View Full Version : A walk back through history for the Pats fans

I just love going back in time and looking at past threads.

Like this one. http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/showthread.php?t=24620&page=1&pp=30

I love Shorty and Eaglesfan's comments (where the Pats "overpaid" for Dillon). Don't you just love the irony.

Or this one.http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/showthread.php?t=30177&page=5&pp=30&highlight=washington

Where some thought the Pats only win with luck and the loss of Ted Washington was going to be the end of it for the Pats.

Ah, life is very good right now. I am thinking we can go 4 out of 5 years of SB wins. Why not? Who's better?

And where is pj when you really need him for some fun banter?

Anyone here remember Steve Grogan? Tony Eason?

If you're a true Pats fan, you'll remember that era with a shudder or two.

Funny, as a kid I seem to remember them always finding a way to lose, no matter how improbable. Now it's the opposite. I'll enjoy the ride, thanks. :)

I always liked Steve Grogan but I liked him despite the team he played for.

With the obvious exception of the threadstarter ( and I'd give him one days worth of gloat but he's used that up and more ) I have found that Pats fans are a pretty cool group. Compare them to Cowboy's fans. Man, talk about insufferable.

I have a bunch of Pats stuff autographed by Grogan. Was my second favorite player of the times behind John Hannah (My football hero.. Hell, why else would anyone actually want to play guard in football at 8 years old? ;) )

I still have fond memories from the 85 season of him scrambling out of the pocket and running for some yardage in his usual... erm.. graceful manner. Gotta love any qb who can even play the game with a neck brace, two leg braces and a backboard.. Let alone try and actually run for yardage. Steve McNair has nothing on our old boy Grogan. ;)

Like yourself, I'm just enjoying the ride. I just wish they'd win by more than 3 points once in a while. Hard to be a Boston area sports fan the past few decades without having ulcers.

The fins had the best qb statistically in football history and couldn't win one superbowl with him. Must suck to be a fan of such mediocrity.

All the fins are good for is dragging out the fossils of the unbeaten season whenever another team happens to be unbeaten late into the season. Way to live on memories fellas.

I read the original post and I wanted to reply. But I didn't want to bump it and hoped it would just die. Unfortunately, it did not.

Yea, life is good for Boston sports right now. Enjoy it because it will not last.

But why the need to gloat? Can't victory be savored without gloating?

Castlerock: Read the topic, folks are saying that idiot fans are everywhere, in every city, but while we have our fair share (probably more then our fair share), most of us have tried to bend over backwards not to gloat, rub it in, etcetera.

I know it won't last.. but I'm enjoying the ride right now.

It seems I was on the right track.

If I'd wanted to hurt you, I would post something like this;

Baby, baby, suck your thumb,
Wash your face in bubble gum.
If you don't know what I mean,
Wash your face in gasoline!

I do expect you to come back with an insult; my only request is that you please make it creative.

Hey, at least I respect the hell out of the Cowboys. It was fun to hate them but guys like Staubach, Too Tall, Aikman, Smith, White, Allen, Pearson etc are all guys I'd love to buy a beer for and thank them for all the fun I've ever had hating their guts. :)

That's what a true sports rivalry is all about IMHO and I've enjoyed hating the Cowboys over the years.

It truly is amzing that every time pj says he's leaving and never coming back, he keeps showing up. This time first thing in the morning right after my post. I predict he will respond to this post within 12 hours, and probably just one.

Why did everyone think I was gloating? The topic was really an invite only to Pats fans. And I was really only pointing out the incorrect observations of Pats haters/nonbelievers to begin with.

P.S. I know it will end, which is exactly why I am living it up now. Ok, I am gloating a little bit.

I'll amuse you by responding to you V, but this time its for real, I already asked for my account to be deleted, it's the only thing I can do to stop you from calling me out and lusting for my attention. And that always leads to me getting pissed off and being a jerk, wich inspires other assholes to comment because they got nothing better to do then post thier idiotic ramblings 3 or more times a day on an internet message board. Like anyone else really gives a shit. Its a vicious cycle that must end.
Now if everyone can do me a favor and not regaurd or reference me from this point forward, because I obviously can't help myself from responding. It should be easy because everyone here is a level above me emotinally and intellectually. Or at least you act that way so prove it. Keep your comments to yourself, let me go my way, I'll let you go yours and we'll all be better for it.

