View Full Version : Scouting your series for next season

Mr. Wednesday
10-04-2004, 11:40 PM
I realize there's a chance some of my series-mates might lurk through, but I'll post it anyway... I don't think I'll say anything that'll get me in trouble.

I just wrote up my series for another board, and since I figure a thread like this is inevitable and I'll need to produce the same thing again, why not do it now?

Meet the new series, same as the old series. ;)

Well, OK, not exactly. There's a demotee coming into IV.40 from III, plus the two dregs have gotten the predicted quick trip back to V, so we also have the autopromoters. Will the newcomer from III dominate the series on the way to a quick return? Are the autopromoters ticketed for a quick autodemotion back to V? Let's have a closer look -- rankings are by finish last season or assignment into the series.

1. First is the demotee from III, los chingones. They're an interesting case, a defense trainer who posts good defense ratings and midfield but pathetic attack ratings. They look more solid on overall ratings than the rest of the series, but it's an open question how the lack of offense will play. Prediction: 1st place.

2. OC Berserkers started last season with a big war chest. Then they spent $8 million on a divine midfielder form Sverige and watched him slowly bankrupt the team (putting up nasty midfield ratings along the way). Bernt Torsson was unloaded at a cut-rate price of $4 million and a big loss for Berserkers. The team looked pretty pedestrian the rest of the way. If they don't spend money, I might be able to catch up to them. Berserkers haven't played a friendly in a while (despite continuing to log in), so their forward training program must be lagging. Prediction: 3rd place.

3. The third-place finisher BayArea was just a hair ahead of the pack last season. Their only recent acquisition is a magnificent-world class (ballpark) keeper, presumably to shore up flagging defensive ratings. BayArea is a midfield trainer, so it may take a bit of a spending spree for Brays to be able to match them in midfield; although the team isn't all that far ahead, it may be unrealistic to hope for more than a split. As with last season, timing of the home match may be a problem -- then it preceded a must-win cup match, so didn't really get my full attention. Prediction: 2nd place.

4. Somehow, Whackers United FC managed to leverage a defense-heavy, counterattacking strategy into a 4th-place finish, thanks in part to a split with BayArea and with OC Berserkers (the latter partly gifted by the late-season decline in Berserkers' ratings). Brays was unlucky not to beat WUFC in the late-season match at their place, and if they don't spend some money to match us, we should finish ahead. Prediction: 4th or 5th place.

5. Buckeye FC is a little bit of a mystery to me; they don't put up a lot of stars, but still turned out competitive performances against teams that Brays management wrote off. In the end, the fifth-place finish came down to 3 goals of differential as both teams finished with mirror-image records (Buckeye with a win at home against BayArea but a road pratfall against autodemotee LA ScullKickers). Buckeye is a fellow keeper trainer, but their trainees do not appear to be as far along as Brays'. If Buckeye does not spend money going into next season, Brays will almost certainly pass them. Prediction: 6th or 7th place.

6. Brays Bayou FC is me. Keeper trainer (for at least two more seasons), but paradoxically with a weak defense. Well-rounded in attack, we have employed both a 3-4-3 and a 3-5-2 with success. If near world class keeper Jonathan Zuidema is transferred in the next few weeks, we'll be splashing some cash around and trying to solidify rating in the same territory that we put up in the qualifier. Prediction: 4th to 6th place.

7. Our first autopromotee is UWP-Rangers. Unlike the departed LA ScullKickers, UWP is a capable club that puts up average ratings similar to my own. They are a forward trainer, but the starters in league are a little old to be optimal for training. The team hasn't made any recent purchases, and based on the sizable transfer deficit, they probably aren't sitting on much cash right now. UWP has a chance at sticking in the league, and makes the tight battle from this season between Whackers, Buckeye, and Brays more dangerous. Prediction: 6th or 7th place.

