The year is 2039, the place is Forest Grove, Oregon, a small rural city in northeast Oregon. With a population of around 20,000 with many of them working in either electronics, education and lumber. A very modest town with a very proud population. The value of hard work has been passed down through the many generations since the town was established in the late 1800's.

Our story will follow Gary Conzelman, a high school senior that has caused quite a stir around the town. He is the starting quarterback for the local high school and has been ranked as one of the top college recruits in the nation. At 6'2" and 212 lbs. He looks to fit into the current “mold” as the prototypical quarterback.

He seems to have the ability to sense pressure and is very good at avoiding the sack. His arm is strong but he needs to work on his accuracy. His biggest strength is his leadership. He has led an undermanned team into the playoffs in his junior season and is hoping to do the same this year.

The only thing that may keep interest down from some schools is his academic performance. He has just a 2.11 GPA and scored just 884 in his aptitude test. His interest in nature has led to him wanting to major in Geology as he wants something to fall back in if football doesn’t pan out. He has kept his feet firmly planted on the ground so far and has not let his success go to his head. HE knows that there is a world of difference between the competition in high school and what he will see at a major program in college.

Early in the season both Iowa and Marshall have contacted him and offered him a scholarship. He is not sure if he is going to visit either school as they are a little farther away from home than he wants to travel.

Georgia, Indiana, Oklahoma and Texas were soon to follow with the same offers. Except Indiana just offered him a chance to visit and not a scholarship immediately. Though it is very far away, Georgia has sparked his interest some as they are a true powerhouse in football. They have won 9 championships in the past 36 seasons. They have also produced 9 Players of the Year winners in that time span, 2 of which are current NFL starters and one may become one this season. The most famous being Jesse McDaniel, currently a 13 year vet in the NFL. He holds the college records with 1211 completions, 18,057 passing yards and 187 passing touchdowns in his career. Georgia is definitely a quarterback friendly place to play.

Maryland, Oregon State and USC were the next group of schools to offer Gary a scholarship. In that time period Indiana also ponied up a scholarship offer as they heard that other schools were making offers. He has scheduled a visit to USC and Oregon State. He likes the idea of being closer to home and the idea of being a local hero in college is very tempting. Oregon State also has the best reputation in Geology of the group.

Oregon jumped on the bandwagon next and Gary scheduled a visit there rather quickly, though they do not have the reputation in Geology that Oregon State does.

Florida State and Texas Tech stepped up to the plate next. Gary also decided to visit Iowa as well. They have a very good program both on the field and in the field of Geology. Iowa has 3 titles and is 5th in the nation in wins over the past 36 seasons.

Gary has decided to visit Indiana and has narrowed his list of options down to only the schools that he has visited (Indiana, Iowa, Oregon, Oregon State and USC). He did not feel comfortable enough with the current quarterback situation in Georgia as their starter is just a sophomore and looks to have a solid lock on the position for the next several seasons.

After taking a lot of time to think it over, he decided to go with the one close to home. Oregon State has an excellent Geology program and is about an hour and a half away from his home.

USC went on to win the National Championship in a close 31-27 thriller over Asbury Park. Oregon State finished 10-2 with a very good season and had a finalist for the Player of the Year, their departing senior quarterback.

Gary went on to make all-State with his legs. His team uses a run-heavy offense which limited him to just 1169 yards passing in 9 games with 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. He completed 62.3 percent of his passes. He ran for 10 touchdowns and over 1400 yards, averaging over 11 yards per carry. He ran the option very effectively and led his team to the playoffs again, though they would lose to a more talented team from a larger town with a larger talent pool.

Gary would be red-shirted for his entire freshman season as Brad Lujan would lead the team to a 10-2 mark as they would lose on New Years day to Missouri in the Angelica Bowl. He has struggles academically and currently had a 2.20 GPA and is in danger of failing Geology. He has applied himself to his studies, he just is not good at taking tests.

Indiana would go on to win the National Championship as it seems that schools that had attempted to sign him are all doing well.

Oregon State would start the season at #10 in the nation and they would host #19 Trenton week one. Gary would get the first start of his career and would look very nervous. Trenton’s blitzing defense would confuse him in a tightly contested 14-10 loss. Gary would go 11 of 28 for 160 yards with 1 interception. He also ran the ball 8 times for 8 yards, including 3 sacks. He had 1 tackle in the game and earned 2 stokes. They now are at 0-1 for the season.

They would host Hawaii in week two. The Rainbow Warriors would prove to be just what the doctor ordered as they would win 62-7 in a blowout. Gary would have a good day but would not play the full game because of it being a blowout. He was the player of the game for Oregon State. He went 9 of 14 for 112 yards with 3 touchdowns. He also ran the ball 3 times for 33 yards. He was given 1 stoke, a surprisingly small number. The win improves Oregon State’s record to 1-1.

Their next game is at Fresno State (1-0). Gary would earn player of the game honors in another blowout as they would win 51-4. He was 16 of 22 for 213 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. He ran the ball 7 times for 10 yards, including 1 sack. He was awarded 4 stokes for this game as they improve to 2-1.

Next they open their conference schedule at UCLA (2-0). Oregon State is now back up to #18 after their two big wins and are looking to make it three in a row as Gary gets his first big test. Though not having a good game, Gary would reach deep inside and lead his team on two 4th quarter touchdown drives for a come from behind 24-17 win to improve to 3-1. He was 12 of 34 for 171 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. He ran the ball 8 times for 3 yards, including 1 sack. He was awarded 5 stokes in the win.

After a week off, they move up to #11 and will host Stanford (3-2). With the game being tight, 14-10, heading into the 4th, Gary would throw two 4th quarter touchdowns, including a 57 yarder, to pull away for the 28-13 win. They would improve to 4-1. Gary had his best passing yards total of his young career in this one. He was 15 of 23 for 332 yards with 2 touchdowns. He ran the ball 7 times for 7 yards, including 2 sacks. He added 2 more stokes to his total.

Arizona (1-5) would come to town to play them next. Their coach had a tough time keeping his team focused this week as they seem to be overlooking Arizona. The coach would have little to worry about in a 48-7 route to improve to 5-1. Gary was 15 of 24 for 191 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. He ran the ball 5 times for 4 yards with 1 touchdown (his first rushing touchdown in college), including 2 sacks. 5 more stokes were added to his collection.

Midway through the year, Gary should be getting a passing grade for his performance on the field. He has thrown 12 touchdowns to only 5 interceptions and is averaging a little under 200 yards passing per game. His rating is 142.5.

