Its off to take my daughter to her first organized sporting event, a soccer match. This U6 match without goalies should be a lot of fun,

I'm coaching my sons U6 team. Its his first year playing soccer. We are two games into the season and will be playing our 3rd today. I'm a little frustrated with the no goalie rule. My daughter played U6 a couple of years ago and goalies were allowed. Every game is basically the same. 10 kids swarm the ball until 1 kid breaks out and scores. At least when my daughter played they had a goalie to keep the score down. So far, we've been blown out twice. But the kids are having fun, so thats what counts.

We didnt keep score. Basically the game was a clusterfuck, a bunch of kids kicking the ball and a breakaway score shortly thereafter. I did think that the ref did a poor job of keeping the game organized, tho he was just a young kid and learning. Its not like its a big deal anyways. My daughter had fun, and thats all that mattered. I wasnt that dad either. I was however a little alarmed when my Daughter was apparently a bit tired and she pulled a Carmelo Anthony and told the coach she didnt want to go in(for the end of the game garbage time). I guess i dont know the pressures a 5 dollar allowance comes with.

No goalie??? Geez we are babying these kids. Lemme guess... At the end of the game, both teams are declared winners! We can't hurt kids feelings now, can we.

I hope that's not the case here (soccer starts in November), since I've been training my 5 year old to be a goalie.

Don't keep score? Is it so hard that people can't do it anymore? Seriously, I'll bet every single parent there was keeping a mental score in their head and the parents of the winning kids were telling them how they won right after they left.

Well... we won yesterday finally, although technically we're not keeping score anywhere except in our own heads. And you are right Sabotai, every parent is doing it in their head.

I coached my son's U8 team this past Summer, yeah Quebec is way too cold to think about a soccer season in the Fall, and were weren't officially keeping score, but every parent, AND every kid kept scores in their head. We had goalkeepers though :)
Think about feeling old, I was once a soccer referee, from age 14 to about 22, and I coached a bunch of U8 teams around that time. Now 33, I felt very old, coaching my own son's team, and not only a bunch of kids I have not relations to, as was the case in the old days... It was fun though, seeing them get a bit better every week. Yeah, the season started with the usual "12 kids swarming the ball and one breaks away" and it ended with kids doing headers, on their own not only being hit by the bal, and nice planned out passes that led to breakaway beauty of a goal... :)
My son played defense and while only in his first year at U8, he turned 7 in March, he was told a few times by other parents that he was our best defender out there. Daddy was proud :)