8. On the other hand, TheSpastic-Snowballers looks like a dead ringer for the deparated InsertCoin F.C., albeit with a different training program. Winners of a weak series in V (except for a clear MOTS, nobody else had ratings outside the 100-teens), Snowballers is now training midfielders, but with a set of trainees in their early 20's (and not particularly distinguished in skill). They've made a recent significant transfer acquisition for $1 million, but a very puzzling one -- a keeper who gets only 0.5* more than the incumbent, which strikes me as a pretty poor way to upgrade for $1 million considering that neither their wingers nor their forwards are good enough to compete in this series. Prediction: 8th place.

As for my Division VI.500 ... It looks like im going to have a easy time. I went from finishing 7th in one of the hardest division V.'s ... our division was ranked in the top 10 every week, to a division where the last seasons best player was a 3 star guy.
:D
My guys will roll over this division, and get back up to division V where we belong!

I'm new and looking at the strength of the others it will be a battle but i might be able to hold on to 6 maybe even 5th in V 69, I know it's wishful thinking but any thing is possible.

Mr. Wednesday
10-05-2004, 12:56 AM
I think your chances of sticking in V.69 are pretty slim. The rest of the top 6 (you take over for a team demoting from IV) are well-established and at least a season beyond you, and Our Coach Has Slightly Improved (cute team name) looks to be at least at the level of the former #7 team Sandown North SC based on how they fared in the cup this season. I haven't even looked at the promoter into 8th yet.

Mr. Wednesday

Dola, don't get discouraged, but don't expect much in your first season. Focus on getting your training program going, and accept that it may take you a while to win a league match.

The good news is, you should get a relatively favorable cup draw, since you're inheriting an 8th-place IV team. Your cup opener may be winnable.

Heh MrW, the spastic snowballers started playin HT cuz i did...but i didnt speak w/ him for quite a while, anyway, i don't think he's ever been very serious about HT except the first month, so he shouldnt be a problem ;) ah well, he's a good guy anyway :)

Icy
10-05-2004, 03:46 AM
That is the main problem i see on HT, a team older than yours will perform better than you mostly of times. There should be more surprisses like a small team getting an awesome trainee from their youth squad, or crap players becoming good ones or good ones ruining their career like in real life. It would add a lot to the game. In real life, a young promissing star could become a crap profesonal player, and an averge one could become a top star, bringing tons of money to the small club who discovered him.

Mr. Wednesday
10-05-2004, 04:48 AM
That's an unexpected connection, Vikas.

They're running a suboptimal training program, but it does look like they have a program. They're just not really ready for IV yet, they need a series in V that pushes them a little harder so that they're really ready when they go up again.

Yeah, I just promted to V.35 and it's going to be a hard season. I've got better or equal ratings with about 3 or 4 teams, but the other ones are a bit above my level. The team that got demoted to from IV is pulling like 35-40 stars compared to my 30. It's shaping up to be another fun season.

IV.19 - A quick overview for season 24:

Three teams will compete for promotion: Fockers, Gargoyles, Pythons.

Two teams will compete for 4th or 5th, whichever they prefer: Gryndal, Arsenal AC

Three teams will be fighting to get that last relegation match: Aces, Dead Balls, Suffering Bastards.

Depending on moves in offseason, any team can move up or down one category, but I doubt that anybody would be able to move up or down two categories.

Well writted Mr. W. I don't know anything about your division or that much on your team, but you wrote that well enough for me to be interested all the way through your post. It was interesting to me too, because from your post I see that your division had the LA Skull Kickers which is funny because I beat them in the cup last season and I was so shocked because he was D4. Now I know he wasn't that good! :) Anyway, best of luck to you!

French III.4 Div

6 top teams the same (/me likely 3rd again as usual)
1 promoted team looks like a potential bot in 4 weeks
1 other guy looks like the #7 team that everybody will PIC.

With luck, I could scratch and claw to 6th, maybe even 5th.

I'm probably going to finish last.

