees from the past two years starting). Perhaps no pick will be as important to Fargo as first overall pick OLB The Jesus. The ‘Fish knew they had something special when on the kid’s first play from scrimmage, he blew past perennial All-Pro guard Ray without getting a finger laid on him and splattered HB Glutton for Punishment for a 2 yard loss. Some of the things this kid did could only be described as miraculous and he should be a tremendous upgrade for the Fargo defense. But the shrewd selections didn’t end there, as they added a nice compliment for DT The Defense with Mr. Goodballs and selected what appears to be the best guard entering the ZFL this year in choosing Blockerboy in the third round, who should be an improvement over the awful Largesmallboobs. If it wasn’t for QB El Poopiehead’s slow development, there would be even more reason for optimism, but Fargo should bounce back from last year to be a viable ZFL team for the 2009 sesaon.

Cincinnati Headline: “Chaps look to be ZFL Entertainment Capital!” – The Chaps had an awful defense last year, but at least it was masked by the even worse one trotted out by Fargo. Considering that Cincinnati once again has spent their early draft picks on offense, they will once again try to patch together a defense to hold back opposing ZFL units…but their likely failure to do so should lead to some high-scoring affairs. Fortunately, this year QB Mr. Shmallow looks up to the task with both wideouts looking solid in training camp and Shmallow showing very good chemistry with the two of them. Even better news is Shmallow may not have to take such a beating with solid rookie OT The Jorb protecting his blindside. The Jorb has done everything the Chaps could have wanted at the tackle position and is a solid upgrade to pair with one of the ZFL’s oldest players, 39 yr old OT The King of Town. But the curse of the Chaps has struck Cincinnati again as the projected starter at RB, second round pick Tomkins, has looked far more tentative than he did in his college days, probably due to the hard hitting from a ZFL defense (and wait until he plays against a real team’s D). Coaches simply don’t trust him to handle the ball right now and he’ll amazingly ride the pine in favor for the 35 yr old Bubs. With the declining 34 yr old Pom Pom manning the FB spot, the Chaps’ running game this year could be a bit too plodding to hurt most ZFL defenses. The only Chaps defensive pick, S Not a Robot, looks to be a good choice for where he was taken in the draft, but he didn’t show enough to beat out S It’s Dot Com! Although the talent level is improving, expect another tough year for Chaps' fans.

El Paso Headline: “McGwire looks to build on opening campaign.” – Buster fans observing their camp this year saw a young team on the rise with playmakers on both sides of the ball, including Brian Bosworth at MLB (watch out for him this year), Rashaan Salaam at FB, and especially their second year QB Dan McGwire. He looks like he’ll take his game to another level with the addition of first round pick WR Sylvester Morris, who grabbed every ball thrown near him and showed some nifty moves in the open field. Morris looks like a lock to take WR Marcus Nash’s starting position after Nash struggled with his route-running for a second straight training camp. On the other side of the ball, third overall pick OLB Eric Kumerow may have escaped the notice of fans with his play, but football observers were brimming with excitement over the rookie. Longtime scout for El Paso, Buster Greeves said of the rookie, “He hasn’t made a mistake all camp long. The kid has a real knack for always being in the right place. Once he gets more comfortable in the system and starts making big plays, he’s going to be a dominant player for years to come.” DE Ebenezer Ekuban had a good training camp fight for a starting spot, but coaches decided he was a little light and wet behind the years to put in as a starter this year. It’s likely he’ll hit the field after an offseason of weight-lifting. One final observation from veteran scouts and observers: the offensive and defensive lines for El Paso do not look impressive this year and could bog down both sides of the ball.

Chicago Headline: "Chicago's offense finally regains its balance.” – Undoubtedly the biggest story coming out of Chicago’s training camp this year is the presence of first round draft choice WR Joel Tidwell, the first receiver taken in this year's draft, and what he’s done to shake up Chicago’s offense. Tidwell has caught everything thrown near him and routinely either evades or overpowers would-be tacklers to set up big plays. Marino hasn’t had a group of receivers this impressive in a number of years and team observers say they see a confidence and calmness about him that they haven’t seen in years if ever. Chicago will need to make use of their newfound aerial attack seeing as they will once again trot out the wretched OG Mark “Plays like” Sheet to take his place next to crown jewel OG Tom Sanders, who will once again have to provide the sole push in the middle of the Eagles’ offensive line. Defensively, rookie CB Booker Jarrett has looked terrible. His biggest problem seemed to be his non-existent instincts and lack of football smarts, leading to him giving up big play after big play and gambling at inopportune moments. He didn’t come close to beating out Sean Sharper, who did look a bit slower after his injury. Finally, second round pick Bubba Baker may not be the kicking luminary Chicago thought it was getting. He reported to camp overweight and has been a bit erratic in his behavior (to give you an idea, he and DT Donovan Lork have become fast friends), but he still possesses a great deal more talent than longtime Chicago kicker Little Foot and the Eagles seem inclined towards a change at the position having lost a number of close games over the past few years.