California (2-5) is the next conference foe to come to town. Oregon State is now #9 in the nation and is a huge favorite in this one. There is starting to be a buzz about their game with USC in a few weeks. Oregon State would dispatch of California easily, 41-3, to improve to 6-1. Gary would earn player of the game honors again. He was 11 of 19 for 207 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. He ran 4 times for 20 yards with 2 touchdowns. He also had 1 tackle and recovered a fumble. He earned 3 stokes for the game.

The next team standing in their way would be Arizona State (4-3). They would have to go on the road for this one. They enter the game at #9 in the nation. A 26-0 shutout would help them improve to 7-1 and a USC loss to Washington State would put Oregon State in first place in the conference by themselves as the only team left unbeaten in the conference. Gary would have a modest game. He was 11 of 22 for 117 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He ran 9 times for 17 yards, including 2 sacks. HE earned 5 more stokes.

A tough game at Washington State (8-1) is now the biggest game of their season if they want to squeeze their way into a BCS Bowl. With the game 30-24 after the 3rd quarter, Oregon State would score twice in the 4th to put it away 43-24 to improve to 8-1. Gary was 13 of 25 for 212 yards with 3 touchdowns. He ran the ball 7 times for 29 yards, including 2 sacks. He also earned 3 more stokes.

Excitement is now in the air as they are #8 in the nation and travel to take on #2 USC (8-1). Oregon State wold jump out to a 10-0 1st quarter lead but then the USC defense would take over as they would confuse Gary and lead to several mistakes in a 38-13 win to show Oregon State who is the big dog of the conference. Gary was 15 of 31 for 221 yards with 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. He ran the ball 9 times for 7 yards, including 4 sacks. He was given stokes for the game.

Their final game of the season would be their rivalry game against Oregon (4-6). They have dropped to #13 in the polls and a BCS Bowl looks to be out of the question. They would take their frustrations out on Oregon in a 65-10 game. Gary would not play most of the second half in the blowout. He was 13 of 16 for 336 yards with 2 touchdowns. He ran the ball 3 times for 12 yards. He was awarded 3 stokes for the game. They have finished the regular season at 9-2.

Their fine season would be rewarded by an appearance in the Never-ending Hype Bowl against South Carolina (8-4). A fist quarter punt return and interception return would put them ahead 14-0 but South Carolina would pick away and get to within 14-12 in the 4th. Gary would lead the team on a 13 play, 90 yard drive that would take up almost five and a half minutes and would put the game away with a 3 yard touchdown pass to the tight end as he would win his first ever bowl game by a 21-12 score. He would have a sub-par game up until that point as he ended up 10 of 21 for 158 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. He ran the ball 8 times for 7 yards, including 3 sacks. He was awarded 3 stokes for the game.

Gary’s numbers: 12 games, 12 starts, 151 of 279 (54.1%) for 2430 yards with 22 touchdowns and 12 interceptions for a 144.6 rating, 78 carries for 157 yards (58 for 286 without the sacks) with 3 touchdowns, 20 sacks for 129 yards, 3 tackles, 1 fumble recovery, 3 late heroics, 39 stokes.

He is extremely popular in school and among his team-mates. His GPA has dropped to 1.96 as he is teetering on the edge with his grades. He is looking at getting a couple tutors to help him with his studies. Football has become his life and he has started to let his study time slip.

The game would be an easy 34-10 win to open the season 1-0. Senior receiver Cole Hampton would be playing his first game in over a year after having knee surgery and his return would be a cause for excitement. They return home to face Washington State (2-2) next as they still sit at #7. The game would be tied at 21 at the half and each team would exchange a pair of filed goals to get the game to overtime tied at 27. Gary was 13 of 36 for 261 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He ran 3 times for 15 yards, including 1 sack. He was awarded 1 stoke for the game.

Oregon State would open the season as the #11 ranked team in the nation. Their first opponent would be Eastern Michigan at home. After falling behind 3-0 early Warren McCollum and company would take over en route to a 38-13 season opening win. McCollum would rush for over 200 yards in the game and would get player of the game honors. Gary was 11 of 17 for 194 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. He ran 7 times for 5 yards, including 2 sacks. He earned 4 stokes.

Their next opponent would be Louisiana-Lafayette, again at home. They would out gain their opponents 473 to 46 in total offense in a one-sided 41-3 win. Gary was 14 of 30 for 229 yards with 3 touchdowns. He ran 9 times for 39 yards including 1 sack. He earned 5 stokes for the game. McCollum would rush for 190 yards and a pair of touchdowns and earn player of the game honors again. They head into an off week at 2-0.

After a week off, Fresno State (1-1) comes to town. Oregon State is now #9 in the polls. The Oregon State defense would come to play again in a 34-3 win to improve to 3-0. Gary had an off day. He was 9 of 22 for 151 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. He ran 6 times for 10 yards, including 1 sack. He was awarded 4 stokes for the game.

Another road trip, this time at Washington (2-2) as Oregon State has now moved up to #8 in the polls. It would again be the Warren McCollum show as he would hit the 200 yards rushing mark again in a 34-13 win. Gary was 14 of 21 for 161 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. They come home to face Washington State (3-1) and have moved up another position in the polls to #7. What was expected to be close was another blowout, 45-7. The win improves them to 6-0. Gary played little in the second half of the blowout. He was 7 of 11 for 187 yards with 1 touchdown. He ran the ball 4 times for 15 yards. He was given 3 stokes for the game. McCollum currently leads the nation in rushing yards per game and net yards rushing. He should break 100 yards for the second straight year in his next game.

They head back on the road to play at Arizona (2-4) and have moved up another place to #6. Gary would only play the first half in a 52-3 win. Warren McCollum would be taken out of the game with an injury but his backup Bernie Douthit would come through with over 100 yards and averaging over 5 yards per carry. Gary was 8 of 9 for 136 yards with 1 touchdown. He ran 2 times for -1 yard, including 1 sack. He was awarded 3 stokes in the win. After Oregon State would punt the ball away, Stanford would score on a 32 yard run to make it 35-31 with just 58 second left. He ran 5 times for 19 yards, including 1 sack. He had 1 tackle and was awarded just 2 stokes.