Me too :)

IV.3 is just amazingly talented. The other auto-promotee looks to be a little worse than I am, but it's going to take some nice improvements for me to put a dent in this series. I'm going to upgrade my coach within the next few days, no change from Solid, but better leadership should help me maintain TS a little better, and hopefully improve my midfield. I'll have about $700,000 after that, and I might sell a Formidable middie...I think I'll have to buy another forward, but I won't have the money to go as high as I want to (another Outstanding). We'll have to see what happens...

Well, the other auto-promotee is better, and I won't have cash to upgrade my midfield to match the 3 or so teams I think I can hang with until week 2 or 3. So I'm going to start 0-3, maybe 0-4. It's just a question of whether that upgrade (formidable to world class) will be enough to get me out of that hole. I'll have a group of 4 forward trainees that all can start, based on form that week, so ,I could sell one of them later in the season as well. It's just a question of timing and luck. All of this with probably the worst defense in the series.

Two quality teams appear in D.IV.6 and will improve the competion there again. We should be near the top third in toughest divisions. A quick overview of our division and its favorites:

1. Griffs - <TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=0 border=1><TBODY><TR><TH>Totals</TH><TD class=numcol2> 65 (61%)</TD><TD class=numcol2> 38 (36%)</TD><TD class=numcol2> 4 (4%)</TD><TD class=numcol2>107</TD><TD class=numcol2> 350 </TD><TD class=numcol2> 196 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
<TABLE border=1><TBODY><TR><TD class=numcol>174.9 </TD><TD class=numcol>43.5</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Won the division 2 seasons ago, and should be the favorite to win again. Although has yet to beat the MISFC.

2. MISFC - <TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=0 border=1><TBODY><TR><TH>Totals</TH><TD class=numcol2> 75 (73%)</TD><TD class=numcol2> 24 (23%)</TD><TD class=numcol2> 4 (4%)</TD><TD class=numcol2>103</TD><TD class=numcol2> 382 </TD><TD class=numcol2> 159 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
<TABLE border=1><TBODY><TR><TD class=numcol>171.0 </TD><TD class=numcol>42.9 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Us, Last years winners. We are a threat, and could possibly repeat.

3. High Tops - <TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=0 border=1><TBODY><TR><TH>Totals</TH><TD class=numcol2> 71 (67%)</TD><TD class=numcol2> 28 (26%)</TD><TD class=numcol2> 7 (7%)</TD><TD class=numcol2>106</TD><TD class=numcol2> 470 </TD><TD class=numcol2> 209 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
<TABLE border=1><TBODY><TR><TD class=numcol>166.2 </TD><TD class=numcol>40.9 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

A new promotee and fellow FOFCer Professor58, who will make a serious impact on the new season.

4. FORTE - <TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=0 border=1><TBODY><TR><TH>Totals</TH><TD class=numcol2> 74 (70%)</TD><TD class=numcol2> 25 (24%)</TD><TD class=numcol2> 7 (7%)</TD><TD class=numcol2>106</TD><TD class=numcol2> 393 </TD><TD class=numcol2> 167 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
<TABLE border=1><TBODY><TR><TD class=numcol>161.7 </TD><TD class=numcol>39.9</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

A very midfield heavy squad who will figure into the top few teams. Probably will not win unless he balances his team a little.

5. FC Tholcrist - <TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=0 border=1><TBODY><TR><TH>Totals</TH><TD class=numcol2> 66 (61%)</TD><TD class=numcol2> 32 (29%)</TD><TD class=numcol2> 11 (10%)</TD><TD class=numcol2>109</TD><TD class=numcol2> 311 </TD><TD class=numcol2> 161 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
<TABLE border=1><TBODY><TR><TD class=numcol>162.3 </TD><TD class=numcol>39.0 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

A keeper trainer who supplies France with its U20 Goalie, has had bad luck but is in the hunt for the title.

6. Brewski's - <TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=0 border=1><TBODY><TR><TH>Totals</TH><TD class=numcol2> 82 (74%)</TD><TD class=numcol2> 22 (20%)</TD><TD class=numcol2> 7 (6%)</TD><TD class=numcol2>111</TD><TD class=numcol2> 378 </TD><TD class=numcol2> 151 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
<TABLE border=1><TBODY><TR><TD class=numcol>157.1 </TD><TD class=numcol>38.1</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

A team very similar to the MISFC. Has the winning number against us. Also a threat to compete.