Birmingham Headline: “New fullback is the Thor-y of camp” – The early returns from the Olympian training camp are that Neptune looks in over his head at RB and that Spartan is a great future prospect at WR but probably unable to start for now. And by far the biggest story has been first round pick FB Thor. The rookie clearly has a great deal of talent, but he just did not look like he cared. He refused to do additional conditioning and lifting after practice and seemed content to just collect a paycheck every week. That could have been all she wrote for a huge draft bust, but the veteran defensive players on the Olympians wouldn’t have it. At breakfast time one day around the middle of camp, S Odysseus came up behind Thor and cold-cocked him in the back of his head. Thor dropped to the ground and cowered slightly as Odysseus bellowed at him, “You listen to me punk! I played with one of the all-time ZFL great fullbacks. I played with Nymph man. You could be better, but you’re settling for being @#%@ instead. Have some heart and take some pride in yourself. I aint getting younger and I want another title. And I’m not gonna let your %@#$%@ attitude get in the way!” That morning at practice, the change began. Odysseus met with the rest of the defense before practice and exhorted them all to get in Thor’s face, see if the rook had any competitive fire. Hoo boy. One of the most brutal practices on record, including a great deal of taunting to go along with bone-crunching tackles by DT Hera, DE Atlantis, and naturally S Odysseus, finally got Thor’s juices going. In future practices, it was he who was delivering the punishment to the Olympian defenders with some impressive blocks of his own. But it wasn’t just his blocking that got people’s attention, it was his bruising running style and the amount of players it took to bring him down after his soft hands caught a pass out of the backfield. Thor went from being a bust to being the back the Olympians could have only hoped he would be. Last year’s starter at HB Roman will look to have a reduced role in the offense to give Thor some more touches and the rookie looks like he will be in the running for Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Little Rock Headline: “Little Mark Marmel adds firepower to potent offense.” – Another banner offseason for the Slick Willies yielded perhaps the best receiver they’ve ever had in WR Little Mark Marmel. The kid was fairly highly touted coming out, but he turned out to be better than expected, showing great hands to go along with absolutely blazing speed. He had some memorable moments going against last year’s rookie sensation S Red Herring, and while Herring held his own against the rookie for the most part, Herring had to shake his head a few times as “Flash” Marmel flew by him for a big gainer. Look for the Slick Willie offense to be even more explosive than last year. As for the other picks, OG Michael White has a long way to go before he’ll be contributing, but MLB Paddy O’Houlihan looked sharp for a rookie, delivering some big hits and knocking Certain Breakout from the starting lineup. While the team still has some defensive deficiencies, they have a good chance of improving on their record from last season.

Training Camp Reports (Part 2)

Milwaukee Headline: “Milwaukee lacking offensive ‘muscle.’” – Whispers around camp centered on the hex that seems to be placed on the Pound Machine name. Looking to replace one of their aging guards to add spark to their running game, The Muscle Men were disappointed to learn that highly touted guard Pound Machine Redux wasn’t nearly what they envisioned him to be when they made him their first round selection. Redux doesn’t get great leverage or move very well, and so oftentimes he doesn’t get a chance to use his great strength effectively. One thing you can say about him is that he’s young and shows some eagerness to learn, so while the present is certainly less rosy than the Muscle Men would’ve liked, they can at least have some hope for the future. On the other hand, like last year’s sleeper pick of DT No Name Necessary, the Muscle Men struck gold (albeit to a lesser extent) with their second round pick of Tim “No Wann” Bowens, who has shown impressive agility and though he still needs to mature some, looks like a real player. OT I have patience looks about as you’d expect: very very green. And yet, scouts still think he flashes enough talent that you could see him starting one day. A disappointment at the top, but not a bad haul overall for the Muscle Men.