At 9-0 and #4 in the nation, their dream of a championship game may be just a couple more wins away. The next team standing in their way is a home game against Arizona State (4-5). A minute into the game they took the lead on a 64 yard punt return and never looked back as they won 55-14 to improve to 10-0. Gary played just half of the game. He was 8 of 11 for 115 yards with 3 touchdowns. He ran 1 time for -5 yards, it was a sack. He earned 2 stokes in the win.

They have remained at #4 in the polls and travel to face Oregon (8-2) in their rivalry game. Oregon is very pumped up for a chance to play spoiler against their cross state rival. Oregon would jump out to a 17-0 lead early in the 4th and would withstand a late rally to upset Oregon State 24-21. Gary had a lousy day which would be compounded when he would go down early int eh 4th and not return with a knee injury. He was 6 of 15 for 118 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He ran 2 times for 5 yards, including 1 sack. He also had 1 tackle and earned 1 stoke for the game. It looks like he is done for the season and will miss the bowl game, whichever one they make it to.

His grades have improved slightly, he now has a 1.84 GPA and he isn’t teetering as closely to the edge of probation. He is extremely popular among the student body, nearly legendary at this point as he has led the team to back to back conference titles for the first time in school history, and has many NFL scouts buzzing over him.

Oregon State currently leads the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 6.0 points per game.

What a home game is coming up as #6 USC (5-2) come to town as Oregon State has moved up to #5. There is a huge buzz around campus and around the state for this one. McCollum returned but Gary stepped it up as they proved to the nation that they are for real in a 45-7 destruction of USC. Gary was 20 of 31 for 297 yards with 4 touchdowns. He ran 7 times for 9 yards, including 1 sack. He was awarded 6 stokes for the game. They are now 8-0 with a week off to recuperate and get ready for the final three games in an attempt to make it to that coveted championship game.

They are now #4 in the polls and face #12 Stanford (8-0). This game would be a wild one. Oregon State would lead 17-14 at the end of the 3rd quarter. A touchdown run less than a minute into the 4th would give them a 24-14 lead. Stanford would answer with an 8 yard touchdown pass with just over 10 minutes left to make it 24-21. Gary would score on a 3 yard quarterback draw for put them back up by 10, 31-21. A 45 yard touchdown pass for Stanford with 6:29 to go would make it 31-28. After Oregon State would punt the ball away, Stanford would score on a 32 yard run to make it 35-31 with just 58 second left. A 4 play, 69 yard drive would end with Gary throwing a 31 yard touchdown pass for the 38-35 win in a thriller. Gary was 21 of 31 for 428 yards with 3 touchdowns but he also had 4 interceptions.

They would get selected to the Angelica Bowl against #3 Asbury Park (12-0). Against doctor’s recommendation Gary would suit up start the game. They would fall behind 7-0 but take over the game and win 27-7 thanks to another outstanding defensive effort. Gary was 10 of 18 for 206 yards. He ran 3 times for -1 yard, including 1 sack. He earned 2 stokes in the game.

Gary’s Numbers: 12 games, 12 starts, 142 of 236 (60.1%) for 2487 yards (2nd in the conference) with 26 touchdowns (1st in the conference) and 8 interceptions for a 178.1 rating (3rd in the nation this season, 2nd in the conference, tied for the 5th best single season rating in school history), 58 carries for 100 yards (44 for 195 without the sacks), sacked 14 times for 95 yards, 2 tackles, 3 late game heroics and 38 stokes.

They would open their season hosting Central Michigan. The team would feel the affects of a number of graduations, primarily along the offensive line and behind a struggling rushing attack would end up falling 31-17 to open the season 0-1. Gary would go 13 of 21 for 228 yards with 2 touchdowns. He ran the ball 10 times for -31 yards, including getting sacked 7 times thanks to the Swiss cheese offensive line. He earned 3 stokes, and should have been given a Medal of Honor for standing ni that pocket all game long.

The following week they would host Miami of Ohio and would dominate their over-matched opponents. The line would look a lot better but only time will tell if it’s because their opponents were not good. They would win 51-8 to even their record at 1-1. Gary won the player of the game honors and was 15 of 24 for 255 yards with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. He ran the ball 7 times for 35 yards. He earned 4 stokes in the win.

Next up is Fresno State on the road. The line would remain consistent in a 59-20 win that improved their record to 2-1. Gary again won player of the game honors. He was 17 of 20 for 261 yards with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. He ran the ball 3 times for 1 yard. He was also awarded 5 stokes for the game.

After a week off, they are at #11 and will open their conference schedule by hosting UCLA (0-3). They would dominate the game and out-gain UCLA by a 448-103 mark in a 42-7 route to improve to 4-1. Gary was 22 of 33 for 306 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. He ran the ball 8 times for 2 yards, including 2 sacks. He was awarded 7 stokes in the game.

They improve to #10 in the nation as they travel to play at Stanford (3-2). This game is a test to see just how they match up with some of the better teams in the conference. They pass the test with flying colors, 56-20. Gary was 17 of 30 for 350 yards with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. He ran the ball 5 times for 4 yards, including 2 sacks. He also had 1 tackle and earned 5 stokes in the win.

After 5 games, the team is 4-1 and #9 in the nation. Gary is 6th in the nation with a 195.0 rating. He is also tied for 10th with 17 touchdown passes. His 1400 yards passing is 4th among quarterbacks who have played just 5 games so far as well.

Looking to add to their success, they host #8 USC (4-2) for their next game as they hope to stay unbeaten in the conference. USC would strike first, within the first 2 minutes of the game on a 34 yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0. Within 2 minutes, Gary would throw a 23 yard strike to tie it at 7. A touchdown run by Oregon State and a field goal by USC would make it 14-10 after the 1st quarter. Both teams would get a field goal in the 2nd but Oregon State would also add a touchdown run to make it 24-13 at the half. Gary would lead the team on a touchdown drive, capped off by a 4 yard pass, on the opening drive of the second half and it would be 31-13 after the 3rd quarter. Gary would throw a pick that would get returned 78 yards to make it 31-19 as USC would miss the 2 point conversion, early in the 4th as they could have wrapped up the game. With under 7 minutes left, a touchdown run for USC made it 31-26. Gary answered that with a 10 yard touchdown pass with just over 2 minutes left to make it 38-26. USC would add a touchdown with less than a minute to go but not get the onside kick back as the final would be 38-33 in favor of Oregon State. Gary was 16 of 27 for 253 yards with 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He ran 9 times for 23 yards, including 2 sacks. He earned 3 stokes for the game.

