Cable TV
by Al Yankovic
Lyrics:
I used to think my life was so empty
I used to think life was passin' me by
Well, I was just about ready
To curl up and die
But then one day I got a visit
From the cable company
Well, they hooked me up and plugged me right in
And now I got cable TV
And now I get to watch the stock report in Korean
Midget wrestling on channel three
It costs me fifty bucks a month just to see 'em
Yeah, but that's all right with me
I got cable TV (Cable TV)
Cable TV (Cable TV)
Oh, eighty-three channels of ecstasy
I love my cable TV, yeah
I love my cable TV
I got the Siamese Faith Healer's Network
The news and weather from Peru
I got celebrity hockey
The Racketball Channel too
Bugs Bunny direct from Atlanta
Mr. Wizard is on at five
I got a satellite dish on the trunk of my car
So I can watch MTV while I drive
I'm talkin' 'bout real quality programs
The kind you just can't get for free
Now I never wanna leave my apartment
'Cause there's just so much for me to see
On my cable TV (Cable TV)
Cable TV(Cable TV)
Well, if you need to find me
You know where I'll be
Watchin' my cable TV, yeah
Watchin' my cable TV
'Cause I love my cable TV, yeah
I love my cable TV
My friends are gettin' kinda worried
They think I'm turning into some kinda freak
Oh, but they're just jealous 'cause I've seen Porky's
Twenty-seven times this week
On my cable TV (Cable TV)
Cable TV (Cable TV)
Yeah, the greatest thing that's ever happened to me
I love my cable TV, yeah
I love my cable TV
Well, I got to have cable TV, yeah
I need my cable TV
Well, I love, I love my cable TV (TV)
Got to have cable TV (TV)
Well, I got to have my cable TV, yeah (TV)
Can't live without my cable TV (TV)
Well, I said, got to have some cable TV (TV)
I've got to have my cable TV
I said cable TV, yeah (TV)
Got to have cable TV

My first show: Dukes of Hazzard.
I bought a bourgeois house in the Hollywood hills
With a truckload of hundred thousand dollar bills
Man came by to hook up my cable TV
We settled in for the night my baby and me
We switched 'round and 'round 'til half-past dawn
There was fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Well now home entertainment was my baby's wish
So I hopped into town for a satellite dish
I tied it to the top of my Japanese car
I came home and I pointed it out into the stars
A message came back from the great beyond
There's fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Well we might'a made some friends with some billionaires
We might'a got all nice and friendly
If we'd made it upstairs
All I got was a note that said "Bye-bye John
Our love is fifty-seven channels and nothin' on"
So I bought a .44 magnum it was solid steel cast
And in the blessed name of Elvis well I just let it blast
'Til my TV lay in pieces there at my feet
And they busted me for disturbin' the almighty peace
Judge said "What you got in your defense son?"
"Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on"
I can see by your eyes friend you're just about gone
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on...
Fifty-seven channels and nothin'

My first show: Dukes of Hazzard.
the wife and I watched the first episode the other night. was a bit surprised at a few things - mostly that the voiceovers while they were in the car were very stupid and also that the show seemed to have a little more "adult" slant. almost like they made this show, then realized it was just 7 year old boys watching it and then dumbed it down as the series went on.
or maybe I think about Dukes of Hazzard too much

I watched an show on CMT the other day about the Dukes and basically what you're saying is true. The first few episodes were a lot more adult, but when they realized that they were a hit with kids they decided on no blood, no sex, and no faux cussing. On of the early shows had to do with a "mobile home madame", something they wouldn't have done later in the series...
Edit: I also learned that the early episodes were filmed in Conyers, something I never knew. Of course, I probably heard that before but never paid attention until I started coming here...

wow, I was right!
the first episode involved an orphanage, and there was a joke about one of the brothers probably having a couple of kids there. tacky in any light, but it hit me there that that joke would not have been on later shows. I even noticed that the air horn was different - in this episode, it was just recorded live...later on, it must have been added on post production, because it was much clearer.
also, I saw where they filmed Dukes. No idea where I was - it was a Cub Scout trip to pan for gold or something. but here we were driving up in these hills and suddenly we drive by a General Lee sitting by the side of the road. And then another one...and another...and another. Don't remember how many versions of the car there were, but it was kind of disheartening to discover that there wasn't just one. Also could see the town off in the distance. Didn't really see anything exciting filmed - just a police car driving down a road or something, but still quite a thrill
