Green Day's American Idiot

Well, the hype is real. The album is incredible, and Ive only heard through track 8. If you dont like Green Day's sound you might be turned off of it, but as an album, it should win some awards.

Yep, the album is utterly amazing. I put it on my iPod from my bro's CD last week and it's all I've been listening to. "Jesus of Suburbia" is utterly amazing. Though I still perfer "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", maybe because of real life circumstances.

Personally I really thought it was their best effort. Better than Dookie, simply because of the lyrical greatness. Who would have thought that GREEN DAY of all bands makes an album with a powerful social/political message ;).

well i don't think it's that far-fetched. Punk/alternative/whatever you wanna call them has a long history of making socially relevent songs. It's really just here in the states where the talentless bands with the "look" are elevated over the ones with more to say in their music and the industry drives a "dumbing down" of the message of songwriters that we don't get to hear the power of music a lot.

Oh, I agree. But those punk bands, like The Clash and The Sex Pistols, I could see making a politically charged album. Bands like Green Day and the Offspring and that whole punk-pop scene, I wasn't seeing it in their earlier stuff. Though the Offspring has had their powerful songs as well (though only rarely). This was politically charged the whole way through.

I had jost popped in this CD when I saw this thread. After having listened to it I would have to say that this is the best album I've listened to in a long time. It truely feels like a unified piece of work, with a provocative message, without feeling like the same song over and over again. Far more sophisticated than anything they've ever put out. I'm glad I listened to it.

Barkeep, and that is why I think this album may be remembered longer than any other work that Green Day has done. You hit the nail on the head. It feels like a unified piece of work. Hell, like a musical masterpiece where one song feels on the others and refers back to earlier ones in the album. Hearing singles out of order doesn't do it justice.

There was an article recently in either Q or Revolver about Green Day, and how they were trying to decide if they wanted to do a photo shoot with a burning American flag. Eventually the drummer talked them out of it, because they thought it was illegal.

Of course, it's not illegal to burn a flag. I'm not saying that makes them morons, but I'm a bit reluctant to read too much into their "insightful" political views. I think they're probably as insulated from the real world as any hollywood celebrity, and have been for the better part of a decade.

That being said, I've bought both the title track and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" from iTunes. Guess I like the music while disregarding the message. :)

One of the big reasons why I think the article may be wrong is because if they thought it was illegal, I don't think that would stop Green Day from doing it.

That being said, even if they were misinformed on that, I don't think that cheapens the message they have in their songs. Those words don't get tainted from something outside.

I'm just saying I don't think they're as smart as some people make them out to be.

I don't think anyone is making them out to be all that smart. They have just created an intelligent album where the songs flow together and form out a unified, cohesive work with a powerful political message. You don't have to be that smart to make smart music. Frankly, I'm not sure how smart The Clash were or The Sex Pistols were, but it doesn't matter.

American Idiot is one of the most overrated albums of recent times. Although a decent record, it's not near as good as people make it out to be.

Good point, lots of Democrats voted for both. I'm sure they won't remember now that Green Day saved them. :)