They hope to pad their record next as they travel to Arizona (0-7). The Arizona defense would come to play and make it a more difficult game than it should have been. They would still pull it out 23-7 but not look dominating. Gary was 19 of 34 for 243 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. He ran the ball 7 times for -7 yards, including 4 sacks. He earned 3 stokes in the game.

They are now 6-1 and #8 in the coaches’ poll as they host Washington (5-2). Gary would earn player of the game in an easy 31-3 win. He was 14 of 21 for 237 yards with 3 touchdowns. He ran the ball 3 times for 18 yards and earned 3 stokes in the game.

The last win has jumped them up to #6 in the polls and will host Washington State (5-3) next. They would jump ahead in the game and never quite let Washington State get within reach as a late touchdown would make the final score 28-21 and look closer than it was. Gary was 16 of 30 for 306 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. He ran the ball 5 times for 6 yards, including 1 sack. He earned 5 stokes in the win.

Next up they travel to California (3-6). They would win easily on the road, 35-6 to improve to 9-1 (7-0 in the conference). Gary won player of the game honors. He was 14 of 25 for 218 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. He also ran the ball 10 times for 35 yards with 1 touchdown (a 15 yard scramble), including 1 sack. He would earn just 3 stokes for the game.

They are still #6 at 9-1 and head on the road for what could be a very tough game at cross-state rival Oregon (7-3). A win will give them yet another conference title with Gary at the helm. They would jump out early and ride a 28-10 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter to a 28-19 win. Gary was 15 of 27 for 192 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. He ran the ball 4 times for 3 yards, including 1 sack. He earned 2 stokes in the game.

They would make it into a BCS bowl and will play #3 Georgia (10-1) in the Angelica Bowl. Georgia would open the scoring with a field goal to make it 3-0 after the 1st quarter. A 19 yard touchdown pass by Gary and a pair of field goals would make it 13-3 at the half in favor of Oregon State. Each team would trade a touchdown pass, though Georgia would miss the extra point, in the 3rd to make it 20-9 after the 3rd quarter. Gary enters the draft with many experts having him as the top rated quarterback in the draft. Both he and linebacker Steve Boggs are expected to make it as 1st round draft choices from the team.

As Tampa Bay steps up with the 6th pick in the draft, they choose from Oregon State ... linebacker Steve Boggs. Gary would have to wait until he heard Kansas City call his name with the 9th pick in the draft. He would still be the first quarterback taken in the draft.

Gary’s agent would be a tough negotiator and they would turn down several offers before agreeing to a 5 year / $50.30 million deal. The negotiations would keep him out of most of the preseason games but he would still practice with the team and the Chiefs would turn over the reigns to him immediately. With him at the helm, they hope to get back to their winning ways of the past.

As far as the history of the NFL goes. Seattle has the best win/loss record over the past 40 season but no team can match the Chicago Bears 8 Super Bowl appearances and 6 championships over that span.

As he enters what should be a season that could define his career, he gets greedy and listens to his agent who convinced him that he should get an even better contract. This puts him in a very bad light with team management and ultimately gets him demoted to backup behind Zach Levine (who was signed from Chicago and was last season’s championship game MVP).

Through the first 5 games, the team is 4-1 and looking good behind their new starter. Midway through the 4th quarter, Zach gets sacked and injures his ankle. Gary is brought in and leads the team on a touchdown drive with just over 3 minutes left to give the team a 21-10 lead. They hang on to win 21-18. Gary was 3 of 4 for 26 yards with 1 touchdown. He also ran the ball 1 time for -1 yard. The win improves their record to 5-1.

The following week they head to Miami and after getting off to a quick start they would see a 24-20 lead vanish in the last 16 minutes of the game as they lost 37-24 to fall to 5-2. Gary was 22 of 38 for 246 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. He ran the ball 2 times for 16 yards and was sacked 2 times.

Gary would have a good “home coming” the next week as they would destroy Denver 34-3 in Kansas City. Gary was 16 of 25 for 158 yards with 1 touchdown. He ran the ball 1 time for 6 yards and was sacked 1 time.

Gary would get off to a quick start the next week as Buffalo came to town but then struggle as they hang on for a 27-14 win to improve to 7-2. He was 9 of 23 for 169 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. He ran the ball 1 time for -1 yard and was sacked 2 times.

Zach would return the next week at San Diego as they would get hammered 33-3. Gary came in at the end of the game when Zach re-aggravated his injury and was 1 of 1 for 3 yards.

Next week they host Detriot. Gary would start and earn player of the game honors in a 24-17 win. They would jump out 14-0 and coast for most of the game. Gary was 25 of 32 for 324 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He ran the ball 2 times for 17 yards, was sacked 2 times and fumbled the ball 1 time. They are now 8-3.

Baltimore came to town next in what would be a thriller. Kansas City would lead 24-15 with under 5 minutes left when a touchdown would narrow the gap to 24-22. After forcing a punt, Baltimore would drive for the winning field goal with 38 seconds left for a 25-23 final that dropped Kansas City to 8-4. Gary was 15 of 37 for 234 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He ran the ball 1 time for 2 yards and was sacked 2 times.

Zach would return for the rest of the season and lead them to an 11-5 record. Their wild card playoff game would be at the Jets. Gary would see late action in mop up with the team down 41-32 and 2 minutes left. He would lead them on a touchdown drive and convert the 2 point conversion for a 41-31 final. He was 2 of 3 for 19 yards with 1 touchdown.

Gary’s stats: 7 games, 5 starts, 91 of 160 (56.8%) for 1160 yards with 8 touchdowns and 4 interceptions fo an 85.9 rating, 8 carries for 39 yards, sacked 9 times, 1 fumbles, and a 3-2 record.

Gary’s career: 38 games, 36 starts, 707 of 1198 (59.0%) for 8434 yards with 51 touchdowns and 27 interceptions fo a 85.3 rating, 64 carries for 311 yards with 3 touchdown, sacked 66 times, 4 tackles, 10 fumbles, 3 4th quarter heroics and a 19-16-1 record. 2045 offensive rookie of the year

Zach retired due to recent nagging injuries and Gary sat down and seemed to have patched things up with the front office. He looks to be back in the driver’s seat with the team and will be the number one heading into training camp. It will be his job to lose and that he won’t do as he plays well in preseason while the other quarterbacks on the roster struggle.

