Davis Wilcox Returns to Coaching
Will Take Southern Utah Head Coaching Position

(Cedar City, UT) – Davis Wilcox stunned the basketball world today with his announcement that he will return to coaching college basketball, nearly 15 years after his departure from the University of Iowa under a cloud of scandal. At a joint press release with Southern Utah AD Kent Lockley, Wilcox said that he was pleased to be joining the team at Southern Utah and he hoped to be able to turn around a three season slide that has sent them towards the bottom of the Mid-Continent Conference. Wilcox is well-known in the coaching community as an exceedingly able coach, and made waves in his early thirties when he took Appalachian State University to two Final Four appearances in six years of coaching. This led him to a job with the University of Iowa, where he led the Hawkeyes to four Big 10 championships and many deep runs in the NCAA tournament, culminating in a loss in the championship game in his final season. Allegations of recruiting violations involving members of his coaching staff reached the NCAA, and exploded into a huge scandal that involved the sacking of the entire staff, Wilcox, and Iowa’s athletic director. Wilcox always maintained his innocence, stating that he was unaware of any of the illicit activities being perpetrated by others, and though the NCAA could find no direct evidence of his knowledge or participation in the violations, he was struck with a five year suspension from coaching at the NCAA level. This led to his retirement and withdrawal from the world of college basketball, until today.

When asked what his reasons for coming back were, 62 year old Wilcox replied “Enough time has passed to heal some of the wounds, and I want to make a run at a championship before I’m too old to coach again.”

I haven’t been playing much FBCB lately, and haven’t had a dynasty since my short lived “assistant” one in January. My goal here will be to take a very good coach, return him to coaching a low level team, and try to win a national championship within 10 years, after which he’ll be too old to coach. I’ll grab whatever coaching opportunities I think will further my goals. (I did this before some time ago and found it a lot of fun, my last attempt led to a dominant Utah State program, 3 Final Fours and a championship game loss in the 10 years, after a couple years kicking around lower level teams.)

There’s not a lot of standouts on this roster, but that’s okay, honestly I’m only expecting to be at this school for one season, then take a higher prestige job somewhere else. Hopefully I’ll be able to get a winning season out of this crew though.

Myles Bove is the best inside man, with good scoring and rebound skills under the basket. PG Bittner has good hands and should be able to move the ball around well. We don’t have much in the way of defense and will have to scrape by with what we have.

I schedule a mix of some hard games to challenge our players and a lot of moderate prestige teams. I don’t expect all that much from this team, but a winning season and top 3 finish in the conference would be nice.

Recruiting

We have four scholarships to use this year, and need to fill the gaping hole at SF, as two of ours are seniors. I’ve always been good at recruiting, though I’m rusty of course, we’ll see if I can keep in synch with today’s players.

I recruit mostly in Utah this time, with a couple of calls to California. There are a lot of three star recruits who seem interested in our program. I have a solid amount of recruiting dollars because I skimped on my assistants, hiring a lot of young guys with not much experience. I’m able to blitz my chosen recruits with calls and visits, hopefully it will pay off soon.

Our first recruit is SF James Herron, an All-Stater and top 50 SF from Roosevelt, Utah. He has all-around scoring ability inside and outside and looks like he can develop into some defensive skills as well, but he needs to work a lot on his conditioning.

PF Robin Orth also commits, a top 50 PF from Tooele, Utah. He doesn’t add much to the offensive side, but has a big body and a lot of rebounding skills and defense on the post. He should shore up our team’s weak defensive roster.

Both of these guys commit before training camp, and now we’re ready to start the season. Let’s see what these boys can do.

11/27/05 at American (6-7) W 58-48 2-2

We start off with expected losses at two fairly tough teams, and wins against a couple of weak ones. The big surprise so far has been SF Robert Hewitt, who has 20 points per game through the first month. He’s shown an excellent jumper and an ability to make openings. Myles Bove has not disappointed either, but I want to see some more consistency from my team as they move later into the season.

12/25/05 Montana (6-4) W 83-43 6-5
12/29/05 Lafayette (7-4) W 70-61 7-5

An up and down month, but mostly up. We lost to some teams I would have liked to see us beat, including Princeton and Monmouth, but ended the month strong by beating two winning teams. SF Hewitt is still leading the team in scoring, despite missing two games to injury, he’s just one of those players who plays better than he’s scouted, and he’s gotten a lot of help from PG Bittner who is leading the team in assists. PF Bove is averaging over 15 points and 9 rebounds per game, and is a dominant force down low. We’re getting some good bench play from reserve center Cornett, our starting center Don Golden is nothing special so far.

