First off let me say that I'm not stopping because I've lost money, in fact since the early part August i've got a profit of about $1700, but I guess since that profit at one point was close to $2000 I am losing money, lol.

I've been been bleeding money the past 3 weeks, losing about $200 in football and losing slightly in poker but more just being stagnant.

I feel now however, that with enough money gained to pay of my credit cards and provide a pretty solid Christmas for my Girlfriend and her kids, it's time to walk away for a little while and just cash out what i've made and relax for a little bit. Whats the only thing thats stopping me?

The rush of course, theres nothing like the rush that poker provides and it's become such a big part of my like that I can hardly imagine what it'll be like without it.

I've got $18 left in my AP account and i'll play on that until it's gone and of course 1 good day could leave me playing all the time again, but I know i need to stop, i just can't fathom stopping, so I need some advice, because i'm not good at stopping things that are becoming bad for me, just ask my smokers cough. So I need suggestions, anyone got any ideas?

Please, i think i've smoked twice as much as normal since I started playing, and my once pristine computer room now smells like the lobby at Phillip Morris.

The addicition is the the thrill. I am playing at a .02/.04 table and my heart still pounds each time I am in the pot. Loads of fun.

You say you feel its time to stop, however you also cite that being stagnant or dropping a few bills is part of the reason. Are you saying that if you were up a few dollars these past weeks you would feel no need to 'relax for a little bit'?

Stop if you want. If you want to walk away - do it. Its that simple. Cash out and leave a minimal amount in your BR to play for 'beer money'

Oh and BTW - almost every GF hates gambling. Dont mention the fact that poker/football helped pay for her jewelry or her kids toys at X-mas.

My Fiancee actually encourages it, to win money for our wedding. I was surprised. She has actually gotten into it, wanting to bet on the BoSox alot during the playoffs. I guess I got a good one. Although some of her NFL picks are a bit ridiculous, we are up a decent amount. I find myself being the one saying "Ok, there is no reason to bet all of our money", which is actually very strange.

Just realize that the majority of gamblers never come out ahead and it is only a matter of time before you are selling shit to try and pay for the next "fix" and the next ante. Of course we don't know you personally, but this post is akin to an unsuccessful suicide attempt where you are saying "HELLO, I DON'T WANT TO DIE I JUST WANT HELP."

I have seen addictions (mainly alcohol) ravage good families and it is heartbreaking that the people having the problem don't see that they aren't only screwing up their lives but the lives of all those around.

If you see it as a problem (one that could get much worse) you owe it to yourself to give up all family (girlfriends included) and move to vegas and officially piss your life away in solitude and not hurt them.

Say this girlfriend becomes your wife. You've done nothing to curb your habit and you find you have to start hiding money from her to keep gambling. Eventually, you have 4 credit cards maxed out that she knows nothing about. The debt collectors start calling and you have to give them your cell number so they don't call your house. One day, they reach you on your cell while the two of you are together and she quickly grabs the cell and discovers that you are not only soon to be divorced, but also her credit rating is shot to hell for the next 7 years.

Hopefully you don't have a baby by this time because you are going to LOSE the child. Good luck getting visitation rights.

1.) Try to quit cold turkey for a week, just to see if you can. If you cannot make it seven days, it may give you a better perspective on the problem.

2.) Tell your girlfriend that you are quitting and ask her to help. It will motivate you if you know that you are not in it alone and that someone is watching you.

What to do...

1) Upgrade the computer and plop down a wad of cash on Rome: Total War
2) Take up painting miniatures as a hobby
3) Find a good tabletop game to play with all those miniatures you have painted
4) Take up boardgaming, still can be as competitive as online games, but there is nothing at stake, and you can make new friends in the process.

I'd like to thank everyone who responded, jokingly or otherwise. I just wanna clear up, I'm not a gambling addict and i'm in no danger of losing money, it's just that at some point the winning subsided so now it's time to step away for a bit while im comfortably ahead.