The open the season at Denver. Gary struggles a bit but they find themselves up 17-10 midway through the 4th quarter. Denver manages to tie the game with about 3 minutes left and neither team is able to break the tie in regulation. After a few meaningless possessions, Denver finds themselves in field goal territory and wins the game with a 47 yarder for a 20-17 final. Gary was 20 of 36 for 185 yards with 1 interception. He ran 1 time for 4 yards, it was a touchdown run, and was sacked 1 time.

They head home for the first time next as Tampa Bay comes to town. The Chiefs play a solid game and win 22-13. Gary has an okay day, he was 19 of 32 for 244 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He ran the ball 5 times for 25 yards and was sacked 1 time.

They travel to Indianapolis next and can only manage 4 field goals in a 23-12 loss to drop to 1-2. Gary was 22 of 35 for 239 yards with 1 interception. He ran the ball 1 time for -2 yards, was sacked 6 times and fumbled the ball 1 time.

They remain on the road and head to Baltimore next. After being down 20-7 at the half, Gary leads the team on scoring drives at the end of the 3rd quarter and the beginning of the 4th to take a 21-20 lead. The Chiefs would add another field goal to make it 24-20 and the Ravens would settle for a field goal with over 2 minutes left to make it 24-23. The Chiefs would manage to make a couple first downs and run out the clock for the win. Gary was the player of the game. He was 24 of 35 for 283 yards with 3 touchdowns. He ran the ball 1 time for -1 yard and was sacked 3 times.

After a bye week they head home to host Cincinnati. They are unable to stop the Bengals’ running game in a 33-21 loss to fall to 2-3. Gary was 23 of 39 for 304 yards with 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. He ran the ball 1 time for 9 yards and was sacked 2 times.

They travel to Oakland (6-0) hoping to even out their record. With the score 28-14 at the half, the team comes out storming in the second half. A long drive on their first possession ends in a touchdown run to make it 28-21 with about 6 minutes left nit he 3rd quarter. They add a field goal late in the quarter on their next drive to make it 28-24 at the end of the 3rd. After forcing a 3 and out, they move to within field goal range and hit a 36 yarder to make it 28-27 with about 10 minutes left ni the game. With 8:11 left they get the ball back and go on an 11 play, over 6 minute drive, for the goa ahead field goal to make it 30-28. They would intercept the ball and then run the clock out for the win. Gary was player of the game. He was 23 of 34 for 320 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He ran the ball 2 times for 19 yards with a touchdown run (a 20 yarder in the 1st quarter) and was sacked 2 times.

Needing a win, they return home to host Cleveland (0-6). With 1:34 left they find themselves down 17-9 and at their own 20. They would go 80 yards in 7 plays, capped by a 27 yard touchdown pass to T.J. Overby as time expires. With the score 17-15 they line up for two. A draw play gets stopped short and they give Cleveland their first win of the season 17-15. Gary was 23 of 33 for 280 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He ran the ball 1 time for 9 yards and was sacked 3 times.

After their disappointing loss they head back on the road to Pittsburgh (3-4). Each team needs this game. They would fall behind 13-10 and get to 16-10 with the ball in Pittsburgh territory with under a minute left but turn the ball over on downs. They drop to 3-5 with the 16-10 loss. Gary was 16 of 34 for 211 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. He ran the ball 4 times for 24 yards, was sacked 2 times and fumbled the ball 1 time.

A big home game against Denver (6-2) awaits them. Gary would look very sharp on their way to a 28-20 win. He would win player of the game honors. He was 17 of 19 for 276 yards with 1 touchdown. He ran the ball 3 times for 4 yards and was sacked 1 time. They are now 4-5.

Next they head to San Diego (4-5). The loser of this game is pretty much out of the playoffs, barring a major miracle. The Chiefs would jump out early and build a 27-0 lead after the 3rd quarter on their way to a 27-14 win to improve to 5-5. Gary would be the player of the game. He was 25 of 39 for 185 yards with 1 touchdown. He also ran the ball 4 times for 15 yards.

They travel to Carolina (4-6) for a non-conference game. Gary has a disappointing performance in a 26-13 loss. He was 23 of 41 for 235 yards with 2 interceptions. He also ran the ball 2 times for 8 yards and was sacked 3 times.

They are now 2 games out of the wild card spot as they sit at 5-6 heading into their home game with Miami (7-4) who is currently one of the wild card teams. After fallnig behind 7-0 in the 1st quarter, they would score the last 20points in a 20-7 win to improve to 6-6. Gary was the player of the game. He was 17 of 27 for 227 yards with 1 touchdown. He ran the ball 2 times for 14 yards and was sacked 1 time.

They are still 2 games out of the wild card as all they did was knock Miami out of one spot and Denver took their place. They travel to Atlanta (6-6) who is in a similar position in the NFC. Gary would have a solid game but they would lose 34-23 to drop to 6-7. He was 24 of 41 for 277 yards with 1 touchdown. He ran the ball 1 time for 15 yards and was sacked 3 times.

They need a miracle and then some help now. It gets tougher for them as Oakland (11-2) comes to town looking for revenge. The jump to a 20-3 halftime lead en route to a 26-9 win to improve to 7-7. Gary wins player of the game despite mediocre numbers. He was 13 of 26 for 148 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. He ran the ball 2 times for 14 yards and was sacked 1 time. They are still alive as Denver lost this week, though they are just barely staying alive.

New Orleans (3-11) comes to Kansas City next. This is a game they must win, and should. Gary has an okay game in a 34-20 win that improves them to 8-7. He was 11 of 20 for 113 yards with 3 touchdowns. He ran the ball 1 time for -1 yard, was sacked 2 times and fumbled the ball 1 time. A Denver win knocks them from playoff contention.

Their final game of the season is at home against San Diego (6-9). Gary would win player of the game honors in a 24-13 win. The game wasn’t even that close as they had a near 2:1 time of possession ratio. He was 23 of 37 for 337 yards with 1 touchdown. He ran the ball 1 time for 7 yards and was sacked 1 time.

A very uneventful off-season and preseason has led up to the final year of his rookie contract. Gary played well in what action he saw in the preseason and did not get hurt, which is the most important thing for him and the team. He enters the season costing his team over 13 million in cap money and with the spotlight on him. This may need to be the year that he shows how far he can lead this team.

Their first game is at Oakland. Gary jumps out to a quick start with 2 first quarter touchdown passes on the way to a 24-12 victory as they start the season on a high note. Gary is named player of the game. He was 18 of 29 for 25 yards with 3 touchdowns. He ran the ball 3 times for 12 yards and was sacked 2 times.