7. Pingchester United - <TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=0 border=1><TBODY><TR><TH>Totals</TH><TD class=numcol2> 64 (60%)</TD><TD class=numcol2> 32 (30%)</TD><TD class=numcol2> 10 (9%)</TD><TD class=numcol2>106</TD><TD class=numcol2> 359 </TD><TD class=numcol2> 182 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
<TABLE border=1><TBODY><TR><TD class=numcol>145.6 </TD><TD class=numcol>37.7</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

The other new promotee. Is also very midfield heavy and reminds me of FORTE. A bit too weak in the other areas to make a serious run.

8. XTreme FC - <TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=0 border=1><TBODY><TR><TH>Totals</TH><TD class=numcol2> 61 (73%)</TD><TD class=numcol2> 19 (23%)</TD><TD class=numcol2> 4 (5%)</TD><TD class=numcol2>84</TD><TD class=numcol2> 309 </TD><TD class=numcol2> 138 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
<TABLE border=1><TBODY><TR><TD class=numcol>139.8 </TD><TD class=numcol>34.2</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

The weakest of the bunch, but came on strong at the end of last season to avoid auto-demotion. They are again at the bottom of the heap. Who knows what they will do.

A summary of IV.35, former home of the MoKan Mighty Bastards and new home of the Slithy Toves and Mad Huligans:

In the pre-season order:

Captain D's Seafood

Last Season: #1, threw the qualifier and got walloped 8-0

Expected to: Challenge for the series title

Captain D's is a typical midfield-heavy D.IV team, which has recently upgraded their attacks with the addition of 7* Swedish forward Tvork Bork Bork. This has brought their attack up to the level of the rest of the series, combined with a competitive defense and a dominant midfield, that's all you need to win in Hattrick. Maybe.

Sco United

Last Season: #2, 10 points out of first

Expected to: Challenge for the series title

Another midfield heavy team - a early-season slump knocked them out of the title competition last season, but they came on strong in the second half to secure a second place finish. While Captain D went for the late-season offense boost, Sco went the other way, securing 5* English keeper Bruno Lucas to give their defense a kick.

Crown Royals

Last Season: #3, 10 points out of first

Expected to: Flirt with the relegation line.

A balanced, well-managed team that seems to outperform its talent level. Still a step behind the top teams in the series, but expect them to put more than one scare into the series leaders.

MV Lisbon

Last Season: #4, 11 points out of first

Expected to: Threaten the leaders but come up just short.

MV Lisbon is the final member of the "really good but couldn't beat Captain D" club. They could close the gap to take the series lead, but the smart money says they come up short once again. Now that Big Red has been demoted, MV Lisbon is now the best defensive team in the series, and we all know what defense does in Hattrick!

Izzy's Diaper Bombers

Last Season: #5, 17 points out of first - won their qualifier 3-0

Expected to: Fight bravely against relegation.

Izzy lost six of their last seven in what must have been a very disappointing end to a promising season. Unfortunately, they appear to be losing ground on the rest of the series, and they are not favored to repeat their early success from the first half. A surprise is always possible, though.

Slithy Toves

Last Season: #1 in V.41 - won their qualifier 4-1

Expected to: Struggle for survival.

Slithy relegated to division V last season from a tough IV series, and, after going undefeated in series play, are back to have another shot at division IV. IV is significantly tougher this time around, though, and the Toves are not expected to do more than fight for a qualifier this season. A few lucky bounces might see the Toves clear of the relegation line, but nothing more is realistically possible.

Mad Huligans

Last Season: #1 in V.187 - autopromoted over MoKan Mighty Bastards

Expected to: Upset the established order.

