View Full Version : Confused about PM training for Wingers

Ok...I'm still trying to get my Winger trainees in order and I finally purchased some Winger trainees...I'm training PM. After buying a couple I sat back and asked myself...ok what exactly is going to get trained?? Playmaking...or Winger??

Now I know that the wingers will train at half speed with PM training...but what exactly is going to improve? Is it their Playmaking skill or their Winger skill? And if it's only the PM skill...then what kind of trainees should I be looking for?

A quick look at the transfer wire shows that if you go for a passable PM...passable stamina and passable winger you're going to be paying a boat load of cash...which of course I don't have right now.

Something doesn't seem right with this...and I really need some help. :D

You'll get half PM training. To tell you the truth I usually don't even bother with trainees in those slots other than training some crappy youth pulls up a level or two in PM before selling them. Even that takes a long time though.

Yeah, I don't bother using the winger slots for real training either. I have one scrub backup winger and I use the other slot for my CD who I often play offensive.

I purchase 18 year olds solids at the beginning of the season for about $50k and then sell them for $300k at the end of the season.

I make sure to use those slots as well, exc/inad-passable 18-19 yo wingers seem to make pretty good profits for filling a half-slot, I've had a couple occasions of $400k profits for one week half-training investments.

Of course it could be like my last bunch which will take about a full season and will probably only make a $200-300k profit.

But, really, it's not worth it :)

I don't worry about training spots for my starting wingers but for my backups, why not? If nothing else, you play your starters in a close cup game and you only lose a half week training for the scrubs. But, I bought my half winger trainees- just naked pm trainees late in the season of their 17yo year for $200K and $90K and I'm going to be selling one at the end of this season when he bumps to outstanding and the other next season when he bumps to brilliant before I change training- that'll net me a good ~$2.5M return on $250K across less than 4 seasons.

Either that or use those spots to train up your starting central defender to give him some playmaking (tho, only if his PM is decent to start, otherwise you're needlessly risking injury) so he can play offensive central defender as CW suggested. But don't just completely waste those spots.

So if I were to go and train Wingers half speed....what do I look for in a trainee? Now granted I have low funds at the moment. So something like:

Passable Stamina
Passable Playmaking
Inadequate Winger

It seems like the "passable across the board" Winger is a bit spendy from what I've seen.

With really low funds I'd probably recommend a solid or passable winger with weak or inad PM. Inadequate PM isn't all that attractive but passable seems to be a point where they get lots of interest.

Don't even waste on the winger skill. By the time you're done training them (unless you're just planning on doing it for a season), they'll be too old for winger trainers to touch and, really, who wants a passable wing, form/out pm? The passable wing just isn't worth anything on a player like that.

So do you just suggest finding the best non-trainee wingers I can find and just worry about training my Midfielders?

Well, find a reasonably priced 17/18yo solid/pass playmaker (depending on what you can afford, but don't spend more than $200K) with decent stamina, inad or weak wing (so you don't completely lose it unless you play them both toward middle in friendlies), and any secondaries that don't cost you extra. Just train them at wing so they get half training (~1 level per season). And, if nothing else, you'll have a couple of ok backup middies (exc/form/out depending on how long you train) and you can sell them for a profit.

SI There's another way to use them? :)

I guess here we just have greatly differing strategies for those half slots, I have 2 or 3 longer-term high-level wingers that I'll keep for a few seasons and get the odd covering for injured IM training match. Last season with the other slot(s) I grabbed exc winger/ inad or pass PM players and sold them off as soon as they bumped.

Using that strategy with 2 slots (1 at the end of the season) I made $1,327,000 profit last season (before taxes). I did get lucky twice :p

Anyways Vick, take your pick, I think people like wingers with decent PM more then low(er) level IM's, plus I like having actual wingers more then an extra IM despite my best PM for most of last season was a winger or OCD (I didn't include him in my calculations)

I do train my wingers and I'm finally paying dividends this season -- I took an original player of mine at solid wing/solid passing/weak PM and trained him up to solid/solid/solid with excellent stamina. He sold for over $900K.

I would look to get the best winging skill you can afford (at least solid) with inad PM and train the PM up to at least solid. Try to get one with a little bit of passing too if you can. I personally look for 18 or 19 YO because winger trainers snatch up the good 17 YO.