Week 2 they host the New York Giants (0-1). The game would look like an easy win with the Chiefs up 31-14 in the 4th but the Giants would score 17 points in the final 8 minutes to tie and force overtime. The Giants would get the ball first and drive for a game winning field goal as the Chiefs fall 34-31 to drop to 1-1. Gary was 23 of 31 for 228 yards with 1 touchdown. He ran the ball 3 times for 24 yards, including a 2 yard scramble for a touchdown early in the 3rd, was sacked 2 times and fumbled the ball 1 time.

Week 3 they are at Baltimore (1-1). The Ravens defense would shut down the Chiefs offense in a 19-10 win as the Chiefs fall to 1-2. Gary was 20 of 36 for 244 yards with 2 interceptions. He ran 1 time for 6 yards, it was the team’s only touchdown, and was sacked 6 times.

After a week off, they travel to Tennessee (2-1) hoping to get back on track. With the Titans up 20-16 the Chiefs would be driving with under 2 minutes left in the game. An errant pass from Gary would be picked off and returned 73 yards to make it 27-22. Gary would lead the team on a quick touchdown drive but they would miss the two point conversion and fail to recover the onside kick for a 27-22 final. They are now 1-3. Gary was 25 of 36 for 334 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He ran the ball 2 times for 15 yards and was sacked 5 times.

After 4 games, they are 1-3 and are tied for last in the division. San Diego sits at 4-1 atop the division. Gary has thrown for over 1000 yards putting him on a pace for over 4000 for the season. He also has 5 touchdown passes and a 92.9 rating.

Next they come home to host Houston (2-3). With the Chiefs up 17-14 after the 3rd quarter the Texans would go on a long drive to tie the game with a field goal with just over 7 minutes left. After an unsuccessful drive by the Chiefs, the Texans would mount a long touchdown drive to score with just over 2 minutes left and make it 24-17. The Chiefs would turn the ball over on downs and lose 24-17 to fall to 1-4. Gary was 15 of 23 for 173 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He ran the ball 3 times for 18 yards, was sacked 2 times and had 1 tackle.

Their 4 game skid is rewarded by a trip to Indianapolis (4-2). An early 46 yard touchdown pass would lead the team on to a 24-13 win as they seemed to click on the opening drive and played their best game of the season as a team. Gary was thed player of the game. He was 18 of 26 for 242 yards with 1 touchdown. He ran the ball 4 times for 18 yards, including a 4 yard touchdown run late in the 3rd quarter and was sacked 3 times.

Hoping to start a winning streak, they come home to face Jacksonville (1-5). Running back Zach Wilhite would carry the load with 180 yards on 42 carries and a touchdown in a 31-17 win as they improve to 3-4. Gary was 18 of 25 for 225 yards with 1 touchdown. He ran the ball 4 times for 18 yards.

With a chance to pull to .500 they get Oakland (2-5) coming to town. They would build a 28-10 lead and coast to a 28-19 win to improve to 4-4. Gary was 15 of 26 for 150 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He ran the ball 1 time for 8 yards and was sacked 1 time.

At the midway point of their season they are 4-4 and are in second place, 2 games behind San Diego (6-2) in the division. They are just 1 game behind Indianapolis for the second Wild Card spot. Gary has thrown for over 1800 yards, 10 touchdowns and has a rating of 93.7. He has completed 65.5 percent of his passes. He has already run for 3 touchdowns, a career high.

The second half of the season starts out at Denver (4-4) with a big division game. They would get man-handled 37-17 to drop to 4-5 as many questions would arise about the team and if they are playoff caliber. Gary was 14 of 32 for 225 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He ran the ball 2 times for 21 yards and was sacked 1 time.

They come home for a near must win game against San Diego (7-2). The Chiefs would cause 3 fumbles and out-gain the Chargers by over a 4 to 1 margin on the ground in a surprising 38-7 blowout. Gary was 12 of 25 for 190 yards with 2 touchdowns an 1 interception. He ran the ball 2 times for 16 yards and was sacked 2 times.

They head to play at struggling Philadelphia (2-8) next in what looks like a winable game for them. The Eagles would outplay the Chiefs in a 17-7 win. The Chiefs hang their heads as they fall to 5-6. Gary was 19 of 33 for 199 yards. He ran the ball 1 time for 7 yards and was sacked 2 times.

They head home for a must win game against Buffalo (2-9). They should now know not to take a team like this for granted. Gary would throw 2 key interceptions in a surprising 38-28 loss that may have shattered any playoff chances the team had as they fall to 5-7. Gary was 21 of 36 for 239 yards with 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He was sacked 3 times.

After 12 games, the Chiefs are 5-7 and in third place in their division. They are 2 games out of the last Wild Card spot but have 4 teams to jump to get there. Gary has thrown for over 2700 yards with 17 touchdowns. His rating has dipped to 87.4 and his completion percentage has dropped to 60.8.

They need to sweep the final quarter of the season. They start out at home against Dallas (5-7). The Chiefs would struggle moving the ball and see their playoff hopes fall in a 7-0 loss. The crowd is really getting on Gary as he struggled in the must win game. He was 22 of 41 for 200 yards with 2 interceptions. He ran the ball 2 times for 19 yards, was sacked 1 time and had 1 tackle.

With their season pretty much over they head to San Diego (10-3) as a huge underdog. Late in the 2nd quarter, a touchdown pass by Gary would make it 7-0. The Chargers would get a field goal right before the half to make it 7-3. Another touchdown pass early in the 3rd would make it 14-3 but the Chargers would answer to make it 14-10 after the 3rd quarter. A field goal early in the 4th by the Chargers would make it 14-13. The Chiefs would be unable to move the ball but their defense would cause a fumble and an interception in their own territory on the final two San Diego drives to preserve the 14-13 upset. Gary was named player of the game. He was 19 of 30 for 244 yards with 2 touchdowns. He ran the ball 5 times for 18 yards and was sacked 3 times.

They head to Washington (8-6) with a chance to play spoiler as Washington is in a tight playoff race. The Redskins would get an early lead and the Chiefs would keep getting close but could never quite get there in a 24-21 loss to fall to 6-9. Gary was 21 of 40 for 364 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He ran the ball 3 times for 16 yards and was sacked 2 times.