Huligans spent many a season in the hell that is IV.19 before finally demoting in a hard-luck qualifier last season. After thrashing the poor schleps in V.187 for a season, they're back in IV with a real chance to compete. They may still be a step behind the top of the series, but anyone caught napping could be in for a rude awakening. With a bit of luck, even the series title might be possible.

Red Stag

Last Season: #1 in V.54 - autopromoted over Asheville Demons

Expected to: Play spoiler.

The last of the teams to return after a one-season sabbatical in division V, Red Stag looks like they're in for a season long headache. Their light-hearted cruise through one of the weaker division V series has not prepared them well for a return to divison IV play, and they look like an early favorite to return to division V next season. Still, they have enough talent to generate an upset, so the other teams in the series may well see their fates decided by Red Stag.

V.178 really isn't worth a whole lot of scouting - only three teams, including mine, appear to be training anything, although we did get rid of the team that had more owners (two) than logins between them (one). :)

New arrival West Ottawa Panthers will go back up to D.IV with 42 points, 5th and 6th will be 5th and 6th again, the autopromotees will autodemote, and I'll be somewhere between 2nd and 4th.

IV.3 should be a dogfight this year, as there is no clear favorite. Apparently the consensus is Bolts and I will battle it out for first, but I'm not so sure. The top 6 teams are all capable of beating each other at home, so assuming everyone stays healthy this year, which they did not last year, any of those teams could win.

We've lost an FOFCer two years in a row, so I'll be pulling for you to succeed, it's nice to have some company.

Good luck!

Thanks ausonny -- I think I might be able to hang...and by hang, I mean stay in 7th and flirt with 6th :) By the end of the season, I believe that my midfield will be strong enough to keep me in most games, and the sale of a trainee or two should allow me to improve my squad in a couple of other areas; if I can get a great forward to play opposite Killquist and my midfield improves, I should be in pretty good shape.

III.15 in Canada should be a tough series next season. All five returning teams cranked their level of play a notch in the last few weeks of the season and they will welcome two former div III teams in the two promotees from IV, teams that averaged ratings of 185 and 178 in the last 4 weeks of the season. Also, coming down from II will be another Quebec team, former All Canadian member, Comitox. They "were" capable of ratings up to 241 last season, but they may have a harder time this season, since he has just sold his three starting midfielder, two extraterrestrial and a supernatural

As you can see, my team is clearly the youngest in there. There are 3 teams with about, or more, than 3 years of life, four around 2 years and a quarter, and my Dragons, well under 2 years...

My average of 172.8 in the last four weeks is kind of misleading, since I PICed 3 of the 4, including the last week of the season, in preparation for a possible qualifier that never came. Also, you can add some ratings points for my team, especially in the defense department, with the acquisition of a magnificent, near world class keeper that will replace an excellent one and a formidable defender that will also replace an excellent one...

Some of them are sitting on some huge amounts of money though, and it may take a few weeks before we can see who's improved and who's the real beast of the league...

edit: to add that my ratings are based on disastrous (very low)=1, then add 0.25 per sublevel. So passable (very low) is 6, passable (low) is 6.25, and so on. Also, d1, d2 are based on strong side defense and weak side defense. I don't average side with side, only strong side on strong side. Same with a1, a2 and the attacks. I find it more meaningful since people may switch sides depending on formation and that would give a lower average on both sides, instead of presenting one really high side and one really low side... Some teams never switch sides, but most do, especially in III, even in Canada :p

Could sound stupid, but how do you know all this?

you mean, me? I'm an obsessive-compulsive data-keeping excel freak, didn't you all know that already??? :D ;)

Every week, I pull the ratings for all the teams in my series, not only my team's, so I had the last 4 games of at least 5 teams. Then I went and pulled the ratings of the last 4 weeks of the 3 remaining teams. Dumped the whole thing in excel, fooled around with it a little, and voilą! :)

you can probably get it from this site:
http://www.rembrandt.net/hattrick/series.cgi?SeriesName=V.233&LeagueID=2

Plug in your country and series number and you should see who's coming...
