John Madden ruined the genre. Used to have guys that could speak English, now have guys with grease pencils going 'boom' all the time.

Run Collinsworth:

IF run THEN talk aggressively about penalty missed by refs

IF pass THEN talk aggressively about wide open receiver missed by QB

REPEAT

Cris Collinsworth is in the same echelon as Brent Musberger, Stephen A. Smith and Bill Walton

I like Cris Collinsworth. I guess I'm not as familiar with him as an announcer, but when I was a kid I would hear him on Cincinnati sports talk radio and I thought he was pretty good.

No one is even close to Brent Musburger. He's by far the worst. And he's been on the national scene stinking up coverage since before Walton and Collinswoth were playing and Smith was in grade school.

I think he sucks. Plain and simple. Oh, and completely. I have hated this guy as a broadcaster from day 1. I like him as a player, but when he takes the booth, opens his mouth, and spews his elitist mouth about how terrible everybody else is, it was just too much.

I actually like him. On Inside The NFL, he was saying he would have not started Moss after his leaving the field early incident. I like him because he actually takes a stand against a lot of the bullshit that goes on in football these days.

Someone has got to tell all those announcers to STOP holding a pencil when they talk...
this is plain silly.
Yesterday it was Troy Aikman, wearing gloves...and holding a pen.

I don't know why and if they use those, but from an outsider's perspective : announcers look awfully stupid talking with pens, each single one of them.

I'm with you. There are many commentators much, much, MUCH worse than Collinsworth.

Is that the Bob Dole method of sportscasting?

I want to agree with you, as it goes along with my general idealogies regarding football. But the cynic in me makes me wonder if he'd make these same stands if his paycheck was determined by on the field perfomance (i.e. He was a coach, or someone in a front office job with an NFL team.) and not on ratings and fan appeal which can be garnered by taking these stances and making some of these non-game related issues bigger and more hyped than they should be.

Its real easy to say you wouldn't play Moss when your job doesn't depend on the game.

Don't mind me.. Just annoyed lately with the trend of sports broadcasters who seem to try and make themselves part of the game/news rather than just tell us what the hell is going on in the game/around the league along with some of their insight.

I discovered yesterday that I really don't like Phil Simms as a commentator. He never bothered me before...maybe I just wasn't listening closely enough. The ESPN gang drives me nuts. I used to think Mike Patrick was pretty good, but I think he's been corrupted...