Los Angeles Headline: “Where have the Stars gone on defense?” – Expectations were low in LA last year for the Stars, but the team had a fairly impressive showing. This made it all the more disappointing when DE Toby McGwire decided to make the leap to the NFL and become the third high profile defender to leave the Star Crunch defense in recent years (joining former All-Pro CB Paul Sorvino and recently inducted ZHOFer DT Ed Norton). That’s a huge talent loss to overcome and a lot of pressure remaining on the top two players from the Stars defense of their ZFL Championship days: Brad Pitt and Ray Liotta. To address this, the Stars tried to find a star CB by selecting Kevin Bacon with their top selection. Alas, the rookie doesn't seem to have what it takes to be a top corner. WR Ashton Kucher took him to school on a number of occasions and you could see the look of defeat in Bacon’s body language. Mia Sorvino was given every opportunity to hold onto her job, but unfortunately she proved even less adept than young Kevin and coaches decided to roll the dice and take their chances with the rookie. The other draft choice for defensive help, DE Gary Sinise, turned out to be a pleasant surprise. His natural competitiveness and intelligence led coaches to give him the starting spot over DE Bill Murray. And finally, the most ridiculous battle in camp turned out to be the one for the wide receiver spot opposite Ashton Kucher. 38 yr old veteran Joe Pesci came into camp looking very slow and had a case of the dropsies throughout the camp. But his only competitor was WR Don Cheadle, who though he did put on an impressive case of weight-lifting, looked lost as a receiver, breaking off his routes numerous times, dropping balls, and not getting separation from the secondary. Watching QB Bernie Mac, already an inconsistent passer, trying to throw to these guys led new GM revrew to storm out of one practice, shouting some incoherent question to the sky. Pesci was able to hold off the rookie for the wideout position, but look for Kucher to see nonstop double-teams from opposing secondaries.

Knoxville Headline: “At least the defense is young.” – As has been the case the past few years, reporters had the easiest time covering the ‘Necks training camp as they pulled out their scouting reports from the past few years and applied it to this year: “Thumbless Jackson, Jackson Jackson, Luke Jackson, offensive powerhouse, defensive pushover.” Knoxville tried to reverse the trend this year by focusing their early round picks on the defense, but based on the early returns, the success unfortunately wasn’t there. S Moonlight Jackson had some shining moments of big hits, but ultimately proved to be too cocky in his abilities and gave up too many big plays for coaches to trust him. MLB Marmel Jackson looked solid at MLB, with his lack of intelligence not hampering his ability to diagnose plays. Last year’s starter Opie Jackson fought him hard and won the starting spot, so Knoxville will have to settle on having some depth at the position. The sole offensive pick taken by the ‘Necks, OT Escalade Jackson, looks pretty decent for a third round pick, but not quite good enough to start.

Albuquerque Headline: “At least the defense is young (yes, the same headline).” – Training camp was a mixed bag for the Isotopes. The good news is judging by the play of the rookies, the future looks bright for Albuquerque. For the second straight year, the ‘Topes grabbed a solid young defender, this time solidifying the defensive end spot across from Disco Stu with Pie Man. He seemed to hold up nicely in the running game (unfortunately, the same could not be said of his teammates) and though his pass rushing was a bit raw, he showed enough to think he could be a bonafide star in the future. While neither Asa “Hellfish” Phelps nor Another Bust were ready to hit the starting lineup, the rooks gave every indication that they could be future contributors. The bad news for the Isotopes was that Pro Bowl OLB Kearney had a dreadful camp and it looked like his ligament damage had not healed well. They shouldn’t expect anything like a Pro Bowl season from him this year and in fact, if the rest of the Albuquerque defense doesn’t pick up his slack, the defense could be in for some long games.

Portland Headline: “First crack in the Sea Biscuit line appears” – It was an oddly pensive camp for a team that hasn’t finished lower than second in the ZFL standings for the past three years, but has been beaten by San Antonio by ever-increasing margins. The loss of OT Lothar von Richthofen seemed to suck the soul out of the team. His replacement, a fresh faced 20 yr old 20 Barrivendos the Conquerer, seemed overwhelmed by the inevitable comparisons to Lothar and wilted under the pressure. He seemed tentative at times and definitely lacked confidence in himself. While his fellow linemates Erik Flamebeard, Tim the Troll, and Leonardo Ruiz Al Elvaro publicly propped him up, photographers captured the questioning glances they cast each other, as if to say, “This…KID…is who we’ve tabbed to replace Lothar?” The other picks don’t look like they’ll take the field anytime soon. Luke the Leprechaun was far too inconsistent to take the speedy Zoinks McAllister’s starting spot at OLB. QB Manos, Hand of Fate actually surprised coaches with better arm strength than they expected, but he still doesn’t look like he’ll be better than the clipboard carrier for Paddy O.

