Dartmouth names Terry Dunn as their new head coach
Terry Dunn, assistant coach at Colorado for the past eight seasons, has been named the 26th coach of Big Green men's basketball, according to an announcement made today by Athletic Director Josie Harper.
"Terry brings a great breadth of experience and maturity to the program," said Harper. "He has an impressive resume and has played an instrumental role in rebuilding programs at Colorado and Colorado State. Although the search process was somewhat daunting with more than 100 applications, the search committee and others involved in the process did a fantastic job and we could not have ended up in a better place to help get Dartmouth basketball pointed in the right direction."
During his time at Colorado, Dunn helped guide the Buffaloes to three appearances in the NIT and two appearances in the NCAA tournament. Recognized as both a tenacious recruiter and a strong tactician, Dunn coached NBA first round draft pick Chauncey Billups and was actively involved in recruiting NBA second round draft pick Jaquay Walls to Boulder. Dunn's experience in developing post players has benefited 7-0 David Harrison, who is projected as a 2004 NBA draft pick.
"I want to thank President Wright, Josie Harper and [Senior Associate Director of Athletics] Brian Austin for this opportunity," said Dunn. "I'm certainly elated and my family is elated. We've got a great group of returning players and a strong incoming freshman class and I am excited to work with them. I couldn't be happier right now."
Prior to working as the Buffaloes' top assistant, Dunn was an assistant coach at Colorado State from 1994-96, helping to lead the Rams to an 18-12 season and a spot in the NIT in 1996. Dunn began his collegiate coaching career at Army (1989-91) before moving to Air Force for three seasons (1991-94).
A native of Raleigh, N.C., the 51-year old Dunn is a 1977 graduate of Northern Colorado, where he was a three-year letterwinner in basketball and track and field. During his senior season of track and field, Dunn established the Bear's 110-meter high hurdle record of 14.3 seconds.
Before entering the collegiate coaching ranks, Dunn was the head coach at Harrison High School in Colorado Springs (1982-89).
He hails from a coaching family as his twin brother Jerry is an assistant coach at West Virginia and former head coach at Penn State.
