I am interested in playing the game, but I am pretty much a novice at soccer. How quickly will it take me to get accustomed to the rules of the game? Is there anywhere I need to go on the internet that will help me to learn? My son is a avid soccer player and I would like to learn the game for his benefit and my own.

Thanks in advance.

Whatever you do, make sure you never ever only add 5 VIP seats to your stadium.

Well I'm somewhat of a novice as well. My three best pieces of advice would be:

1) Read and ask questions on this board.
2) Read the rules on the Hattrick website.
3) Make sure you have Mr Wednesday give you the link to his newbie's guide. It 's a nice little outline of what's important once you get your squad.

Soccer knowledge helps some, but the game is sufficiently abstracted that it's not really necessary. There are a lot of resources (including this forum) for new players to help you get your team off the ground.

Grab CM/FM and play away. You'll be an addict in no time and learn weird crap like Bosman. :D

Thanks for the tips, guys. I went ahead and registered for a team in the game. There's only one other person ahead of me, so I should get a team fairly quick.

If your son is old enough, I imagine the start point in this game is about 12-13 years old, you should have him get a team too. That way you can do something together, learn the game together. Although, I think I would cry if my team lost to a 13 year old.

My son is seven, but I can bet you that he oculd probably whoop me at Hattrick. :D

I knew absolutely nothing about soccer before i played this game. A knowledge of soccer doesnt mean too much regarding hattrick, it doesnt hurt, but its not required...

I however have learned a good bit about the game since. I watch a little Fox Sports World now and then :D

The aforementioned newbie guide that I put together is at:
http://www.hal-pc.org/~enigma/hattrick/hattrick_newbie.html

Edit: At one point, I mention $10 000 "assessed value". That pre-dates a change in the game. Substitute 100 TSI.

my only advice to getting good at hattrick, and this advice is crucial. Start a training plan your second or third week. Just buy some 17 or 18yo passable players, and train them for a few years, I waited two seasons to do this, and I am just now getting competive enough to compete in div 4
