I'm looking to improve my defense and i wonder what would be better, knowing that my three defenders now are solid on defending (i run 3-5-2).

1- To buy 3 Excellent defenders without secondaries for around 1 million

2- To buy 1 Formidable defender without secondaries for around 800

3- I have seen some solid defenders with mithycal set pieces, do they worth? i won't improve my defense but i guess i can score a few extra goals that could save my new season in V where every point will count.

Also, how you guys calculate the impact that a new guy could make in your team?

Thanks in advance.

I'll throw out a couple of other options so I guess this convoludes the picture more but that's what I'm here for :)

1) Look for a decent offensive central defender. I've put up my formidable with passable playmaking (and good stamina) for 1.1M and haven't gotten any bites. So you should be able to find one of comprable skill for less than that. I know your midfield is pretty good but it never hurts to have more. That will add another level or two to your midfield as well as improving your defense.

2) Look at a goalie. Nogueria looks like a low excellent. Sell him and use that 1.5M for an outstanding or whatever keeper and that will improve all three across the board. Or get a reasonably young (~23ish) formidable with weak experience who performs about the same and then spend the rest of your cash on a defense upgrade or two.

I usually try to improve a position by two levels at a time. Sometimes I'll even go three. My players stay on the team longer and I notice nice improvements when I do add new guys.

I would lean toward 1 defender, and jump to outstanding if you can. He can play on the weak side of your 3-5-2. It is worth it. I wouldn't go for 3 exc at all. Another thing is find a formidable with secodaries either at mid or wing. Keep in mind though that if you do that your defense doesn't really improve that much, just the other area that his seconday affects.

I think that having a set pieces guy can be lucrative. I do not have one, but it is something I am looking in to.
