Who is the NL MVP?

This is just a simple poll I'm conducting. As sports editor for my school paper, I've been a part of some lengthy discussions on this topic lately. If you'd like to explain your reasoning for selecting a specific player, go ahead, but I really just want to gauge who FOFC thinks is the true NL MVP.

I hate the Giants and am not too fond of Barry Bonds, but combining his typical dominating season with the Giants' run to a possible postseason berth (and literally keying the league's best offense from out of the bunch of no-good hacks he is surrounded with), I have to go with the Scowling One.

Something interesting that my friend and I were talking about because of this. I mean I don't like Bonds but to put anyone else atop the ballot would just be silly. Then since Bonds has basically had two hall of fame careers, we were discussing how this will effect HOF voters, since I'm sure many will not vote for him just because of the steriod allegations and him being Barry Bonds. So we were wondering about the top percentages of being elected into the hall of fame and discovered that no one has been on 100% of ballots. Not only that but Tom Seaver is on top of the list having recieved 98.84% of the vote. But this leads to some questions, like who didn't vote for Babe Ruth(9th on the list) or Willie Mays(11th on the list), how could you not consider the guys as Hall of Famers. And even more shocking is Jackie Robinson with a meager 77.50%. How could anyone not put this guy in the HOF. He's a part of the most important part of baseball history and you don't vote the guy in the HOF. So anyway my point is, you can never expect this voters to do what seems logical or fair.

I read an article on this several years ago. When the Hall of Fame was originally formed most voters saw it as something for the absolute best players. Not guys like Tony Perez, for example. There was also a very strong belief among many voters that it takes a very, very special player to be a 1st ballot HOFer. Somewhere in baseball's history the voting changed. Now, you are either a HOFer or you aren't. Most guys get in on the first ballot or they just don't make it.

Yea, Barry is just has 703 HR because all his homers come in contract years. Beltre, on the other hand, has been consistantly great throughout his career. :rolleyes:

It'll almost be as dumb as the BTN guys including Gammons saying if the Cy Young went to the best pitcher in the NL this year it would go to Randy Johnson and then saying Roger Clemens should win it.

I've always been astounded by this asserted difference (especially with the absolute cutoff being a playoff team). What does valuable mean?

And who is it valuable to? Is it valuable to the league? Is it valuable to the team?

And why aren't you valuable to your team if you increase their win total by 10 or 15 games (even if you don't make the playoffs)?

Why not wait and have the MVP voting after the WS and require that only a player on a WS winning team gets the award (since no one on a losing team has value)?

And doesn't this mean playing on a team with better players (since you make the playoffs), means the MVP candidate is more "valuable?" That just doesn't make any sense to me.
