Why would you say something so unkind, my darling? You had the elaborate proposal to me on the beach....we were strolling along, you whistled, and a dove landed on your shoulder. He/they was/were ___/both suspended. This led me to check on some IP's. The lurker and Passacaglia accounts share not one, but TWO unique IP's. When I say unique, I mean that they are IP's that have never been used to access this board by any other individual. I only have record of the "lurker" account having posted from four IP's *ever*, and two of them are exact matches for "Passacaglia" IP's. This is *extremely* strong evidence that "Passacaglia's" statement in this thread "I don't know who lurker is" is a lie. I only see two possibilities here:

1. The two accounts are from two different people who know each other. Based on the threads that several of you pointed us to, if that is the case, then the two of them decided to troll the board with this thread.

2. There is one person using both accounts. If this is the case, then both accounts would receive bans for this thread. Period. Paragraph.

Because I cannot prove #2 to my satisfaction, I won't issue a banning. However, based on all of the stuff I've read today from the past (never noticed it at all before, frankly....didn't know or remember that "lurker" was supposed to be a girl and to be romantically linked with "Passacaglia"), at the very *best* this thread is some serious, intentionally-planned trolling.

One month in the box for both accounts.

I figured they were getting married and were playing up the stalker thing for a joke. They got boxed for that?! I guess maybe I should have included a :p with my post about the "uncomfortable" thread.

Seroiusly, I don't get it. I bet half the people on this board lie or mislead the rest of us about themselves everyday. Maybe we should all be put in the box....

BTW, if anyone is looking for that thread, the KX messageboard thread it references won't work - that board went down a couple of months ago and we've been bouncing around on other boards ever since. Kinda sucks, actually. But that's what happens when a band's "official" board is entire paid for and maintained by fans...

Yes, because lurker (if you read her older posts) is believeably a girl. I do think she posted an announcement and then Pass said "wouldn't it be fun if..?" Totally believable.

Either it is one person, or two people who have posted from the same computer, thereby making the very first post that "Passacaglia" made in this thread an out-and-out lie. An out-and-out lie was posted in order to evoke a negative, uncomfortable reaction from people.

Unless they've got a router. We've got four computers in this house, and I'm pretty certain that were I to post from any one of them, you'd see the same outgoing IP address.

Well, having not started reading this thread until about 3:20 or so, and getting the first 109 posts all in one sitting ... dang.

I believe we're looking at serious "strangest thread ever" potential here. Only thing
I can think of offhand to rival it might be the one with all the relationship diagrams & flowcharts.

FTR, I'll admit that I read through this figuring it was just a poorly executed gag. Pending new evidence, I figure that:
Pass & Lurk are a couple, they're really engaged, they kinda suck at executing gags, and that SD has a waaaaaaaaaaay different interpretation of the thread (or the word "trolling") than me. And if I'm wrong about any of that, I believe the most likely place for error is believing that they've really been boxed/banned and/or that SD isn't in on this somehow (even if he's just spoofing them like they tried to spoof us).

personally, when I read it, I thought it was lurker trolling Pass and the rest of us.. that's problematic. Of course, it turned out it was lurker and Pass having fun with us and announcing their engagement in a new and creative way.

May I suggest, SkyDog, as an engagement gift (and a first offense parole), that you reduce the boxing to one week?

But, you have repeatedly given them lying as the reason for their suspension.

The whole pretend stalker thing is tasteless and mildly offensive, but if being tasteless and offensive is suspendable, why does Fritz have an account?

It seems to me this falls far short of previous standards for penalties - no insults, threats, or anything like that. You cannot expect everyone here to adhere to your own moral code, which seems like you have done.

{Slams down gavel.}
To your satisfaction? You get off on wanting to ban people for having a little fun?

FWIW, they are really engaged, they are two different people. Pass isn't trying this hard with 2 different accounts and has kept a joke fantasy of his alias lurker for a year, get out of here.

Suspend em, fine, but for a fricking month? That is the way to get people never to return all because of a little joke. I really like you, but your coming down too hard.

My 2 worthless, almost Canadian-esque cents.

Getting caught in the lie is what makes it *obvious* trolling. The reason for the length is that I still believe that this is possibly one person. We need a definitive meaning of the word "trolling" from Skydog, because I don't think making a silly joke that hurts NO ONE to be trolling, let alone time in the box. Ridiculous.

Ben E Lou
01-05-2005, 04:06 PM
OK. I spent a good bit of time researching the IP's of the lurker account, and asked Pass some questions via IM based on my research. He answered them all quickly, and in a way that gives a plausible explanation for some fishy stuff from the IP's. The IP evidence made it look quite likely that he was posting from work as lurker and home as lurker and Pass. The questions I asked, some direct and others indirect, were answered in a way that makes it plausible to me that they are, indeed, two different people. Pass logs in to FOFC in an unusual manner--and he mentioned it before I even got the chance to ask about it.

So, now that I'm convinced it wasn't one person using two accounts, I'm lowering the suspension to two days.

Go OUT to dinner?? Hah, good one. What is this you speak of? I wish we went out, we are two broke college students, its either fast food or I cook. And I didn't say he didn't want people seeing my picture, I ment he probably wants you guys to think he's dating a hottie, I wouldn't want to dissapoint anyone.