We get another recruit in December, and lose one to UCLA. SG Otto Nadeau is the #40 SG in the country, out of Provo, Utah. He’s quite raw now, but has the makings of a good all-rounder who can shoot, pass, and play defense.

01/28/06 at Western Illinois (7-13) W 80-55 14-7 (6-1)

A very good month overall, as we dominate conference opponents, most of whom are very weak this year. The only downside this month was an upset loss to UM-KC, a team we should definitely not have lost too. The second best team in the conference is Oakland who we will play twice next month. Right now we’re 1st or 2nd in the conference in every category but assists and blocks, with Hewitt, Bove, and Bittner scoring at will on weak conference foes. All we need is to finish out strong and beat Oakland and I have high hopes for a conference championship. The bad news is that we lose another SF recruit, and the pickings are getting very very thin.

02/25/06 Oakland (13-13) W 60-52 19-9 (11-3)

Another good month, though we drop two games, we crush most of the teams we play, and fend off a strong challenge from UMKC to take the regular season conference title. Our players really pulled together and are looking like a strong squad at this point. We’re shooting .451 from the floor and .729 from the line, so offense has not been a problem.

We manage to land our final recruit this month, SF Austin Suzuki from Moose River, Canada. He’s got a good three point shot and excellent shot blocking ability, something that is completely lacking on our current roster. He’s not a great player but should function well as a reserve

We go into the conference tournament optimistic, and walk through our first two games, before we win an extremely tight game against UMKC. They were up by 10 at halftime but we clawed our way back and won the game on strong second half play by Leandro Whittier. We get the #15 seed in the West for the NCAA tournament! Southern Utah’s fans and athletic department are overjoyed.

Unfortunately we face #2 seed North Carolina, currently polling at #4 in the country. There’s not much hope that we can win this game but I’d like to put on a good show. I’m already fending off tons of reporters who want to know how I took a team like Southern Utah and put them in the NCAAs in my first season.

We get dominated by UNC, 100-52, they just blew us off the court. Still, our players were glad to just have the chance to get into the Big Dance. North Carolina goes all the way to the Final Four before losing to Kentucky, who beats a surprising Tulsa team to win the national championship.

Robert Hewitt is named Conference Player of the Year, and three of our starters get first-team honors. I’m named Conference Coach of the Year as well. We will lose 4 of our starters to graduation so next year’s team will be quite different, of course I don’t expect to be here to coach it.

2006 off-season

I received many coaching offers, one of the first ones was from my first team, Appalachian State. However I didn’t think I wanted to go back there again, their program has fallen on hard times anyway. After sifting through my offers, I decided to accept the head coaching position at Montana. They were 20-10 last year, and champions of the Big Sky conference. They return three starters and have a nicely improved budget over Southern Utah.

2006 season – Montana

I brought my old staff over from Southern Utah, except my scouting assistant, I wasn’t impressed with the old guy and hired a new one from Texas A&M.

It’s a solid looking roster, with returning starters C William Tallent, PF Deon Arruda and PG Arron Eckhardt. Eckhardt is a solid scorer with a good jumper, a talent for stealing the ball, and good from the free throw line. Tallent doesn’t provide much offense but is a leader in rebounding and post defense. We’ll need to see him improve his stamina though. Arruda doesn’t impress me, honestly, and I may replace him at PF. The last coach recruited a lot of JC players, so I should have some solid replacements at least.

Recruiting

We have four scholarships this year, to fill the spots of our three starters and one other PF. I make initial trips around Montana, to Washington, and to Colorado to look at players. There’s lots of good ones out there, if only I can convince them to come to Mizzoula.

Our first commitment is SF Ike Crowley. I don’t really need a SF but the PFs are getting swarmed and I think Crowley can play either position, he’s the #55 player overall and Mr. Basketball in Montana so I felt I had to try and grab him.

November 2006

I tried to pack the schedule this month to let my boys get used to the game, plus later on our conference schedule is a nightmare with many back to back games, so I want to get their conditioning up. I’m concerned about what kind of scoring threats our team may be able to produce beyond PG Eckhardt.

