My roommate canceled the cable today and returned our box, but when I turn on my TV that wasn't hooked up to a box I still get cable. Does this mean he didn't really cancel it?

I'm not sure. We still have internet could that have anything to do with it? I don't want to watch this and then end up getting charged. Can they track that I'm watching it?

Did you order porn again?

Seriously, it kind of sounds like he maybe cancelled the digital but you do still have basic. Is the Internet in the cable package? I doubt he cancelled that, im pretty sure it's seperate even if it is thru the same cable company.

Don't you guys up at UVM have your own cable company?

I'm off-campus. Adelphia is my cable provider.

So if I'm probably already paying for this I might as well watch it, right?

If he only cancelled it today then it just make take a little time to get shut off. Like a few hours or so.

They probably haven't shut it off yet. Go ahead and watch, then watch your next bill.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but you don't usualy get a box for basic cable right?
Thats why i'm thinking it was digital that he cancelled since he took a box back.

We had a DVR/Digital box, but we weren't getting any digital channels.

sometimes you need a box for basic cable, sometimes you don't. It depends on the cable company.

Adelphia gives you a box, I think, if you are a new(last year or two) customer. All PPV and Premium services are now on the box and not on analog anymore.

I say watch it. If he cancelled the cable and confirmed it with the cable company it is their responsibility to shut it off.

If you have cable internet, you will get basic cable over the same line. Basically, the line to your house can either be on or off. It is required to be on for the internet to work; therefore, you get basic cable as a bonus. However, the cable company will come out and put a filter on the line that allows the internet signal to pass while blocking the cable signal.

Masked is exactly right. I had "free" basic cable for over a year because of my Internet connection.

One day it just went off, presumably because they put on a filter. They never said anything to me about it and I wasn't billed extra. Maybe you'll just get lucky.

Does your roommate look like this and answers to the name "Chip"?

I had a friend who downgraded her cable from premium to basic. They started billing her at the basic rate, but she kept getting premium service. Every three months or so, they would call her and say something like "It looks like you are still getting premium cable, so we'll just start charging you for that, OK?" And she would say "No, just turn off the premium." And they wouldn't. Rinse. Repeat.

I assumed that--because it does not cost them anything to keep providing the service to her--they had a business plan to just keep it on and hope that she would agree to start paying more again. Maybe they are doing the same thing to you. If they keep charging you for it, call them and explain and don't pay. If they don't charge you, just enjoy.
