I had an idea to solve two of the United States' problems this morning while taking a dump (this is where I do some of my best thinking :) ).

Problem #1: Illegal immigrants. People come across our borders every day and receive the same "freedoms" that legitimate citizens have. While I don't want to single out a certain country *cough* Mexico *cough*, I don't see many French Canadians jumping the border to the U.S. Additionally, if an illegal alien mother gives birth to kids while in the United States, those kids are entitled to a free public education, etc.

Problem #2: Not enough soldiers in Iraq. The military is having people who deployed a year ago deploy again for another year in Iraq. We've tapped into the National Guard and now the Inactive Reserves to sent troops over to Iraq. The OPTEMPO (Operations Tempo) is too high for Active Duty troops, and we need more.

Solution to both problems: Grant citizenship to illegal immigrants if they join the military. This is ala Starship Troopers, and I propose to throw in a little Glory as well. If the preponderance of illegal immigrants only speak Spainish, then we need to make an all-Spainish speaking Unit of Action (the new Army's Division, Brigade, etc.). Also, instead of deporting any illegal immigrants we find, we can offer them a choice, ala Dirty Dozen (immunity for a crime). In order to make it work, I would propose that we grant immunity for the alien, one adult dependent, and any biological children they would have.

There is an immigration for service time plan that has been used for a long time. I think the folks still need to pass other cit requirements.

Some problems though:

Many illegals can not pass our military entrance requirents. Lack of education is major concern, as is a language barrier.

More importantly, it will be nearly impossible to grant a clearance to all the immigrants, which (along with factors like education) limits what they can do.

We dont have a structure designed to accomodate a dramatic increase in the number of troops. Ever past rapid expansion of the military has shown a decrease in effectiveness until the new generation of leaders can become functional.

Not saying there is not a place and a roll for your idea, but it has some problems.

Point taken. But I highly doubt they would be flying F-18s. :)

Very true. That's why we need the drill sergeant in Glory.

You know I think they are already doing this. I've heard of people having their citizenship timeframe moved up for joining the military.

They're doing something like this. You don't have to be a U.S. citizen to join the military, but you have to get your citizenship by your (I think) 8th year of service. The program that they have is for people who have already joined the military, not for illegal immigrants.

Not a bad idea if we ever plan a ground war against China. But for now, we don't need THAT many more troops.