This thread should be retitled sour grapes . I am not a Pats fan and I gotta say there is alot and I mean alot of whining on this board about the Pats. Why did everyone think I was gloating? The topic was really an invite only to Pats fans. And I was really only pointing out the incorrect observations of Pats haters/nonbelievers to begin with.

Hm, and here I was thinking that I liked the Patriots. I've kind of been a fan of their's since Bill Parcells took over in the mid 90's and have followed them since. I didn't realize because I was just making honest observations, that made me a Patriot hater....

And as far as the second thread went, they were not incorrect observations. I remember (and I verified) that I said if the Patriots played that way, they weren't going back to the Super Bowl. If. But, to my happiness, they got to work and fixed what went wrong in that game. Good for them. I'm happy.

But, because I pointed out what was wrong in that first game, that makes me a hater somehow.....

(Nothing more annoying than someone who simply can't handle criticism of the teams they are fans of)

Steve Grogan, greatest QB ever to consistently wear a neck brace. I'm pretty sure he wore it grocery shopping and driving. Does anyone remember the Grogan-Eason QB controversy during the 1985 playoff run? If only Eason had played more, they might have lost 46-17 instead of 46-10.

As much as it pains me to say this, I *still* think Eason could have turned out to be a decent QB if not for the fact we were working without a consitent o-line OR running back during his tenure.

I almost felt bad when his own linemen were making "wearing a skirt" comments about him while he was still a starter.

As a side not, I have a cool autographed photo of grogan with me striking the Mr. Roboto like throwing pose of his backboard days and him slapping me upside the back of the head. :) One of the perks of living in Foxboro and him owning the sporting goods shop up the street.

Now this is a laugher. Here is the private message I got from pj (supposedly before he leaves us for good):

"You just dont get it do you , you stupid ---. I told you to shut the --- up about it, don't speak to me and don't regaurd me but you can't do that because your some sick, twisted ---- who can't help themselves. Hopefully when my account is deleted there will be no means of communication possible between us, and this sick game of yours will finally end. Get a ----- life." [edited to remove offensive language, aka the f-word]

Talk about taking life a little too seriously. Anyone that was feeling sympathy for the guy, take note. My guess however is that he will be back and probably respond to this post as well. When you throw some idiotic opinions on a message board and rant off on a team, don't come crying about it later when people take exception to it. I am going to put him on ignore.

Why he needs the delete, I am not too sure. Why doesn't he just quit visiting the board???

Usually, I wouldn't post a PM, but this was over the line.

I was a huge fan of Grogan back then (was in high school at the time). The key I remember was Eason doing NOTHING in the Super Bowl, and Grogan coming in and leading the Pats to a TD. It was a sad day when my original Grogan jersey finally had to be retired. I keep thinking about picking up a throwback...

The amazing thing is that somebody did a poll of adult Patriots fans in the past year, asking them to list the top 10 players in Pats history.. I wonder if they specifically said RETIRED Pats players, because Brady wasn't even in the top 10..

But John Hannah was #1, and Steve Grogan #2 :)

Ooo, that's a fun game. Let me see:

Tom Brady
Drew Bledsoe
Steve Grogan
Richard Seymour
Ty Law
Mosi Tatupu (hey, I was young, I don't remember ever seeing it spelled)
Irving Fryar
Troy Brown
Ben Coates
Adam Vinatieri

Craig James

In rough order. I'm probably missing some old-timers, but as I said I was a kid in the 70s/80s and just don't remember all that many names.

Jim Plunkett

cthomer is the one who said they overpaid, not me.. when you said that in the beginning of this thread, i was confused because Dillon was my favorite plahyer and I would never think only getting a 2nd rounder for the best RB the Bengals ever had was a steal on Cinci's part..

Just clearing that up.

Julio Riddols
02-08-2005, 01:18 PM
Shorty, how do you feel about Dillons success? I think he deserved it, and I am happy for him.. It just took Cinci too long to really put a serious effort into turning things around.. The next few years look really promising though, and I think Palmer is going to be a top 5 QB as he learns more and more how to pick apart defenses. He was playing like an all pro before he got hurt.

Edit: Madieu Williams is looking like a good enough player to make the Dillon trade worth it, I think. He is going to be a top flight safety. I like Lewis's eye for players, because he seems to get good workers and character guys who seem to truly want to get better.