Their final game of the season is at home against Denver (9-6). The game would be tied 7-7 with 3:26 left in the game. Gary would lead the team on a 7 play, 78 yard touchdown drive to take a 14-7 lead with 1:07 left to play. Denver would strike quickly on a 2 play 65 yard drive to tie it at 14. Time would run out with the Chiefs driving to the Bronco 36. After a 3 and out for the Chiefs in overtime, the Broncos would go 65 yards in 8 plays for the winning touchdown in a 20-14 final. Gary was 20 of 35 for 362 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. He ran the ball 2 times for 16 yards and was sacked 2 times.

Gary enters the free agent market with one stubborn agent. His agent wants him to pursue a 5 year deal worth over 150 million dollars. He is getting a little weary of his agent but will listen to her for a while, hoping that someone ponies up before he has to lower his offer too much.

After a few days, he began talking with the New York Jets. They offer him less than his asking price, but it is still a whopping 5 year / 144 million dollar deal with over 30 million in signing bonus. After waiting a while and getting no other offers, Gary signed his name on the dotted line and will play for the Jets with one of the biggest contracts in the league.

Despite the big contract, Gary was not accepted that quickly by the fans as he will be replacing Ike Patterson who played with the team for 12 years and is in the last year of his contract. He will now be demoted to second string for the final season of his contract.

Gary looked very steady during the preseason and has begun to win a little support from some of the local talk show radio hosts. A couple of perfectly thrown deep balls have brought back visions of Chad Pennnigton to Brett Thierry.

They open the season at home against division rival Miami. Three touchdown passes later and it’s a 28-17 opening day win. Gary had his share of problems with 3 interceptions thrown but the team ran the ball for almost 250 yards and controlled the clock. He was 15 of 27 for 226 yards with 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. HE ran the ball 4 times for 27 yards.

Week two is a tough home game against Minnesota (1-0). With the score 14-10 in the 4th, Minnesota would go on a monstrous 13 play, 96 yard drive that ate up over 8 minutes to score a touchdown and make the game 21-10 with under 3 minutes to go. Gary led a quick strike touchdown drive and converted the two point conversion to make it 21-18 with 1:10 left to go. After recovering the onside kick, Gary led a 3 play drive that led to the game tying field goal with second left. Viking corner back Jeffrey Hampton would get a lateral on the kickoff, make two men miss and turn on the jets as he would go 79 yards for the game winning touchdown on the ensuing kickoff for a 28-21 final. Gary was 19 of 29 for 194 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. He ran the ball 2 times for 14 yards.

Another tough week coming up for the Jets as they travel to Houston (2-0). Gary would earn player of the game honors in what would be a 30-9 route as they improve to 2-1. He was 19 of 31 for 209 yards with 2 touchdowns. He ran the ball 1 time for -1 yard. Through 3 games, he has not yet been sacked.

Week 4, a week Gary circled on his calendar as they travel to Kansas City (1-2) in his first game against his old team. The game would not go as he hoped as the Chiefs would jump out to a 21-0 halftime lead on their way to a 21-11 final. Gary was 19 of 35 for 231 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He ran the ball 2 times for 12 yards and was sacked 3 times. Gary injured his ankle in the game and it looks to be a mild sprain.

After 4 games, the Jets are 2-2 and tied with Miami and Buffalo atop their division. Gary has thrown for 860 yards with 8 touchdowns and has an 85.3 rating. He has caused a bit of a stir, both positive and negative, on the local talk radio.

They start the next quarter of the season at New England (0-4). This has all the ingredients of trouble with a winless division rival looking for their first win of the season. Three touchdown passes later and it’s a 27-11 win for the Jets. Gary would be named player of the game. He was 20 of 30 for 230 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. Prior to the preseason, Gary was contacted by his agent with news of a trade. He has been traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is actually happy to be leaving the Jets as they were a train wreck waiting to happen. They entered the season with just 14 players under contract and were rebuilding from there.

Gary would looks solid, but not spectacular, during the preseason for the Steelers. He would do enough to earn the job as the starter (which was pretty much assumed after the trade).

Week 1 they travel to Cleveland to open the season. After tying the game at 7 in the second quarter, the Steelers defense would allow back to back touchdown drives to get behind 21-7. A late touchdown pass by Gary would make the final 21-14 as they fall to 0-1. Gary was 18 of 29 for 234 yards with 1 touchdown. He ran the ball 1 time for 8 yards and was sacked 2 times.

St. Louis (1-0) comes to town week 2. The Rams would lead 20-3 after the third quarter and Gary would lead the team on two touchdown drives in the 4th quarter but they would fall short 20-17. Gary was 22 of 49 for 212 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. He ran the ball 4 times for 27 yards and was sacked 3 times.

It doesn’t get any easier as they head to Jacksonville (2-0) next. They would play a solid game and lead 17-6 late in the 4th when Jacksonville would return a punt for a touchdown with just over 2 minutes left. After missing the two point conversion they would hold the Steelers to 3 and out and get the ball back with 44 seconds left on their own 39. The Steelers defense would rise to the occasion and force them to turn the ball over on downs and they get their first win, 17-12. Gary earned player of the game honors. He was 17 of 29 for 184 yards with 2 touchdowns. He ran the ball 1 time for -1 yard, was sacked 2 times and fumbled the ball 1 time.

Looking to even their record, they travel to San Diego (0-3). The Steelers would take and early 13-0 lead and ride that to a 19-14 win to improve to 2-2. Gary was names player of the game. He was 21 of 28 for 204 yards with 1 touchdown. He ran the ball 1 time for 6 yards and was sacked 2 times.

After 4 games, the Steelers are 2-2 and trail both Baltimore (4-0) and Cleveland (3-0) in the division. Gary has thrown for 834 yards and 5 touchdowns with a rating of 82.0.

Week 5 they come home to host Cincinnati (2-2). The Steelers would lead 24-17 late in the 4th when the Bengals tied it with under 2 minutes to go. After a couple unsuccessful drives in overtime, Gary would lead the team for the game winning field goal as they improve to 3-2 with a 27-24 win. Gary was named player of the game. He was 27 of 41 for a season high 369 yards with 3 touchdowns. He ran the ball 5 times for 23 yards and was sacked 2 times.

Denver (2-2) is the next team to come to the Steel City. Gary would earn player of the game honors in a game the Steelers took a 24-7 lead and held on for a 24-21 win (after Denver scored the last one with just 30 seconds left). Gary was 17 of 35 for 196 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He ran the ball 3 times for 11 yards. The win improves their record to 4-2.