11/22/06 at Long Beach State (1-2) L 79-65 1-3
11/27/06 Navy (2-3) W 70-42 2-3

I’m disappointed in our loss to Long Beach State but not otherwise surprised. Eckhardt is putting in over 20 points a game so far as our main scoring threat, but JC transfer SF Eric Brodie is doing well too.

We land another recruit, but lose two others. C James Howell from Northglenn, Colorado is the #41 center in the country, and has a lot of potential as an inside player and at blocking shots, though he will need a lot of development.

We play a pretty undistinguished bunch of teams this month and handle most of them, including a visit to Southern Utah, who has not been able to continue their success so far. We’re ranked #2 in the nation in turnovers with 12.9 so that’s one thing we have going, and are scoring over 72 points a game. Eckhardt and Brodie continue to lead our offense.

We move into conference play and play quite well, only losing one game this month, an upset to Weber State on the road. We continue to steal the ball a lot and convert it into points, and I like to see the aggressiveness that Eckhardt, Brodie, and SF Fuller are showing in going after the ball.

We sign our final recruit of the year, PF Jeronimo Andres from Leganes, Spain. With the exception of Ike Crowley, I am very disappointed with our recruiting efforts this year, many good players were snatched away from us and I had to grab anyone I could. This player has great physicality but leaves a lot to be desired in terms of his skills.

In a familiar position, we are given the #15 seed in the West, and will play Michigan State. We slow the game down against them, trying to shut down their scorers, and hold them to only 54 points (only Duke held them to less than that this season,) but unfortunately we only manage 40. Still, I’m pretty happy to have played so well against a top 10 team. Arron Eckhardt is given Player of the Game for his 21 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals.

Maryland goes on to beat Michigan State in the title game.

Arron Eckhardt is named Big Sky Conference player of the year, and I am named Conference Coach of the Year. Somehow our recruiting class was named #37 in the nation, I’m not sure how. Crowley must have been viewed as a prize recruit.

2007 offseason

Again I get quite a few offers, though few of them are from upper conference teams. Either I haven’t proved myself yet or teams are still scared off of my reputation, maybe both. One intriguing offer I get is from College of Charleston, they have dominated the Southern Conference the last two years and last year won the NIT tournament. Their prestige is quite a bit higher than Montana’s which is good, and they return some decent starters including a freshman All-American from last year. They seem like a team that is ready to go to the next level, with the proper coaching. I accept their offer. I also hire a new recruiting assistant, John Taylor, away from Vermont.

This is a very good roster compared to what I’ve had the last two years, there are some quality returning starters and several other players who are quite good as well. I can’t wait to see these kids in action. PG James Flanigan is a two year starter who is an assist guy, great hands and quickness, though not much for scoring. PG Malcom Crossland has been starting at SG for two seasons, he has a great three point shot, good hands and passing abilities, and is excellent defensively. SF Napoleon Washer started as a freshman last year and was named as a Freshman All-American. He’s a solid defensive player who can rebound and steal the ball. I also expect to start Lino Foster at PF, he’s a rebounding monster who plays great defense and blocks shots. Center is the only weak spot in my lineup at this point. Edgar Jameson may get the start as a freshman, he has great conditioning and an inside shot which we may need to boost our offense.

We get an invite to the Maui Shootout which the players really appreciate (who wouldn’t want a trip to Hawaii?)

Recruiting

We have four slots available, and three senior PGs, terrible mismanagement on the part of the previous coach. There is also a SF spot to fill.

We get two commitments before training camp. The first is SG Chuck Batista out of Columbia, SC. I decided to go for an extra SG instead of the third freshman PG for this year, and Chuck looks like a great player. He’s the #35 SG in the country, has great quickness and jumping already, and great potential across the board. The second signing is PG Michael Wharton, a reserve with great physicality and good hands.

Since I may be with this team longer, I’ll start showing the stats for my projected starters, if people are interested.

Date Opponent Result Record
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11/20/07 at Brigham Young (3-1) L 63-45 0-1
11/23/07 at Louisiana Tech (1-1) W 69-66 1-1
11/26/07 vs. Illinois (3-1) L 63-50 1-2
11/27/07 vs. Pepperdine (2-3) W 76-61 2-2
11/28/07 vs. Southern California (3-2) L 93-75 2-3

Some brutal competition this month, as we face top 20 school BYU as well as Illinois and USC in the Maui Shootout. We do beat Pepperdine who were seeded ahead of us in the tournament, at least. Edgar Jameson really made a splash in some of these games, scoring 20+ points three times. It looks like he will be for real after all.

