ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (Jan. 3, 2005) -- Travis Henry (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/235216) wants out of Buffalo (http://www.nfl.com/teams/news/BUF) because he's unhappy with the prospect of spending another season as Willis McGahee (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/396170) 's backup.
"I want to go somewhere where I can be a starter and play, and be a big contributor," Henry said, a day after the Bills' missed the playoffs with a season-ending 29-24 loss to Pittsburgh (http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/recap/NFL_20050102_PIT@BUF).
Henry, who started for three years and has a year left on his contract, made it clear he wouldn't accept another season with a secondary role.
"I'm a starter. I've been starting since I've been in this league," Henry said. "I know the role that I was given this year. I didn't like it, but I dealt with it."
Asked whether he considered himself as good as gone, Henry said: "Yeah, most definitely."
Henry added he's confident there are other teams that would be interested in acquiring him.
Henry's comments aren't exactly surprising. In August, he said he would be unhappy if he lost his starting job, adding he expected the Bills to trade him or McGahee, Buffalo's first-round pick last year.
Henry lost his starting position to McGahee in October after the Bills got off to a 1-5 start.
McGahee, who missed his entire rookie season after blowing out his left knee in his final college game at Miami, was credited with sparking the Bills' turnaround, in which the team won six straight and nine of 11 before the loss to Pittsburgh.
Buffalo (9-7) was 9-2 with McGahee as a starter, and 7-0 when he rushed for 100 yards.
Henry had started since the team selected him in the second round of the 2001 draft out of Tennessee. He was coming off consecutive 1,300-yard seasons, and showed resilience last year playing through a rib injury and a broken bone in his right leg.
But he had a tough start this year, due in part to the Bills unsettled offensive line.
In five starts, Henry had 300 yards, no touchdowns, and missed one game with a foot injury. He spent five games as a backup before missing the remainder of the season after tearing ligaments in his right ankle in Buffalo's 38-9 win at Seattle on Nov. 28.
Although he eventually befriended McGahee, Henry initially described the Bills' decision to draft McGahee as a "slap in the face."
Henry kept quiet about his demotion over the past two months, but he said, "I don't think I lost my job. It was given away ... so let's get that straight."
He then added, "It is what it is. They made the decision when they drafted him. That's what they want, that's what they got. I don't know what else to tell you.
"I had a good career here," Henry said. "I learned a lot here ... I look at it as a good experience."

I wonder what teams he's thinking of?

I can't come up with the second RB from Arizona and the Tampa Bay guys, but it seems that most teams are pretty much settled.
The best bet to get a job is if someone goes out as a FA (Seattle?), a team unsettled at RB (Miami/Tampa?) or a team looking for a young replacement (Pittsburgh/NY Giants/Arizona?).

Tampa or Oakland might be a good bet but Buffalo won't get much at all for him.

I think he could certainly play over the likes of Michael Pittman, and I think he's comprable to a whole bunch of guys in the league. Staley, Wheatley, Dunn/Duckett, the many heads in Minnesota, oh and Westbrook in Philly. The deal is, I'm not sure some of those places would be in the market, eventhough especially because he appears to only be comprable to their current solutions.
I am a fan. I drafted him in my keeper league, but I also recognized that he was a starter in the league because the Bills had no one else to keep him down. I also felt he was a servicable starter, far from the kind of guy who can carry a team. There was also no doubt in my mind that Mcgahee was going to replace him this year. In that keeper league, I let Travis go, and picked up Mcgahee as a FA.

Alot of teams in the league would take Henry as their starter.
Cincinnati might lose Rudi Johnson because they don't want to pay him, but they drafted Chris Perry last year, but we all know how well Michigan backs do in the pros.
Oakland, Miami, Tampa and Arizona all could use better RBs and Chicago should probably make a move on him.

San Fran could get him. Barlow may or may not be the answer.

They should have traded Travis at the start of this season, his pansy ass is always hurt.

I think pittsburgh will stick with staley and Bettis. If bettis doesnt come back, for their prices, Verron Haynes and Willie Parker(dude is fast as hell) will both probably do as good as henry, and wont cost nearly as much.