San Antonio Headline: “Margaritas look primed for 3-peat.” – It seems like every year GM sachmo works his draft magic and finds someone who can be a contributor on his team. Last year it was the selection of WR Finlandia the Chilly who provided some memorable highlights in his rookie campaign. This year, that player could be CB Twenty Mike-Mike. He came out and showed good coverage skills going against the Margarita wideouts and overall showed more zip in his legs than the veteran Westbrook did. With his addition to the San Antonio defensive backfield, an already tough defense just got tougher. The other battle for a starting position was somewhat surprisingly at quarterback, where Dip Dipperson, who last year took a backseat to Ryan Leaf, battled hard to convince coaches they could count on him. And truth be told, Leaf looked like he might’ve let last year’s championship go to his head, showing up a little out of shape. When Leaf started off camp rusty, the switch was in: Dipperson regained the starting spot while Leaf took a seat. The press had a field day with the players the Margaritas acquired from El Paso via trade last year both slated to start on the bench. Finally, the remaining draft picks by San Antonio were sound picks for where they were taken, especially Sumo Madness who wowed observers with feats of strength no one around the league thought possible, but neither was able to crack the very tough starting lineup.

I'll send out rosters sometime this weekend. Just a note for GMs: there are a number of bench players who are quite talented and pretty much every team has some holes. I recommend keeping your eyes peeled for trade offers (or don't forget to make trade offers). There's no rush to get rosters turned in, so feel free to take your time making trades. As a reminder, when you do decide to make cuts, there will still be five bench spots for this year.

Durn. I was really hesitant about putting confidence in Marmel's last pick--Kevin Bacon in the first. I seriously considered drafting Twenty Mike-Mike in the second, just to ensure our CB spot. But, I needed every bit of help at DE and glad to see Sinise rising up to our expectations of his potential.

Hey, Cinci, you need a HB, right? I've got a young HB stud just itching to star for somebody, stuck behind Rodney Dangerfield on our depth chart. You wouldn't happen to have an extra WR or next year's draft pick you'd be willing to part with to solve your RB troubles?

Or if you need to trade a HB instead of a WR, I'll go Jerry Seinfeld for Khan straight up. I'll work to get either Khan or Chancellor and a third...I'll take either WR. Blockbuster Trade

LOS ANGELES - The L.A. Times has confirmed a groundbreaking three-way trade involving the LA Stars, Portland Sea Biscuits, and Cincinnati Chaps. The caliber of players exchanged in this trade further makes this some of the biggest news coming out of the ZFL offseason in years.

According to inside sources, LA has agreed to send reserve HB Jerry Seinfeld to Portland in exchange for WR Khan Ogadai. Portland then packaged Seinfeld and star DT Colonel Joseph C. McCormick III, sending the two players to Cincinnati in exchange for Cinci's first round pick next year.

When asked about the trade, LA GM Rev Rew said, "It's a win-win-win trade for all three teams. As for our part, the addition of Khan gives our team tremendous offensive balance. WR Ashton Kucher will have balance opposite him in the passing routes and the emergent running game will for the first time have a complete passing attack to complement it. LA fans should look forward to QB Bernie Mac having the best season of his career."

Military Middle Still Militaryish, Team States

PORTLAND - He's no Colonel McCormick, but Corporal Ziggy will have to do. With the tradition of former soldiers manning the defensive tackle positions still intact, Portland hopes that the young Ziggy will steadily improve, and keep the proud tradition of Portland's D-Line.

But, the real story will be next year. With Cinci's first round pick, the entire city of Portland is now praying for a no-win season by the Chaps. The big question now becomes...who will be replaced next year?

In a not-so-rare interview, perennial star lineman Erik Flamebeard stated "who the hell are you, and why does that Stud character from Fargo get access to my Harom?"

Wideout Manfred von Richthofen declined to comment...well, he did comment. None of us speak German, though. We at Portland Press sincerely hope that he didn't just insult our mothers.

In the most interesting interview, Kicker Voodoo Jalisco chanted a bunch of nonsense, and demonstrated to us the proper way to sacrifice a live goat. Insiders say Jalisco has grown even more psychotic since he's gotten his label of 'Best Kicker to Never Play A Game'. God help us. No, wait. Er, I mean 'Ancient Ancestor Spirits Help Us'. Sorry Mr Jalisco. Slip of the tongue. No, you can't have my tongue! Shiii......