What happen here? I don't want to shift through 4 pages.
Long story short:

- Two people you've never heard of got engaged
- They decide to play a joke on everyone by acting like they don't know each other even though they just told us they got engaged
- SkyDog, still distraught over the hockey lockout, goes on a banning rampage
- Various gnashing of teeth
- It's revealed that many more FOFCers than you think are female
- All the male FOFCers go into cocky and funny mode and spend the night awkwardly trying to flirt with the women
- Much fun ensues
- SunDancer shows up, fun immediately ends

We're back, more powerful than ever! So, for those of you who didn't hop over to the FCFL forum, I'll explain what happened. It's pretty much what everyone suspected -- lurker and I (who are, in fact, two different people -- no, I did not create a pretend girlfriend over three years ago, then proceed to act very mild-mannered about it until one fateful day) got engaged, and thought about how we should announce it to FOFC. The first page and a half or so of this thread is just the beginning of what we had come up with. We had more, so more fun was missed, but it seemed like the thread was running out of steam anyway, because people thought we were actually going for believability (thanks to our Net Detectives for exposing that one right away). I don't think we were going for a negative/uncomfortable feeling, but to those who really felt uncomfortable about it, I'll say "I'm truly sorry" to your face, and mutter "lighten up" behind your back. Thanks to all who stood up for me, although we were really going for a mood of zaniness and merriment in this thread, rather than one that raised upheaval. So a big thanks to those who kept that moment alive by not bothering with all the serious junk going on, and continuing to make wisecracks!

Anyway, thanks to all for the congratulations! Lurker and I are both really excited, and we're looking at Summer 2006 for the wedding. Y'all are invited, as long as you don't mind seeing a guy marry himself, while he's also stalking himself! :)

May I ask how did you two meet?

I think she was looking through the 'what do you look like thread' saw his picture, PM"d him and the rest is history.

That would've been much more interesting than the way we did meet. I might as well tell the story, however boring it is, so that Noop will quit bugging Passacaglia in every thread he posts for the juicy details. Over five years ago, our actuarial math prof assigned us to a study group together. Our love of goofing off and annoying our other study group members brought us together, we became great friends, and then after about a year we just fell in love. It was really natural and great. Of course, I thought he was a total dork when I first met him. And still do :)

Oh yeah, and we were thinking that our second, not our first, child should be named "Dola."

Sorry if I'm not fulfilling my female board member duties by not posting any comments that would get all the guys on the board turned on. Frankly, that would be too easy. There's a reason I posted for over a year before mentioning that I'm female and that was only because I was buying the latest version of the game for my boyfriend and all the homophobes had to make sure that I'm not a guy too. For all the girls that are enjoying turning the board into a chat room, maybe you should read the Onion article entitled "Woman At Farscape Convention Has Dangerously Inflated Self-Image"

Summer of 2006? Not to be a cynical bastard, but isn't that a long freaking engagement? I was engaged for 5 months, and that was just so we could get married the day before my birthday so I'd never forget my anniversary.

Time for more cooky messageboard hijinks before they settle down.

I was engaged that long. Its not uncommon these days for long engagements, especially for formal weddings. Reception halls are often booked solid for the entire upcoming year, necesitating a long engagement if one wants a meticulously planned, traditional wedding and reception.

I will be engaged for a year and a half before I get married this July 3rd. You are right about the reception places, all of the dates we wanted were already booked and we were looking well in advance.

I concur. My cousin had a six month engagement so that they could get married before the Marines shipped him out of the country. The parents wanted a traditional wedding with all of the trimmings and had a very hard time getting all of the stuff they wanted on such "short notice." (which 6 months apparently is in the wedding/reception business).

Plus, I'm Indian and that means it's got to be a freaking huge wedding with my parents inviting everyone they've ever met. Around 500 people.

I wanted to just have a reception at Pizza Hut or something while wearing jeans but my mom flipped out. :)

We were engaged for well over a year as well. Even if you aren't having a "big wedding," it takes time to get everything planned, and I thought our long engagement was a great idea even though we both KNEW we were going to get married.

I think comparing this board to a Farscape Convention is a little harsh. I think you actually get a pretty good cross section of society in here. Except for homos.

For all the girls that are enjoying turning the board into a chat room ...

Y'know, it's funny, but I haven't really noticed any of those around here.

What I have seen lately are a few members who happen to be female playing along with what I've interpreted as good-natured posts that are almost self-parody of the whole "guy/girl chatroom" thing.

Lord knows, I don't actually see every post or even every thread here, so maybe I've missed something that'd fit your description. Or maybe it was an attempt at humor that misfired, or maybe it just didn't come out quite like you meant it, but otherwise ... well, it reads to me like an unwarranted cheap shot at some other members.

I think it was just that several popped up at the same time and the board seemed to turn into a boys highschool lockerroom. All the boys seemed to be trying to out impress the girls :) For a day or two someone probably should have sprayed a water hose on fofc or something.

I'm glad they are around, I like the various points of views on conversations and welcome anyone to join in (except my wife). :)

I know what you're talking about, but I guess this might just be one of those rare cases where I'm the person giving the proverbial benefit of the doubt.

There was certainly no shortage of that "boy's locker room" stuff, I just didn't really believe it was particularly ... sincere, for lack of a better word. Largely "flirting for the sake of flirting" or "being a guy" just because it was the obvious response, not anybody actually expecting for a moment to successfully "make time" with any of the ladies. Or, phrased in FOFCspeak, there was plenty of funny just not much cocky to go with it :D