After a bye week, they travel to Oakland (2-5). With the Steelers up 21-14, the Raiders would tie the game with under 3 minutes left. Gary led the team on a 7 play, 55 yard drive for the go ahead field goal with 33 second left. The Steelers would intercept a last second desperation throw to seel the 24-21 victory and improve to 5-2. Gary was player of the game. He was 25 of 45 for 331 yards with 2 touchdowns. He was sacked 1 time.

Gary would see his first team come to town next, Kansas City (3-4). Gary would earn player of the game honors in what would be a much better result than last season when he played them as they win 27-17 to improve to 6-2 and now have a 6 game winning streak. Gary was 24 of 31 for 277 yards with 2 touchdowns. He ran the ball 4 times for 12 yards and was sacked 2 times.

At the midway point of their season the Steelers are 6-2. They are in a wild card position but trail Baltimore (9-0) in their division. Gary has thrown for 2007 yards and 13 touchdowns with a rating of 91.5.

They start the second half of their season hosting Cleveland (3-5). The Browns are on a 5 game skid while the Steelers are on a 6 game winning streak. The Steelers get out 31-7 and coast to a 31-21 win to improve to 7-2. Gary is named player of the game. He was 29 of 46 for 308 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. He was sacked 1 time.

Next up is a big game as Baltimore (9-0) comes to town. The Steelers are their daddy as they snap the Ravens perfect season with a 23-6 win. Another player of the game performance for Gary. He was 20 of 29 for 189 yards with 1 touchdown. He ran the ball 2 times for 31 yards, including a 19 yard scramble for a touchdown. They are now 8-2 and just one game behind Baltimore in the division.

They head back on the road to play at Seattle (5-5) next. This game has the potential to be a let-down game after the big win and it’s against a team that need to win to stay in the hunt. With the Steelers leading 23-17 midway through the 4th quarter, the Seahawks would go on a 13 play, 93 yard touchdown drive to take a 24-23 lead with just over 1 minute left in the game. On their second play, an errant pass from Gary would get picked off and the Seahawks would run the clock out for the 24-23 upset to drop the Steelers to 8-3. Gary was 18 of 28 for 214 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. He ran the ball 4 times for 44 yards.

Next the head back home to host a tough Miami (7-4) team. The game would be a battle of field goals that Miami would win 12-9 on a last second field goal to drop the Steelers to 8-4. Gary was 15 of 28 for 196 yards. He ran the ball 2 times for 14 yards.

After 12 games the Steelers are 8-4 and in a wild card spot. They trail just Baltimore (11-1) in the division. Gary was thrown for 2914 yards with 19 touchdowns and has a 91.7 rating.

The Steelers start the final stretch of their season at Arizona (5-7). With the Steelers up 25-7 after the 3rd quarter, the team would go completely cold and allow the Cardinals to score 17 points to tie the game in the 4th and send it to overtime. After the Steelers would go three and out, the Cardinals went on a 10 play, 79 yard, touchdown drive to win the game 30-24 and drop the Steelers to 8-5 as they are reeling with three straight losses. Gary was 21 of 32 for 170 yards with 1 touchdown. He ran the ball 5 times for 33 yards and was sacked 1 time.

It only gets tougher as they head to Cincinnati (7-6) who is looking to climb into that last playoff spot and knock off the Steelers. A defensive breakdown would lead to a 37-27 loss to drop the Steelers to 8-6 with 4 straight losses. Gary was 19 of 35 for 255 yards with 1 touchdown. He ran the ball 3 times for 13 yards and was sacked 1 time.

They head home for their last home game of the season against San Francisco (4-10), a much needed game. Gary would play a good game but the team would not in a stunning 28-25 loss that drops them to 8-7. Gary was 19 of 28 for 255 yards with 2 touchdowns. He ran the ball 6 times for 35 yards, including a 1 yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown.

They are now 8-7 and have an outside chance at a wild card spot but need to win at Baltimore (13-2) to earn that spot. Baltimore is looking for the best kind of revenge, that which keeps the Steelers from making the playoffs. Before their game started, they would see that Miami had lost which means a win and they are in. Their first drive ended in touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead. Baltimroe would tie it in the 2nd and it would be 7-7 at the half. A field goal by the Steelers would give them a 10-7 lead but the Ravens would go ahead early int eh 4th with a touchdown to make it 14-10. With the ball at their own 16 and 3:20 to go, the Ravens would try to put the final nail in the Steelers’ coffin but an aggressive play call would lead to an interception that would be returned 28 yards for the go ahead touchdown to give the Steelers a 17-14 lead. The Ravens started at their 33 with 3:12 left in the game and went on an 8 play, 38 yard drive that set up a 46 yard game tying field goal attempt. The kick was wide right and the Steelers ran the clock out for the 17-14 win. They would end up 9-7 and end up as the final wild card team. Gary was named the player of the game. He was 15 of 26 for 172 yards with 1 touchdown. He ran the ball 3 times for 16 yards and was sacked 2 times.

Gary’s first career playoff start would be at Jacksonville, who won their division with an 8-8 record. Their would be 3 games in which the home team had a worse record than the road team due to Jacksonville, Kansas City and Seattle all winning their division with 8-8 records. With the team trailing 20-13 and 3:29 left, Gary led the team on an 11 play, 79 yard, touchdown drive to tie the game with 55 seconds left on a 21 yard touchdown strike. The game would go to overtime 20-20. After a couple of unsuccessful drives, the Steelers would return a punt to the Jacksonville 16 and take it in for a touchdown 4 plays later for a 26-20 win. Gary was named player of the game. He was 29 of 47 for 365 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. He ran the ball 2 times for 13 yards, was sacked 4 times and fumbled the ball 1 time.

Despite beating Baltimore twice this season they enter the next round as a 12 point underdog at Baltimore. Gary would again earn player of the game honors as the Steelers would hand the Ravens 3 of their 4 losses this season in a 28-7 game. Gary was 15 of 27 for 221 yards with 2 touchdowns. He ran the ball 1 time for -2 yards, was sacked 3 times and fumbled the ball 1 time.

This would set up a very interesting match-up against the team that traded him in the off season as they head to New York to play the Jets. Gary would get hit late on a play early in the 2nd quarter and not get up with what would end up being a broken foot. The team would go on and lose 21-14. Gary was 9 of 15 for 80 yards with 1 touchdown. Gary’s replacement was just 13 of 33 as that play looked to be the turning point of the game. The Jets would go on to beat the Seahawks in the Super Bowl.