Inside the ZFL by Dan Vesuvius

Now that the flurry of trades has subsided to some degree, let’s take a look at what the ramifications of the additions and subtractions around the league will mean for the teams involved:

Fargo

Players added – DE Strong Bad, S Black Mage
Players lost – OT Stud, OLB Hurt Your Mommy, 2010 3rd round pick

Analysis – Great move by Fargo to pick some defensive help in the secondary with S Black Mage, who should be a noticeable improvement over Safety Boy. In addition, they make room for young up-and-comer OT Dumbhead, who is ready to pick up where OT Stud left off. The trade for DE Strong Bad was a little unusual in that he isn’t quite good enough to crack the starting lineup, but with OLB The Jesus starting, there was clearly no future for Hurt Your Mommy in Fargo.

Albuquerque

Players added – Fargo’s 3rd round pick in 2010, OLB Hurt Your Mommy
Players lost – DE Strong Bad

Analysis – A minor pickup for the Isotopes, although Hurt Your Mommy might be needed to replace OLB Kearney in a year or two if Kearney’s knees continue to degenerate. Perhaps they can turn the Fighting Crawfish’s third round pick into something. Nevertheless, since they lost nothing by giving up an aging bench-sitter in Strong Bad, there’s no downside in the deal and GM NevStar should be praised for his shrewd trade.

Los Angeles

Players added – WR Khan Ogadai
Players lost – RB Jerry Seinfeld

Analysis – A huge gain for Stars, as Ogadai is clearly better than WR Joe Pesci and they lost nothing in trading Seinfeld who was never going to crack the starting lineup with the dangerous Dangerfield at running back.

Portland

Players added – OT Stud, Cincinnati’s 2010 1st round pick
Players lost – DT Colonel Joseph C. McCormick III, S Black Mage, WR Khan Ogadai.

Analysis – After they finished a disappointing second for a second consecutive year, GM Coffee Warlord decided to take drastic action in building towards the future. The present, however, looks awfully bleak in Portand. The loss of Joseph C. McCormick III creates a huge void in the Sea Biscuit line that is not adequately filled by Corporal Ziggy, and they took a step back at both safety and wide receiver as well. On the plus side, they got younger at all three positions and picked up Cincinnati’s first round pick last year, which could potentially be a high selection. And possibly best of all, by adding OT Stud, the right tackle position has been vastly improved over Barrivendos the Conquerer and their offensive line looks as dominant as it did last year.

Cincinnati

Players added – DT Colonel Joseph C. McCormick III, HB Jerry Seinfeld
Players lost – 2010 1st round pick

Analysis – The biggest player pickup of any of the traders was clearly DT Colonel Joseph C. McCormick III, who immediately replaces liability Eh Steve! in the starting lineup. With his pickup, the Chaps go from one of the worst defensive tackle positions in the league to one of the best. Adding Seinfeld was also a move in the right direction for Cincinnati, but it will be asking a lot of Jerry to resurrect the poor Cincinnati running game all by himself. A bold strike for GM Shorty and he has clearly upgraded his team, but the future is dimmer without that first round pick.

Stars GM Revrew Issues Apology and Promise
LOS ANGELES - Fans of the LA Stars were treated to an abrupt turnabout when GM Revrew traded WR Khan Ogadai to the Birmingham Olympians for WR Hercules and a second-round pick. Following the trade, Revrew issued the following statement:

"I know many fans will be disappointed not to see Khan in a Stars uniform. It was never my intention to bring Khan in as trade bait. Following our trade with Portland, however, Birmingham approached us with the deal we made yesterday, and it was too good to ignore.

As the GM, I have to face the reality that 2009 (even with Khan) was not going to be the Stars' year. Our defense is yet too young to give us the balanced attack needed to win the championship. So, looking to the future, we believe WR Hercules will develop into a player of Khan's ability, while Khan will soon be over 30. The addition of a second-round draft pick may mean that the Stars are able to bring in one more piece a championship-caliber team. When Hercules and the young players we have on defense mature, the Stars will be far more formidable than the current team with Khan.

So I apologize to those who wanted to see Khan in a Stars uniform. But I promise you that this trade will better enable us to reach our ultimate goal--a second championship for the LA Stars."