I think they are already paying him a good chunk though.

They are very high on Thomas Jones, and would consider Henry a downgrade, and Anthony Thomas is certainly an adequate backup.

Chicago has shown no ability to evaluate offensive talent.

not only are most teams set at RB, but aren't there like a boatload of RBs in the upcoming draft?

I would love to see something like the NFL.com wire report in FOF sometime in the future. (I think SI does something like this in FM)
Gets me thinking, SI + Solecismic just might not be a bad idea.

I think Henry's best opportunity would actually be Arizona. Emmitt and Hambrick are not the long term answer. Henry should be able to beat them both out and be an upgrade. Either way, I doubt the Bills get a lot for him.

Re: the many heads in Minnesota
You can't possibly be serious. Overall (and four deep), Minnesota has the best situation at runningback in the entire league. Mewelde Moore is a NFL starter and I wasn't even that concerned when Bennett and Smith were both out. I won't argue that Moe Williams is more talented than Henry, but he has a role on the team. Just an unreal comment IMO.

Moore is a huge question mark. I doubt he's a 250 carry guy.
The line in Min is what really helps them. As runners Bennett and Smith have yet to really do anything special other than get hurt or suspended. They are good though and I certainly wouldn't sign Henry over them.
With that defense you'd almost want to see Williams and Smith get the bulk and slow the games down a bit.

I think they are already paying him (Barlow) a good chunk though.Yes, but there are conflicting reports about what type of deal it is. Some say the bonus money is mostly roster bonuses, meaning the 49ers can walk away from the contract this off-season with a minimal cap hit.

hopefully the 49ers can because that guy stinks. he was eddie george-esque this season.

Talking Minny, you would have to think that Smith or Bennett becomes the main man next year with Moore and Williams assuming specific roles, while Bennett (my guess) or Smith is traded for picks or to address a need elsewhere. So not only is that a team that probably wouldn't want Henry, but a team that is adding another good, capable back to the pool of RB's that are going to be available in the off season. Philly is laughing, as Westbrook has proven to be a full season, full load back, and they're getting Buckhalter back next year.
As for Chicago, Jones did enough before their QB problems to warrant a look next year, so they won't be looking overly hard. It'll be interesting to see what happens with some of the potential free agents (Edge, Alexander), if there are any major retirements (Martin) and you can almost bet that Denver will be shopping Droughns if he wants to get a raise after his performance this year (after he went and got some new representation), ditto for William Green. Going to be a hard year for Henry to find a team that will hand him the starters gig without any sort of competition.

Keep in mind, Anthony Thomas is also on the market now. He's made it quite clear he's not returning to Chicago, and wants a starting role as well. Gonna be a rough market for RB's, methinks.
As for Thomas Jones...like the offense itself, looked at least moderately competant with Grossman.

And don't forget the draft will be chalk full of good RBs (Benson, Brown, Williams..). It's going to be a buyer's market for RBs this offseason.

Indy might need a RB - haven't heard anything for a while, but there was a big rumour earlier in the year that The Edge wanted to go back to Miami...
If he stays with the Colts, even if Henry is a B*ll, he's better than Lamar Gordon...

Henry isn't enough of a threat in the passing game to go to Indy I think.
It would be interesting to see him go to the Eagles and combine with Westbrook for a great Thunder/Lightning one-two punch.

I was actually dead serious about the many headed RB Beast in Minnesota. I said he was comprable to what those teams had, and added this "The deal is, I'm not sure some of those places would be in the market, eventhough especially because he appears to only be comprable to their current solutions."
So yeah without any knowledge of contract situations in Minnesota or the whatnot, I'd say that Travis Henry could adequately replace one or two members of their running back by committee.

Now if there is a RB out there who might have a legitimate claim to being stabbed in the back...

If the Colts don't franchise Edge, I would love for Henry to come to Indy. The Colts offense does rely on a back that can catch the ball, and I am not sure how sure-handed Henry is though.