December 2007

12/01/07 Louisiana State (9-2) W 84-61 3-3
12/06/07 Notre Dame (5-6) W 76-66 4-3
12/10/07 St. John's (7-3) W 66-53 5-3
12/14/07 at Providence (9-2) L 80-77 5-4
12/18/07 Kansas State (7-3) L 77-69 5-5
12/23/07 Oakland (5-5) W 96-49 6-5
12/27/07 Wagner (4-5) W 101-68 7-5

We had a pretty challenging schedule this month, but came off with great wins against LSU and St John’s as well as some against weaker opponents. Our defense has not been the best and I am focusing on that in our practices. We did sign our two final recruits this month, both players I am happy about. SF Benny Anderson is the #39 SF in the country, an all-stater out of New Jersey, and has a nice jump shot, is able to block shots well, and is solid all around. We beat out Arizona State for PG David Jacobson out of Ruidoso, NM. He’s the #33 PG in the country, an all-stater, and has great potential in defense and in three point shooting.

01/09/08 Chattanooga (5-12) L 55-53 9-6 (1-1)
01/16/08 at The Citadel (8-9) W 83-64 10-6 (2-1)
01/19/08 at UNC Greensboro (6-11) W 79-52 11-6 (3-1)
01/21/08 Georgia Southern (10-8) W 74-73 12-6 (4-1)
01/23/08 East Tennessee State (10-8) W 94-60 13-6 (5-1)
01/26/08 Western Carolina (9-9) W 91-58 14-6 (6-1)

Moving into conference play, we have no problems, except for an upset loss to Chattanooga. We have dominated conference play for three seasons now, so this performance is no real surprise. What is an unwelcome surprise though, is leading scorer Edgar Jamerson being put on academic suspension for next month. Hopefully we’ll get along without him, but I’m worried since center is a weak spot for which we have few replacements and our team may seriously lack offense without him.

February 2008

02/04/08 at Evansville (11-15) W 69-48 16-6
02/06/08 at Appalachian State (18-8) W 62-60 17-6 (8-1)
02/13/08 Davidson (7-21) W 75-57 18-6 (9-1)
02/16/08 Wofford (14-11) W 65-47 19-6 (10-1)
02/18/08 at Wofford (14-11) W 71-57 20-6 (11-1)
02/20/08 Furman (8-18) W 75-35 21-6 (12-1)
02/23/08 at Chattanooga (8-18) W 70-54 22-6 (13-1)
02/27/08 The Citadel (11-14) W 64-37 23-6 (14-1)

Well we missed Jamerson, but we had no problems dusting off conference competition this month. We’re ranked in the top 10 teams in the country in defense and steals right now. Jamerson finished his suspension and will be back for us for the rest of the year fortunately.

March 2008

03/01/08 at Georgia Southern (15-14) W 79-55 24-6 (15-1)
03/07/08 vs. The Citadel (13-17) W 100-65 25-6
03/08/08 vs. East Tennessee State (18-12) W 72-58 26-6
03/09/08 vs. Chattanooga (12-20) W 74-51 27-6

We finish out the regular season against Georgia Southern, then walk through the conference tournament without even a close game.

We are rewarded with the #10 seed in the Western bracket, facing off against Southern Mississippi to start. I’m not sure what my team will do in the tourney, they’ve looked very good at times this year, but don’t have the scoring power or the depth to make a deep run.

Our game against Southern Mississippi was a closely matched one, and low scoring, they were up by 5 at the half, however with about 8 minutes left we just started pulling away, as their guys got tired and Jamerson was putting in point after point. We ended up with a 74-53 win, and Jamerson had 26 points. My first tourney win since my return! Unfortunately now we would have to play Stanford, the #2 team in the country and a team that has been dominating this season. We lost 79-47, as expected, we are a solid team but not one of the best in the nation…yet. Stanford went on to win the NCAA tournament as many had predicted, beating Duke in the finals.

We got a slew of rewards, Malcolm Crossland was named Conference Player of the Year, he just got it all done for us. Edgar Jamerson was Conference Freshman of the Year.

Starters Crossland and Flanigan graduated this year. We had the #51 ranked recruiting class in the country.

I'm planning to stick with C of C, probably for the rest of the dynasty, if there's more stats or information that people want to see going forward, just let me know.
